Calling All West LA Make-up Artists

August 29, 2008 by Southern Weddings in News | 5 comments

OK, I am reaching out to all of you west coast people…  a dear friend of mine just wrote me and needs your help!

“Do you know anyone that does hair and makeup in west Los Angeles?  I am a bridesmaid in a wedding that got moved up to tomorrow because the
bride’s father is very ill.  It left us very little time to plan anything
and now I’m trying to call around but every salon is booked!”

Do you know anyone that could help?  Thanks in advance and many prayers for the bride and her family on their very special day tomorrow.

Try calling Nirvana Salon, I have a personal friend who works there (Janelle). She did my wedding, if you want to see photos, please email me. There are two great makeup artists there who can also do hair (Janelle and Erin), they also have at least six other people who can do hair. They are based out of Tustin, CA but they travel to LA all the time for weddings and fashion shoots. 714-953-4100

Southern Wedding of the Week: Melissa + Bill

We love this Charlottesville, VA wedding from {Jeff Greenough Photographers} . The ceremony took place at Holy Cross Episcopal Church and inspired the couple’s color scheme of sage, cream, brown and apricot. The bridal party looked stunning in their {Ann Taylor} dresses and {Calvin Klein} tuxes, which complimented the bride’s {San Patrick} gown. Their cake, made by {Albemarle Baking Co}, was topped with marzipan grapes and the reception held at {Veritas Vineyard} to showcase the couple’s love of wine. Check out the lovely flowers, table linens and decor items created by {Beehive Events}.  We especially love the table centerpiece that Shawn from Beehive created with the beautiful apricot roses.  Be sure to check out Jeff’s {BLOG} for more of Melissa + Bill’s lovely day!

The weather was : It was beautiful at 70 degrees and sunny.
What was the design inspiration for your wedding? Rustic Elegance. We were married in a small church in the countryside and the reception was held at an elegant vineyard at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We are wine-lovers!
What colors did you choose for your wedding? Sage, cream, brown and some touches of apricot
Describe your wedding flowers: We had lush peonies and garden roses in cream and apricot, with green foliage, apple blossom branches and some gardenias. This was included in the bride’s bouquet and as groom’s boutonniere.
Describe your wedding cake: A round, four-tier vanilla sponge cake frosted with white chocolate butter cream and filled with Bavarian cream and strawberries. The cake was decorated with green grapes and grape leaves made of marzipan, and a rope-like decoration around each tier also made of marzipan.
How did the two of you meet? At a Halloween party.
Describe your engagement: Bill proposed at home on a Friday night over a bottle of champagne, our Friday night tradition. Although that particular Friday was a much nicer bottle of champagne!
What attracted me to my husband was: Besides the physical attraction, he is an amazing listener and a very caring person
What attracted me to my wife was: She is a fun, spontaneous and loving woman
A date we went on that we’ll always remember: Our first date to a Vietnamese restaurant in Washington, DC
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The groom’s black and white spectator shoes.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The timing – we planned it in two and a half months! And having all out-of-town guests made transportation a big concern – we rented buses for our guests for the wedding day
Where there any special family traditions you included in the wedding? I arrived at the church with my father in a vintage Rolls Royce. We also had cigars at the reception
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day?
Riding from the church to the reception as a newly-married couple (and, other than the driver, alone for the only time the whole evening)!
Scariest moment? When my grandmother got sick the day before and we didn’t think she would be able to attend the ceremony. She did, and even danced with the groom at the reception.
Funniest moment? Laughing during the wonderful, yet humorous homily.
What were your something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue items? – Old: I wore vintage pearl and diamond earrings from the 1940′s. New: my wedding dress. Borrowed: a lace handkerchief that is a family heirloom, borrowed from my mother. Blue – a light blue and white lace garter.
Why do you love your husband? He is my rock when I feel uncertain, scared or apprehensive about anything.

The most unexpected event on our wedding day was:
How absolutely nothing went wrong!!
How was your wedding different than the way you’d always imagined it would be? It wasn’t – it was truly perfect!
Three adjectives that describe the day are: romantic, laughter-filled, seamless.
Did you write your own vows? No – we said traditional Episcopalian vows.
What advice would you give to someone planning their wedding? After planning the entire event myself, I can say that it is important to do your research and keep organized, but the most important is if you have a vision about what you want your wedding day to be like, just go for it!

