Southern Weddings Color Palette Finds: Soft Peach and Blue

Picking out color palette finds to match Emily’s soft peach and blue inspiration board was pressure-packed! With a peachy-keen eye and a dedication to doing our beloved Southern fruit justice, I looked high and low for finds that were both colorful and lovely. In the process, I built up a hankerin’ for peach cobbler and an affinity for powdery blue things. I can’t say I hate it.

A. Pearls are a Southern girl’s best friend. Embellish your outfit with this multi-strand pearl necklace that will “wow” without overpowering.

B. With a hint of an era passed, bow details and soft colors, this frock won my heart. From BHLDN here.

C. Create a little ambiance with round paper lanterns from Luna Bazaar. We like to buy dozens to light up a room!

D. A pair of heels can always brighten up your day. And a pair of heels that match our color palette? That’s just swell! I love this pair from Nina.

E. Light up this prettily-packaged kitchen candle as you and your sweetie prep dinner. It’ll bring back memories of your first date.

F. Snuggle up with your sweetie and this cozy blue pillow from Pottery Barn. We love the embroidered chain stitch.

G. Share the peach love with these adorable note cards from Gilah Press. We haven’t gotten them off our minds since the National Stationery Show where Emily first spotted them.

H. There’s no reason why peaches can’t be dessert (and maybe breakfast, lunch and dinner). Grab your sweetie and fire up the grill for this delicious grilled vanilla peaches recipe.

I. The best peaches practically melt in your mouth—that’s how we know gourmet peach marshmallows are a good idea.

J. Pay homage to the peach state with this bright print. It’ll make you happy that you took the time to make some peach preserves to last through the winter.

K. Pale blue doilies dressing up our go-to tea towels? We love it! These delicate-looking linens will instantly put a smile on your face.

Desert Wedding by Sarah Rhoads, Part II

Sarah + Steve’s reception at Desert Mountain has officially won my heart. The newlyweds chose to play up the natural Arizona vibe with shades of burnt orange, rustic florals and warm lighting. The desert theme was brought over the the couple’s wedding cake, which was topped with succulent plants and embellished with their initials. The two chose to keep the cake small, like their wedding, so that they could include fun mini desserts (Emily approves). We even spotted some mini creme brulee tarts (I definitely approve)! Guests celebrated into the night and were treated to a farewell brunch before heading home. Thank you again to Sarah Rhoads Photographers for sharing this desert beauty with us!

See all the photos from Sarah + Steve’s wedding in their Real Wedding Gallery!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? The night before the wedding, after rehearsal dinner, we had a big party at the Buffalo Chip Saloon, which is an authentic Western saloon in Cave Creek, Arizona with live music, dancing and live bull riding!
Describe your wedding flowers: The flowers were very natural. They were a mix of succulents and florals in shades of burnt orange, eggplant and greens, with pops of yellow. My mom helped a lot with the flowers since she lives in Arizona and I absolutely loved how they turned out. They went with the rustic Arizona vibe of the wedding perfectly.
Describe your wedding cake: We had a three-tiered square cake with chocolate buttercream frosting, decorated by the florist with succulents to match the rest of the floral arrangements. We had a smaller wedding cake so that we could do lots of other fun “mini” desserts as well.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Keeping it small. It was important to me to keep the wedding small and intimate, which proved to be a lot harder than you would imagine!
What range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000 – $50,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? The invitations. I absolutely loved how they turned out and felt like they set the stage for our wedding weekend celebration.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? My grandfather’s impromptu speech during the reception (after winning the “anniversary dance” with my grandmother) on the secrets to a lasting marriage.

Desert Wedding by Sarah Rhoads, Part I

Sarah + Steve’s Arizona wedding made the desert look tre chic. Dressed in form-fitting Vera Wang gown, bejeweled BHLDN sandals and carrying an exotic bouquet of succulents and flowers, Sarah was ready to say her vows to Steve. Their ceremony was subtly detailed with hanging flower vases, orange, yellow, and red petals, and a vine-covered arch. It was a beautiful highlight to the weekend-long affair, which also included a golf tourney for the gentlemen, a pool day for the ladies, and a trip to the Buffalo Chip Saloon! Kudos to Sarah Rhoads Photographers who photographed the day!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Steve and I met 7 years ago at the University of Washington, when I lived in his fraternity for the summer. We became best friends. Steve says he always knew we would be together, but it took me a few more years to figure it out. Luckily, Steve stuck around and I finally realized that our relationship was much more than a friendship. Having been best friends for so many years made dating easy and over the last few years, everything fell into place. Now, I am so happy to be married to my best friend!
Describe the proposal. Having just spent 5 weeks abroad with my family, Steve told me he wanted to take me away for a special birthday trip. We packed the car up and drove out to Suncadia (a resort in Eastern Washington) for the weekend. We spent the afternoon biking, hanging out by the river and relaxing at the pool. We did wine and birthday presents in our room that evening and the last present was my ring. Somehow he totally surprised me! We went out to dinner that night to celebrate my 26th birthday and our engagement and had amazing time!!
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Relaxed, memorable, intimate
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: That it was a whole weekend affair for everyone. We started the weekend with a golf tourney for the boys, a pool day for the girls, followed by rehearsal dinner and a night out at the Buffalo Chip Saloon. The ceremony and reception was on Saturday and we had a farewell brunch at my parents’ house Sunday, before everyone flew home. It was great to be able to spend the entire weekend with our closest friends and family. The entire weekend was perfect and we wouldn’t change a thing!

