Put some fun colorful shoes with the dress and this will make the perfect outfit for some pictures!

Clara G., February 16, 2011 4:10 pm   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply This was tough! I found four that I love. Bonheur, New Caledonia, Oh la la, and B17 bombshell! My speicail occasion is a college graduation / engagement party for my fiance and I. We both graduate from the University of Alabama, so I think my perfect dress needs to have a little crimson/red in it! If I had to choose, I would pick the Oh La La dress. Its a little Alabama-ish and fun for a shrimp boil family get together. This dress would make me so confident when many of my family member's meet my fiance's family for the first time!! I hop I win!!! :)

Sarah Gilreath, February 16, 2011 7:43 pm   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply My darling sister is getting married in June...and as the matron of honor, I will be wearing a different dress than the other bridesmaids. I need something modest, but also really stylish to go with the theme of her wedding. I have loved Shabby Apple for years and would buy every single one if I could. My VERY favorites though are: Bethesda Fountain or Carnival (for her wedding, since navy is one of her colors) or L'Artiste, which would be perfect for the outdoor rehearsal dinner...PLEASE pick me!!! : )

28

Erin, February 16, 2011 7:46 pm   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply You were NOT kidding about it being hard to choose a favorite from Shabby Apple! Mad Men is one of my fiance's and my favorite shows and this was basically the show's fashion, but actually available for purchase! Can you say dream come true? I think one of my favorites is Skymaster--it's so gorgeous and looks completely Old Hollywood Glamorous, but is still practical to be worn today. I can see myself at the ariport welcoming home my will-then-be husband when he returns from Afghanistan this coming December!

avatar

Alisha, February 17, 2011 11:01 am   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply I am a wedding photographer pre-styling my own upcoming anniversary shoot for May. I have a a fellow photographer in mind for the shoot, and let's just say, they are "simply" fabulous! My figure is a few decades late ... my unapologetic hour glass shape comes to life in vintage designs. The shirtwaist dress is my best friend! Needless to say, I am grateful to have discovered Shabby Apple! I truly love many of your designs, but my heart flutters when I look at the "Carnival" and "Marseille." I know these gorgeous blues will pop out of the frame all while accentuating my eyes ... just perfect! I'd love to have one of these designs as the anchor for my shoot!

I've been actually considering the Snow Melt dress for my elopement, as I'm petite and want a dress I can wear after the ceremony. That and a cute pair of Fleuvog shoes would make me a very, very happy bride indeed. My fingers are crossed, as I'm in grad school and every bit helps.

I am especially anxious about the shower my Future Mother-in-Law is throwing the first weekend in March! Eek! I'm absolutely smitten with Fifth Ave, though, and think it would be perfect for the occasion! It's stylish, urban, classy, chic, and all things I want to radiate being in the presence of my new fam! Katy, February 17, 2011 6:57 pm   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply So many to choose from! I love that several dresses are named after songs from one of my favorite musicals - South Pacific! My absolute favorite is "Jacob's Pillow." I think pearl earrings and a pair of red heels would make this a super day-to-night look, but it could work great for a period engagement shoot, too (channelling Kate Beckinsale in Pearl Harbor)!

Allie S, February 17, 2011 9:09 pm   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply You want me to pick just ONE!?!?! I LOVE Shabby Apple. One of the things I love best about their website is that you can shop by body type! It makes shopping so fun and easy. If I have to pick just one dress, though it would be Carousel. With so many bright colors and a fun pattern, you can pair a fabulously colored pair of shoes with this dress and just have fun with it. I'd definitely wear this to a Sunday afternoon bridal shower or pair it with a cardigan and some pumps and wear it to work!

Lynsey, February 17, 2011 9:20 pm   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply Although, I'm quite to the engaged stage of life yet, I am a devout SW follower :) I loved your recommendation of Shabby Apple, as I'm always looking for new dresses that are not on every other young woman I see. My favorite dress right now is the Cider. Like I said, I have no engagement party or bridal shower in the near future, but I do have the perfect place to wear it! I'm an 8th grade English teacher. Since I teach at an underprivileged school, my children haven't been exposed much to classy or professional style. I try to dress in a way each day that promotes self confidence and respect. I can totally picture my girls loving this dress paired with some neutral heels ... or as my 14-year-old girls say my "teacher flats."