Congratulations Melissa + Bill!  We wish you a lifetime of happiness.

As I am always miserable attending weddings, this one turned out to be a lot of fun. It was good to be with family and friends for the occasion.
Melissa and Bill are such fine people and I know they will be very happy.

I have attended many weddings, but Melissa and Bill's wedding was about the most impressive. The event was sacred, full of family love, and fun for the wedding party, family and friends. My favorite impressions are: entering the flower bedecked doorway to the beautiful old Holy Cross Episcopal Church, the sacred and warm feeling of the service and communion served by the groom's father. The celebration festivities were impeccably planned, from flowers and food to atmosphere. At the center, Melissa and Bill radiated such happiness and love.

Everything was perfect----no detail was left to chance. As an out of town guest, we were included in all of the festivities beginning with the rehersal dinner and ending with a lovely brunch the Sunday after the wedding. We had a wonderful time. the bride was so beatuiful and teh groom so very handsome. What a wonderful couple.

This is my brother's wedding ... the day (the whole weekend) was absolutely perfect. Melissa and Bill accounted for every detail; the day went off without a hitch. It was, by far, the most beautiful wedding I have ever attended. The day was filled with so much love both between Bill and Melissa and between Bill and Melissa and the guests. And ... how cute are the darling flower girls?!?!

My husband and I were also guests for this destination wedding. We have known the bride, and her beautiful family, for over 20 years. The wedding was not only beautiful, but, simple and elegant at the same time, from the church all the way to the end of the reception. I always believe that "less is more" and this came through with all the memorable details. We wish you a lifetime of health, happiness and success.

The weekend, the day, the wedding---it was fabulous! We were out-of-town guests and everything was so organized for us. We even had a welcome packet in our room with maps, munchies, and info for the weekend. Nice personal touch! From the lovely country church to the beautifully decorated reception hall at the vineyard, the wedding day was perfect.

Southern Wedding of the Week: Jessica + Jason, Part II

Thank you so much for sharing these amazing images with us, Jeff!  Check out more on Jeff Greenough’s {BLOG}.

What was the design inspiration for your wedding?  The linens – everything started with the green striped linen we had on the cocktail tables.  We wanted lots of texture and a clean, beautiful look.

Describe your wedding flowers:  We wanted a mixture of pink, green, orange, and champagne colored, lush lilies and roses. We also included beautiful green orchids.  The cocktail tables hadorchid arrangements with bamboo around the outside of the container – everyone loved them!
Describe your wedding cake:  It was a delicious, chocolate almond marble, with two tone icing and fresh flowers.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding?  I didn’t feel like I had to overcome anything because our wedding planners made sure everything ran smoothly.  Weddings By Michelle was able to take any task that seemed monumental to us and make it so simple.  From the custom made draperies for the deck, to the lighting, to even building a sea glass display with our favors! They were a part of everything.
Scariest moment?  Almost missing our flight the next morning to Little Cayman Islands!  I was a little worried when the cab picked us up at 6:15 am and our flight left at 7:00 am.  Fortunately, we were able to get to our final destination.
Funniest moment?  When my friend Brandon started break dancing and doing the worm.
The most unexpected event on our wedding day was:  During the reception, we lost power for a minute. That’s downside to being at a house, I guess! However, it was back up and running by the time everyone had filled their glasses.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Romantic, Magical, Exquisite

What advice would you give to someone planning their wedding?  If I could suggest anything to a couple getting married, it would be to find a wedding planner you connect with and who will be able to interpret your vision for your wedding day.
What’s next for you as a couple? We are looking forward to building a family in the future. For right now though, we are just enjoying each other.  Jason is looking forward to growing his business and I’m excited about helping him.  We know what we would like out of life and for our future, but we are in no rush.  It’s nice just enjoying today and everything we already share.

Congratulations to Jessica + Jason!  Check back shortly for Part II of our double header…

From Michelle: “Upon our first meeting with the Abbitt family, we quickly realized that they wanted an exquisite wedding but with a very intimate atmosphere.  Jessica and Jason’s vision was to have their wedding in her parent’s backyard, and because it is located directly off the James River, a romantic ambiance would be easy to achieve.  With such a beautiful natural surrounding, we focused on lush linens to complete the look.  Every detail was carefully thought out – from the fan programs which came in handy on a hot June day, the fifteen foot market umbrellas to provide shade, to the bamboo chairs that went perfectly with our outdoor setting.  There were so many special moments throughout the day that it is hard to narrow down just one.  However, I have to say it was a lasting memory for me to see the guests’ faces when they saw the backyard transformed after the ceremony.  Since both the ceremony and reception were held at the same location, it was important to us that we made the best use of the space.  During the ceremony, all of the decor for the reception was hidden behind muslin curtains that we designed and custom made for the deck. After the ceremony, guests enjoyed cocktails under a tent in the front yard.  When it was time for the reception to begin, all of the curtains were pulled back to show the beautiful tablescapes and special lighting.  Everyone raved about the transformation!”