Southern Style: Marrying The Notebook

August 30, 2011 by Marissa in Fashion and Style,Main | 23 comments

Let me start by saying that I spent last Saturday night in watching this movie and bawling my face off! There is just something so incredibly romantic about Allie and Noah’s love story that just causes me to immediately reach for my hankie!

In my humble opinion, The Notebook is one of the best Southern romance movies of our generation (yep, I just went there!). Style-wise, well don’t even get me started. Allie is sophisticated, yet fun and her accessories are so perfectly classic Southern I would die to raid this prop closet! And Noah… that driving cap, the shaggy mop, the sweet Southern drawl … need I say more?

All images by New Line Cinema c/o IMDB.

Since there wasn’t actually a wedding shown in The Notebook, we’ve decided to pull a few of our favorite key elements to discuss. First up, the blusher veil. If you remember that fateful scene where Allie is trying on the gorgeous wedding dress she plans to wear to marry dear, sweet Lon you’ll notice her great long cathedral length veil and blusher. We’re sure that she wore a similar classic style to her wedding to Noah!

Image credit from top to bottom: Elizabeth Messina via Snippet & Ink, Sean Flanigan, Erin Hearts Court via Snippet & Ink and Stephen Seebeck.

In the movie, Noah was very rarely seen without his driving cap. These caps, also known as the flat cap, were originally made of wool or tweed and worn for warmth, but in the 1920′s this hat became a fashionable “street” look for working class young men. I think this adorable little guy below looks more sweet than street in his cap and bow tie combo!

Image credit from top to bottom and left to right: Blushing Bride Studio, Jose Villa and Kristin Vining .

I’m a huge fan of our next item – I think that classic white gloves never go out of style! I think you’d agree with me that Allie would have worn lovely pair to her wedding to Noah. These stylish brides below are proof that white gloves aren’t just for Deb Balls anymore.

Image credit from top to bottom: Angi Welsch, Michele M. Waite, Dixie Pixel and Heather Waraksa via Ruffled.

Last, but most certainly not least we have the rowboat scene! Who could forget this scene? Romantic, relaxing and just plain gorgeous. Feast your eyes on these beauties below, then grab your beau and make plans to enjoy this sweet past time under some giant gorgeous oak trees and sunshine (or rain)!

What’s your favorite Southern movie? Leave a comment or send me an email on which Southern movie you’d like us to do next.

Allie, August 30, 2011 4:35 pm   reply Oh wow, I almost squealed when I clicked on the "SWM" favorites icon on on my browser (at work no less!) and this post popped up. This is by far one of my favorite movies of all time and I so wish we could see how they styled Allie as a bride. I imagine her dress would be very Grace Kelly though. Marissa, you totally nailed it with the veil with the blusher and the white gloves. So classy :)

Shannon, August 31, 2011 3:51 am   reply Oh my goodness. This makes me want to have our e-pics done in a canoe in Biloxi Bay. I'm just imagining the moss-covered oaks as a backdrop. *sigh* On a side note: My fiance is a restaurant manager. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams came to our city a few years back. (Not sure why.) When they showed up at his restaurant, all of the servers were starstruck and freaked out. So he was the one that took care of them. LOL! I envy him for that. ;-p

Marissa, August 31, 2011 10:32 am   reply Hi Shannon, how cool that your fiance got to meet Ryan and Rachel! What fun!

12

Megan, August 31, 2011 12:29 pm   reply How about the classic Gone With The Wind? Scarlett O'Hara's glamorous (and sometimes audacious) fashions would be a blast to try adapting for the modern Southern bride. Not to mention her gallant leading man, Captain Rhett Butler!

avatar
avatar

Marissa, August 31, 2011 2:12 pm   reply I think that sounds like a fabulous idea, Megan! I adore Scarlett and of course Rhett!

Barn Wedding Inspiration from Amy Rae Photography

August 30, 2011 by Nicole in Inspirations,Main | 12 comments

Let’s start this morning off with a soft and cozy inspiration shoot! What I love about barn weddings is the perfect juxtaposition of romantic details in rustic settings. Today’s barn inspiration from Amy Rae Photography provides so much for your eyes to feast upon with that killer Southern combo. Some of my favorite details include the duo of shabby chic chandeliers (one baby’s breath, one mason jar!), cozy lounge area and amazing altar. Kudos to Embellished Weddings for rounding up all the details! Read on for all the credits from this talented team below, and don’t miss the delicious-looking Southern eats from Abbey Road Catering!
