Southern Weddings Weekly Round-Up

October 28, 2011 by Nicole in Main | 1 comment

Oh, y’all. You are so good to us. The blush on our cheeks keeps getting redder and redder — your feedback on our fourth volume of Southern Weddings has been tremendous! Everyday, we exchange a ton of emails squealing about how great our readers, sponsors, and collaborators are. We love you all like a million Reese’s cups! (That’s saying a lot. Have you seen the SW girls around some Reese’s? Probably not because we eat them too quickly.) Check out our big thank you post!

To start off the week, we had to show you SWPS, V4 Style! We package every mailing by hand in our little office. This year, we had about 500 pre-orders to get out in just a couple of days!

We couldn’t have been happier for Tuesday, V4 release day, to come around! Y’all know that means a Giant Photo Contest! Find V4 in stores (or order online to have it shipped via SWPS), take a photo with your glossy new magazine and then tweet it (@iloveswmag) and email it to us. Five winners will get to choose from some fabulous prizes we’ll putting together!

With V4 on shelves, we had to post photos from our Southern by Design spread! Southern met Minnesota in this shoot by Maddy of The Inspired Bride and Paper Antler Photography. We’re crazy for the details like the blooms from Studio Fleurette, paper products by Amy Hardy and treats from Shauna Younge.

It’s giveaway madness this week! Sierra and I were giddy to attend the Design*Sponge book signing at Anthropologie, where we met Amy Azzarito and snagged a photo with Grace Bonney. After, we had our first V4 sighting at Barnes & Noble! In celebration of all new publications, we’re giving away a signed copy of Design Sponge at Home. Tell us where you found V4 for the chance to win!

The V4 gorgeousness continues with a Southern by Design feature where Southern meets Southern California. This punch inspired shoot brings a pop of color, a twist of modernization, and the cutest details you ever did see.

Food is at the heart of the best Southern traditions! This week in the Newlywed Kitchen, one of Marissa’s oldest and dearest friends shared her recipe for Pumpkin Cupcakes. It’s so good, it won her first place at the Greater Gulf State Fair when she was 10! That’s good cookin’, y’all.

This week’s featured Real Wedding Gallery was Meghan + Chris! Their creative mason jar escort cards and delicious-looking cake had us at hello.

Who’s up for some fun announcements?

This winter, The Clifton Inn in Charlottesville, Virginia is giving the ultimate gift to the wedding couple: the entire selection of guestrooms — up to 17 of them — are included at no charge with weddings that take place at The Clifton Inn from from December 2011 through mid-March 2012. To learn more about this offer for your friends and family, visit their site.

The St. Regis Atlanta introduces their new one-of-a-kind registry, St. Regis-try. The service for couples, friends and families offers opportunities for guests of the St. Regis Atlanta to register for and purchase custom experiences for their weddings, honeymoons, or bridal showers. The St. Regis-try makes gift giving easy by offering the opportunity to contribute to a series of memorable experiences at The St. Regis Atlanta during a guest’s stay ranging from dining to spa packages to extended overnight accommodations. To find out more, visit their site!

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Spot a V4? Tell us where you found it and be sure to follow us on Twitter and join the fun on Facebook!

Newlywed Kitchen :: Mary Greer’s Award-Winning Pumpkin Cupcakes

October 27, 2011 by Marissa in Main | 9 comments

How about a sweet little break from all the V4 excitement, y’all? Since it’s officially fall, I think it’s quite appropriate to share a recipe that’s bound to have you craving scarves, riding boots and a hot chocolate or two!

Not only is Greer one of my dearest/oldest/bestest friends in the whole world, but these pumpkin cupcakes are going to rock your world! AND, she might have the most adorable baby girl on the planet! (I’m not biased at all, she really is!) This recipe even won Greer first place at the Greater Gulf State Fair when she was 10 years old!

Greer and I forever ago as bridesmaids at her sister’s wedding

What you’ll need for the cupcakes:
4 eggs
2 cups of sugar
1 cup of vegetable oil
2 cups of all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 can of 100% pure pumpkin (15 oz can)

What you’ll need for the frosting:
1 package (16 oz) cream cheese, softened
6 tablespoons of butter, softened
5 cups of sifted powdered sugar
4 tablespoons of vanilla extract

Directions: (Cupcakes)
Beat eggs in a large mixing bowl; add all ingredients except frosting and mix well with an electric mixer. Spoon batter into paper-lined muffin pans, filling them three-fourths of the way full. Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees and bake for 20 minutes. Let cool and then frost with yummy cream cheese frosting.