How did the two of you meet?  Jason and I first met through my brother, Travis Abbitt.  Travis and Jason were close friends, so Jason spent many weekends with our family.  In the beginning, he seemed much older than me, so we started out as friends. Once I was older, we began to see each other in a different light.  We both realized how perfect we were for each other and what a wonderful life we could have together.
Describe the proposal:
Jason proposed to me on the 18th of March, which was a Sunday morning.  He woke me up with breakfast in bed and a flower he had picked out of the yard.  I could tell just by the look in his eyes that he had something to tell me.  He leaned down, kissed me, told me how much he loved me and asked me to share my life with him.  Then he pulled out the most beautiful ring I have ever laid eyes on and placed in on my finger.  We were both overwhelmed with emotion.  It was a wonderful way to wake up and we were able to enjoy that feeling all day long.
What attracted me to my husband was:
I was immediately drawn to Jason for many reasons.  His manners, grace, lifestyle and of course his good looks!  I love the way he always carries and presents himself to people in a positive light.  He is kind, respectful and sure assured.  Jason has always remained true to himself,I will always love that about him.

Why do you love your husband?  I love that he always pushes me, makes me try new things, laughs at and with me, and is always supportive.  Jason makes me want to be a better person, friend and lover.  The fact that he’s a cute fisherman, surfer and businessman doesn’t hurt either!
What attracted me to my wife was:  Jess was always a beautiful girl that was down to earth.  Being around her I always felt so comfortable.  I had never met another girl that I clicked with so well.  She would always show me so much attention and I loved it! To me, Jess was like that one piece of the puzzle that I needed to carry me into the future.
A date we went on that we’ll always remember:  We spent many days that lead into the evenings on our boat, in the James River.  We would go slowly through the creeks and have long conversations about anything and everything.  Usually, we’d end up at some little dive of a restaurant on the water, where we would eat seafood over a glass of beer.  We fell in love somewhere back in those creeks, on those lazy days.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress:  I was one of those brides who wasn’t going to buy the first dress I tried on.  One Saturday, my Mom, Maid of Honor and I decided to go look at a boutique in Virginia Beach called Pure English.  Helen, the owner, helped in choosing the dresses I would try on and she knew exactly what would look best on my body type.  The first dress I tried on was beautiful.  Being so petite, I was afraid of a wedding dress overwhelming me, but it felt as though that dress was made for me.  I tried on a few more dresses but always came back to the first one – which I purchased.
The weather on our wedding day was:  Seasonably warm, but with blue skies and puffy white clouds!
Favorite design element of your big day:  Our altar was my favorite design element.  When Michelle, my wedding planner, showed me a picture with the idea, I fell in love with it instantly.  My father and Jason built it from bamboo cut out of our yard.  It was draped with natural colored muslin, and adorned with strings of white and pink flowers.  My father even saved the muslin material that we were married under, so that one day our children could marry under it too.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The fact that we were able to get married in my parent’s backyard was my favorite detail! We were overlooking the James River. It is such a breathtaking view!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The kiss.  I felt like there was no one present except for us.  It was like time stopped and we lost ourselves in the moment.
Were there any special family traditions you included in the wedding? I wore gardenia in my hair, in loving memory of my mema, Elizabeth Taylor Singletary.  Jason proposed to me on her birthday, the 18th of March.  It was like a gift from her to my family and I.

Check back shortly for Part II of Jessica + Jason~

What a gorgeous wedding. The imagery and overall presentation of the environment paired with the simply elegance and refinement are a wonderful and refreshing juxtaposition and contrast with what you typically see in most weddings. Overall an absolutely tranquil and gorgeous setting that any couple could ask for!

This is one of the most beautiful websites I've seen! I hope it will be featured in a magazine issue too so that I can cut it out and save it for my own wedding :)
