Emily Plans a Wedding :: The Music

December 14, 2011 by Emily in Main,Personal | 15 comments

Hey, y’all! Welcome back to Emily Plans a Wedding! After my last post, which was quite long, I’ve got a bit of a simpler one to share with you today. Let’s talk about music!

I’m going to leave the ceremony for another day, and just concentrate on what we’ll be listening to at the reception in this post.

Right. So there are a few things you should probably know going into this discussion:

1. My taste in music is embarrassing. As in, it doesn’t embarrass me, but it probably should. One way to figure out if I’ll like a song? If your Grandma danced to it, it’s probably my groove. For real. I love big band and swing, and almost every song that was produced in the 40′s, 50′s, and 60′s. Sam Cooke, Frank Sinatra, The Young Rascals, The Marvelows, The Contours, The Pointer Sisters, The Supremes, Glenn Miller… yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes, please.

2. John does not enjoy dancing. Actually, that’s not true — he does enjoy dancing, and he is a good dancer, but he’s also kind of shy, and prefers to bust a move in the kitchen while cooking dinner instead of in the middle of a crowd on the dance floor.

3. I firmly believe that the number one factor that determines whether or not a dance floor is full is not the quality of the band, but whether or not the bride and groom are cutting a rug. And since we want a dance floor as full as this one below, we needed to figure out the best way to get John to shake his tail feather.

A Bryan Photo

Luckily, I was armed with the one memory I have of him actually pulling me onto the dance floor: our college senior formal. A live big band/swing band played that night, and we both loved it. We weren’t the only ones, either: all of our classmates were on the dance floor, too, and I’m pretty sure they didn’t all share my particular taste in music. There’s just something about those tunes that make people want to dance, regardless of their normal musical preferences or age! Ever since that night, I knew we needed to have a band at our wedding.

Can’t you just picture us cutting a rug like this? Photos by Brooke Schwab and Brooke Courtney.

We’ve requested info and demo CDs from a few bands, and are close to making a decision. The other day, though, I had a bit of a revelation: as much as I LOVE me some oldies, I also have a weakness for, umm, Rihanna. I was totally fine with not hearing her at our reception, but then, as John and I were car-dancing to “We Found Love” the other day (come on, you know you do it, too!), he said, “Why aren’t we going to play this at our wedding?” Excuse me?

Now that we are both at least tentatively interested in hearing Rihanna at our reception, we’ve come up with a possible new plan: the band plays for all but the last hour of the reception. With an hour to go, we switch over to an iPod playlist (piped through the band’s system, which will already have been set up to cover their breaks) and some more contemporary tunes. Creating a playlist ahead of time will allow us to pick songs that have a similar vibe as the band, so I’m hoping the transition wouldn’t be too harsh.

Both photos by Bryan Johnson

Since this is SUCH a new plan (literally hatched this week), I’d love to get some feedback. What do y’all think? Should we just stick with the band for the whole night? Should we go ahead and switch over at the T-1 hour mark? Will the transition be too harsh? Will it be weird to have an empty platform after the band leaves? Have any of you tried something similar? I would LOVE to hear your thoughts!

P.S. In case you missed a post…

uberbrides, December 14, 2011 9:46 am   reply Our idea? A combo - The band IS going to take a break or two. That's just the facts when they are playing 110%. To fill the gaps, work with a Pro DJ that you love to craft a dance playlist that can be run from an iPod.

avatar

Emily, December 14, 2011 10:04 am   reply Hi uberbrides! We don't really have a budget for a professional DJ since we're already spending the money on a band, but we're hoping a carefully crafted playlist, on a professional sound system, managed by professionals (the band members) will do the trick!

Lindsay, December 14, 2011 9:51 am   reply Great thoughts! We had a band and it was a huge sticky point with our parents, but it was worth every single penny. People danced the entire night! I saw people dance that I have never seen dance including my new hubby and his brothers. It was a blast! I still have guest talking about them. I would talk to the band about what they recommend. Ours said that they usually play jazz type music during cocktail hour, light music during dinner, oldies to get the party started and when it was going they switched to more pop music. It was a nice transition and worked out really well. By the last hour everyone is having so much fun, they will want to pep it up a bit. Good luck!

Clair F., December 14, 2011 10:13 am   reply Love that idea! I would like to do a mix of a fun band and then more contemporary music on an iPod. Let us know how that turns out!! I'm curious!

avatar
avatar

Emily, December 14, 2011 10:41 am   reply Hi Clair! I definitely will!

4

Amanda Noel, December 14, 2011 10:23 am   reply We are actualy switching between ipod and band throughout the night since the band we have is a "friendor" and we want to be able to give them long breaks to try the food and join the fun! I think as long as your sound system is good enough and you are enjoying the mix you will be fine! It should really only take you a song or two to transition between any style. And you will probably judge the transitions harsher than anyone else so if you are happy, your guests will be too!!

Katie, December 14, 2011 10:28 am   reply Don't be embarrassed! Oldies, motown, swing...it wouldn't be a southern wedding without a big band!! I think you may be surprised at how many pop songs must big bands cover, which would eliminate the need to switch over to an ipod (which may be a buzz kill if the crowd thinks the party is over as the band exits and tears down their equipment). My fiance' and I were at a wedding recently and when the big band lead sister busted out "Party in the USA" the crowd went NUTS! Good luck planning!

avatar
avatar

Emily, December 14, 2011 4:13 pm   reply Hey Katie! The only thing is, if I'm hearing Rihanna (or a country song, or whatever else we'd choose to put on our iPod mix) I think I'd want to hear the original version, not the band's version. We're choosing our band based on their repertoire of swing and big band tunes, so I'm not sure if they'd be able to (or I'd want them to!) play all of our current favorites. And yes, it would DEFINITELY be a buzz kill if the band starts taking down their equipment, so we're going to have to figure out a way around that!