Directions: (Frosting)
Combine cream cheese and butter; beat until light and fluffy. Add remiaining ingredients; beat until smooth. Frost and enjoy! And because Greer is a good Southern girl, sometimes she tops the cupcakes with smashed pecans.

All photos courtesy of the fabulous Greer Ladnier

Amanda, October 31, 2011 1:08 pm   reply Funny story: I can testify to the fact that these cupcakes are not quite so delicious without the sugar ingredient! I printed off the recipe on Friday morning and made the cupcakes Sunday night to take to my office for Halloween today. Wasn't really getting the reaction I thought I was gonna get from co-workers who tasted them. Then I tasted them and realized they tasted like a dog treat, haha! But with DE-LICIOUS icing! I have since checked the blog and discovered that sugar was left off the list of ingredients and now it all makes sense! Luckily the icing recipe made a ton of extra icing so I am going to give it another shot tonight and hopefully redeem myself at work. :)

avatar
avatar

Marissa, October 31, 2011 1:14 pm   reply Oh my stars!! I am so sorry Amanda! You must have printed it right after it was published! (I fixed it just minutes after it went up)! I am glad you tried the recipe though! Again, I am SO sorry! I'm glad it made for a funny story! xo, Marissa

avatar

Amanda, November 1, 2011 1:40 pm   reply Marissa: I gave the recipe another shot last night (with sugar!) and man alive! Those cupcakes are good! I have had a belly ache since noon, but it was worth it. And I think you're right, I must've printed the article right after you posted the recipe... Now I know that cupcakes need sugar. I gave my dogs several of the bottoms of the cupcakes from the sugar-free batch and they loved those. Take-aways: 1) leave sugar out of the recipe and you have yummy dog muffins, haha! Minus the icing, of course.

5

Kim, November 29, 2011 2:10 pm   reply I love to cook and try lots of new receipes. This is a definite keeper! Beyond moist and delicious. Thanks so much for posting. Everyone adored these.

Southern By Design :: Southern Meets Southern California

October 27, 2011 by Emily in Inspirations,Main | 8 comments

Y’all, you are in for a TREAT today. As you ladies + gents know, we usually feature three “Southern by Design” stories in each print edition. We had the first two nailed down (one of which you saw yesterday, and the other which you’ll see soon!), but the third one was stumping us. We knew we wanted to work with Summer from Grey Likes Weddings (because she’s AMAZING, obviously), but nothing was clicking until one word popped into our brains: punch! What could be more Southern and lovely than punch?? Summer and her styling partner in crime Cortnie did such a stupendous job modernizing the idea of a punch reception, and we love the Southern California flare with which they infused the shoot. And Braedon’s images — goodness, y’all! He blew it out of the park!

We hope you enjoy, and be sure to head over to the gallery to see even more images! The full story, of course, is in the print edition.

Make sure to check out Summer’s post on this shoot today, too!

The talented vendors:

Photography: Braedon Flynn // Styling and Art Direction: Summer Watkins of Grey Likes Weddings and Cortnie Purdy of Canvas and Canopy // Hair and Makeup: Kacee Geoffrey // Stationery: MaeMae Paperie // Calligraphy: Nancy Hopkins // Cake: Erica O’Brien // Punch Recipes: Snake Oil Cocktail Co. // Wedding Gown: Marchesa from Gabriella New York Bridal Salon // Bridesmaid Dresses: Luna Boutique and H&M // Hairpieces: Lo Boheme // Jewelry: Noaki Jewelry // Butterfly Shoes: Aruna Seth // Rentals: Urban Barn // Ladle and Cake Knife: Concept by Canvas and Canopy and Grey Likes Weddings, execution by Monkeys Always Look // Location: The Condor’s Nest Ranch

Spotted in Stores :: V4! (Plus the Design*Sponge Book Signing)

October 26, 2011 by Emily in InTheOffice,Main,News | 33 comments

Hey, y’all! Just a quick little post to share our excitement over seeing V4 in stores with our very own eyes!

Nicole and Sierra were the first to spot it, at the Barnes & Noble at The Streets at Southpoint in Durham, NC. Funny story: a B&N clerk actually came over and asked them to stop taking photos of the cover! They were all like, “Yeah, we MADE this magazine!”

N + S weren’t actually in Durham to stalk copies of V4, though. They were on their way to Anthropologie, to attend the book signing for Grace Bonney’s new Design*Sponge book! They even snagged a photo with Grace herself:

Fun fun! And want to know something even more fun? In the spirit of celebration for ALL new publications, we have one signed copy of the D*S book to give away! Just leave a comment below letting us know where you snagged your V4 — through the SWPS? At a bookstore? At your neighborhood Piggly Wiggly? :)