Real Virginia Wedding: Michelle + King, Part II

Michelle + King’s Southern celebration continued with a tented reception at the historic Clifton Inn. Barbara Lundgren of Barb Wired, LLC offered day-of coordination, and the talented team at the Inn designed an elegant three-tiered cake with fun purple flourishes. And what do y’all think of the sweet lavender bunting strung up inside the tent? We love! M + K ended the night in crowns fit for a bride and her King! For more, take a peek at Adam Barnes’ post from the day here.

Real Virginia Wedding: Michelle + King, Part I

Virginia weddings always make me a little giddy, and Michelle + King’s Charlottesville celebration is everything I could hope for: an authentic 100-acre plantation (once owned by Thomas Jefferson’s son-in-law!), a Southern-sized troupe of attendants and some of the most darling flower girls I’ve ever seen. The classic black & white photos from Adam Barnes Photography isn’t too shabby, either! The bride wowed in a feminine Modern Trousseau lace dress and vintage veil, and the eleven-strong bridesmaids were lovely in lavender gowns from Priscilla of Boston. As a lover of all rose bouquets, it’s no surprise I love the delicate blooms from Pat’s Floral Design.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. My roommate and good friend was dating (and eventually married) a good friend of King’s from college. When their friends, Caroline and Trey, got engaged, King took a chance and invited Michelle to go to their engagement party. Michelle was home for her brother’s wedding and could not attend the party, so King set up a date for the following week.
Describe the proposal. (From the groom) I knew that Michelle would like to celebrate with her family, so I waited until we visited her family in Naples, Florida in January. We set up a picnic out on the beach and, as the sun went down, I asked her to go for a walk. We got about 5 minutes away from everyone and I asked her. We then celebrated with her family at her favorite restaurant, Bleu Provence.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Intimate, romantic, and fun!
Our favorite details of the wedding were: Our favorite details included our purple dance floor, lollypop escort cards in the shape of the initials K and M, and late night root beer floats. Also, King’s good friend and usher, Brad Bays, played “Brand New Day” by Van Morrison at the ceremony.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? The wedding was in Virginia on a 100-acre property once owned by Thomas Jefferson’s son-in-law.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I knew I wanted something that would reflect my Hispanic heritage and to me that meant lace and capped sleeves. I loved how the dress was romantic and so comfortable and easy to dance in.

New Features :: Ask the Experts + Southern Brides

February 15, 2011 by Emily in InTheOffice,Main,News | 12 comments

Spring is just around the corner, which means it’s time for everything new and sparkling! In that spirit, we’re excited to announce two new features for the SW blog.

The first is less of a new feature and more of a formalizing of something we’ve already been doing. Remember that cowboy boot post, and that navy bridesmaid dress post? Well, under the new system, both would be folded under a single column: Ask the Experts! We, the SW gals, will be your experts, and you, our readers, will do the asking! Got a question about your wedding or anything related to it? We probably have the answer. Y’all already know us pretty well, but we thought we’d do a little rundown of our respective areas of expertise just as a reminder:

Got a question? You can either send it to any one of us, or send a question to howdy at iloveswmag dot com and we’ll forward it on to the right answer-er. We eagerly await your questions! This type of post has been super fun and chatty in the past, so we’re looking forward to kicking this column off with a bang!

The next new feature? Well, it’s not entirely new, either. Some of you reallllly longtime readers might remember the Southern Bride Bloggers: engaged ladies who committed to posting about their weddings and wedding planning for a few months on the SW site. Ultimately, that structure didn’t work so well for us, but we ARE still interested in celebrating real ladies getting married in the South. So, like our friend Katie at Marriage Confessions, we’re going to start having a “Southern Bride of the Month.” You don’t have to be a blogger, you just have to be willing to answer our nosy questions about your wedding and wedding planning process — what you love best, what’s been the worst, what you’re looking forward to the most, what dress you’ve chosen to wear, what you wish you had known when you started, etc. You should also be engaged, and planning a wedding in the South.

If this sounds like something you might be interested in, shoot an email to Emily (emily at iloveswmag dot com) with the following information:

Couples’ names
Wedding date
Wedding location
Blog and/or Twitter addresses, if applicable
Any vendors you’ve booked
Brief description of why we should consider you for our Southern Bride of the Month

Please also attach a photo of you and your honey so we can see your smiling faces! (Don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be pro quality!)

We can’t wait to get these two new features off the ground, so start sending those emails!

Three photos by Jasmine Star. See more from this perfectly classy wedding on her blog here! Photos in the “Ask the Expert” graphic by Millie Holloman.

Southern Etiquette: What to Wear When?

Lori’s question from last week (about what to wear with bridesmaid dresses) started Katharine’s and my wheels turning about all of the different options out there for wedding day attire.

In this day and age (which makes me sound like a grandmother, but oh well!), there are SO many options, from super formal to just-rolled-out-of-bed casual.

With all these options, we thought it might be nice to do a brief overview of the many possibilities. (Okay, we won’t be covering just-rolled-out-of-bed. But you know what I mean!) You can use our guide to heed sartorial etiquette, or to gain general awareness of which rules you’re breaking :) Let’s begin!

The most formal option for daytime wear (anytime before 6pm) is a black or Oxford gray cutaway coat, black or gray striped trousers, a pearl gray waistcoat, stiff white shirt, stiff fold-down collar with gray-and-black striped four-in-hand tie or wing collar with ascot, gray gloves, black silk socks, and black kid shoes. Whew! This is NOT a common look for weddings today, but we did manage to turn up a few examples:

Image credit: Jen Huang. See more from this wedding here!

The most formal option for traditional evening attire consists of a black tailcoat and trousers, a white pique waistcoat, a starched-front shirt with a wing collar, a white bow tie, white gloves, black silk socks, black patent-leather shoes or pumps or black kid smooth-toed shoes. Tuxedos are also acceptable. Not as elusive as the formal daytime option, and more popular in the South than other regions of the country, but still fairly rare.

For a semiformal daytime wedding, the groom might wear a suit-style dark gray or black sack (straight-backed) coat, matching trousers, a soft or white pleated shirt, a four-in-hand tie, and black smooth-toed shoes. For all of you non-menswear experts, that’s basically your standard “nice suit.” A dove gray waistcoat was the traditional pairing with this look, but grooms are switching things up left and right these days. A very popular option!

For a semiformal evening wedding, the attire options are split by seasons. For a winter wedding, a black or midnight blue tuxedo is most appropriate. Here, Katharine’s groom Kyle models the look with aplomb:

In the summer, a white dinner jacket and black cummerbund can be substituted.

Either can be paired with a pleated or pique soft shirt with attached collar, a black cummerbund and black bow tie, and a pair of black patent-leather or kid shoes. No gloves.

For informal day or evening weddings, it really starts to get loose. Lighter-weight suits or jackets and trousers, white suits, seersucker suits, khaki suits, khakis and navy blazers, trousers and suspenders… the sartorial options are almost limitless. Just remember to keep whatever you do choose in good taste and in keeping with the ceremony and reception location and time of year.

So, ladies: what will your men be wearing on the big day? Leave us a note in the comments!

Lastly, let’s have a big round of applause for Mr. Bryan Johnson! I turned to A Bryan Photo for the lion’s share of these images. If you’re ever looking for wedding inspiration (and great photography, of course), look no further than their galleries!

Elizabeth, February 15, 2011 10:19 am   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply I went to a 6:00 wedding once in the fall and the groomsmen wore black, but their shirts were off-white. It looked really handsome! I was thinking of doing the same for our fall wedding because my dress is more of an off-white too. It seems like an ok move, but I've only seen it that one time. Is that strange?

avatar
avatar

Katharine, February 15, 2011 11:28 am   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply Hi Elizabeth! If your dress is more ivory than true white, an off-white shirt for your groom could be a really nice complement, especially if you already love the look! Warmer tones are also a nice touch for a fall wedding. Just make sure the groomsmen also wear off-white shirts and that there aren't too many other white-white details in the ceremony or reception. (Your pictures could look a little funny if there are different shades of white floating around.) Congratulations and happy planning!

Natalie, February 15, 2011 10:40 am   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply My fiancee and I are getting married in a barn but we are still traditionalists and he wants to wear a tuxedo with the standard black tie. He chose his look and said he likes the classic look. Thank goodness I got a man who knows how to dress appropriately, ha. But I believe there is a lot of play with your attire on your big day because lets be honest it is YOUR day. You make the rules!

avatar
avatar

Katharine, February 15, 2011 11:31 am   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply Amen, Natalie! Tradition and formal etiquette are nice guidelines, especially if you're undecided and looking for suggestions as you plan, but in the end the only rules you follow should be your own.

4

Erin, February 15, 2011 10:53 am   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply My fiance said he definitely wants to wear a tuxedo to our 5:30/6 (still undecided!) wedding in September 2012. Originally he was interested in a white tux jacket, but I said he'd look like a waiter...but now I'm changing my mind as it does look extremely handsome. My only concern is that our wedding is September 22, the first day of fall that year (but usually it's still hot around that time in Northern Virginia)--does this mean a white tux jacket is out since it's technically fall??

avatar
avatar

Emily, February 15, 2011 11:19 am   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply Hi, Erin! As Natalie said, it's your wedding, so you make the rules! BUT, if you're looking for etiquette guidance, I just checked Emily Post and she says tuxedos for winter and white jackets for summer. However, she doesn't specify either for fall or spring. I'd take that to mean that you can use your discretion in choosing, which means that if you like the look of the white jacket, go for that! I can pretty much guarantee that your guests will NOT be horrified by the possible faux pas :)

Erin, February 15, 2011 2:16 pm   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply Emily: Thanks so much for the response! It's tough to find etiquette rules for seemingly ambiguous days/seasons/dates!

We're getting married on a deck in the woods with a picnic reception, so I think it'll tie in perfectly with our wedding atmosphere.

Lindsey Richards, February 16, 2011 10:14 pm   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply Thanks so much for this post! My fiance and I are still deciding whether to go with the classic black tux or khakis with navy blazers. We're having a traditional church wedding, but our reception is at a horse stable in VA. I feel like the navy blazer is more "him", but at the same time this is the one day where he feels like he should definitely go all out in a formal tux. Our colors are navy, persimmon, and pewter, so navy blazers would look great in the big scheme of things. Too many options! What do you think?

Emily, February 17, 2011 10:12 am   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply Hi Lindsey! Katharine and I agree that the khaki and blazer combo sounds like the winner given your reception location and color palette. However, he's the groom, so if he's always wanted to wear a tux, he should go for it! And remember: as the groom in a tux, he'll never stick out in a bad way.

Jennifer, February 21, 2011 10:57 am   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply We are getting married outside in May at the home of the groom's parents which sits on a small lake in Perry, Georgia. We want to have the guys wear gray seersucker, but our problem is we can't figure out the right shoes. White bucks would be traditional, but they are pricey and not everyone owns a pair.

erin, March 3, 2011 10:06 pm   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply Hi, thanks for the post on men's wedding attire! Our wedding is coming up very soon... it's in the beginning of April, eeks!! It will be just outside of Chapel Hill , NC, with an outside ceremony (weather permitting) and barn reception. The groomsmen are all wearing charcoal gray suits. My fiance bought monogrammed light blue shirts as a gift for each of the groomsmen and we also picked them each out a different patterned tie in the same shade of green. My fiance will be wearing a charcoal gray suit with chalk stripes, a white shirt and another different green tie. I do have a question for y'all though... My dad is wearing a navy suit but he would really like to wear a bow tie. I think it's a great idea and offered to find it for him... but now I can't find one! Anyone have any ideas about where to find nice bow ties, preferably online? I am looking for a patterned bow tie in a moss green shade. Thank you!!

Emily, March 4, 2011 9:27 am   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply Hi Erin! Of course I have a few suggestions! :) For patterned bowties, I love Forage (http://www.forage.bigcartel.com/). The Tie Bar (www.thetiebar.com) has lots of nice simple patterns in a nice price range. Southern Proper or Vineyard Vines are great for a preppy look. And lastly, Pierrepont Hicks has some AMAZING styles right now -- LOVE! (http://www.pierreponthicks-shop.com/category/bows). I hope that helps!!

Kyla, June 4, 2011 11:01 pm   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply I am curious about a patchwork madras sports coat. I am from SC and it can be incredibly hot sometimes into October. My fiance asked if he could wear his favorite patchwork madras sports coat to our wedding. I think it looks quite nice on him and would work with a navy and yellow theme but I was planning on an October wedding. I hate being restrictive about what choices he has to make in the wedding but also don't wanna change everything because his outfit of choice isn't seasonally appropriate. I can't really find any material online stating that at some point madras is not allowed but I have always thought of it like seersucker and wouldn't think you could wear it after Labor Day. Any thoughts? Our wedding is going to be outside so summer would be unbearable! :) Thanks!

Emily, June 7, 2011 10:49 am   Yeehaw! Love this: Thumb up 0 reply Hi Kyla! If there is a rule about madras (which I'm not entirely sure there is...), you're right, it's probably a "faux pas" to wear it after Labor Day. But I think the sportscoat option sounds lovely, and if it's what your fiance wants to wear and you're okay with it, then go for it! It's so much hotter in the South than other parts of the country, anyway, that it almost seems like the Labor Day rule should become the Columbus Day rule :) Congratulations and happy planning!