6

Hi-Fi Weddings, December 14, 2011 10:49 am   reply I'm a HUGE music buff, and I love seeing what type of music couples choose to be on their Big Day soundtrack. I LOVE the idea of a band and an ipod! It's the best of both worlds! It's also a way for you to have the songs you truly adore serenade you on your wedding day (cause uh, someone try to tell me Sam Cooke doesn't make you weak in the knees). As long as the music on the ipod has the same volume as the band, I don't think it would be a huge deal. As far as the empty platform - you could always make that part of the dance floor one the band is off...maybe? Good luck picking out the tunes! I have a whole site dedicated to this if you need any help along the way :) PS - If you did go the ipod route I'd LOVE to know what you put on your mix ;)

avatar
avatar

Emily, December 14, 2011 4:11 pm   reply Hi there! Will do! I'd love to share our mix if we go this route :)

7

Madelynne Miller, December 14, 2011 3:17 pm   reply This is my idea - find the best of both worlds! A lot of good musicians can play contemporary stuff as well as old school and/or original stuff. Our guy plays dave mathews to usher to journey to ray lamontagne! They're out there and they're awesome!

avatar
8

Whitney, December 14, 2011 5:04 pm   reply I love that idea!! I feel like there is always one or the other, and generally a band (esp. a big band focused one) let's you have all the "cutting a rug -- partner" moments.. Whereas Top40s let's you just cut a rug with whoever is around you, which is equally fun.

avatar
avatar

Emily, December 15, 2011 9:54 am   reply Exactly! The swing/big band is definitely more geared towards those with a date, and though I think most of our guests will have a date, I think it will be fun to just get everyone together on the dance floor at the end of the night!

9

Desiree, December 14, 2011 11:49 pm   reply Hey Emily! I really love reading about your snippets from your wedding planning. It's an awesome peak into what my brides are going through {love}! I think since you're getting a live band - ask them if they can incorporate some newer tunes (pick like 5-10 songs that they could learn, maybe?). I know my band leader was stoked bc he hadn't heard of Zac Brown Band (this was over 2 years ago, btw) and he was so tickled to have learned some of their music for future gigs...all bc we really wanted to dance to Chicken Fried. And...yes, if you're having a band, they'll need breaks! So I think its a great plan to have a playlist ready for them to play in between...perfect time for "yellow diamonds in the skyyyy" :) xoxo

avatar
10

Kelly, December 17, 2011 12:17 pm   reply Go for it!!!! I've been to several weddings & dances where they do the more contemporary music at the end {when the older guests leave, usually}, and it's always a huge hit!

Southern Weddings :: An Introduction

December 13, 2011 by Emily in InTheOffice,Main | 1 comment

Hey, howdy, and happy Tuesday, y’all! Since the time between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day (or something like that…) is officially “engagement season,” we know we have lots of new belles just joining the Southern Weddings ranks. We wanted to take a sec to do a quick rundown of the spots where you can find Southern goodness, on this blog and beyond.

First, of course, you’ve got the main blog. We post here two-four times a day on a variety of topics related to weddings and the South. There will always be gorgeous real weddings, but we also post fun features and series. Some of our favorites right now are Emily’s wedding planning posts, our Southern Brides of the Month, Marissa’s fashion and style posts, and our recent series on Southern wedding traditions.

New readers, be sure to check out our real weddings gallery to catch up on years’ worth of inspiring Southern weddings! You can search by color and state, too.

Don’t miss the editorial galleries, either! We’ve posted in-depth looks at almost all of our editorial features from V3 and V4. While you’re at it, why not flip through online editions of V1, V2, and V3? You can always purchase copies of our print editions at this link.

Engaged ladies, your new best friend is our Blue Ribbon Vendor Directory. We’ve stocked it with more than sixty of our favorite vendors across the South and beyond, and we’re adding more talents every day! Vendors do pay to be listed (full disclosure!), but they also must apply to be admitted, and we review each application as a team, and follow up with their references. Only the best for our belles! The Blue Ribbon Vendors you see listed as “Editors’ Picks” have been featured in one of our print editions, so they get an extra-special stamp of SW approval.

If you’re well on your way with wedding planning, it’s time to start thinking about the honeymoon! The Honey List is our collection of SW-approved vacation spots.

Before we move beyond the site, be sure to get acquainted with all of the Southern Weddings ladies, if we haven’t yet been formally introduced! You can see all of our profiles here, including Lara (Editor in Chief), Emily (Art Director), Whitney (Director of Advertising), Marissa (Features Editor), Sierra (Assistant Art Director), and Nicole (Editorial Assistant). We also post about goings-on in our office of ladies in a special “In the Office” category.

Now that we’re better acquainted, we know you’re going to want to spend some quality time with us, am I right? Lucky for you, we’re quite social! We have one main Twitter account (@iloveswmag), where we share recent blog posts, happenings in the office, behind-the-scenes deets on shoot days, industry discounts and sample sales, news about Southern friends and events, and much more. All the SW ladies have their own accounts, too. So if you like business + branding, follow Lara, or if paper pretties and mini food are more your thing, follow Emily! (Or both, of course!) Nicole’s here, Sierra’s here, Marissa’s here, and Whitney, of course, is here.

Next, there’s Facebook. You may all feel free to like us here :) We share much of the same insider news and details that we do on Twitter, but it’s fun to see the conversations develop on FB. Plus, we sometimes ask fun polls on our Facebook page, and love hearing what y’all have to say!

Lastly, there’s Pinterest! You can follow Southern Weddings here. We love to pin photos from blog and print features, and it’s great for y’all, too, because we sort photos into different, fun categories. So if you’re looking for sweet tea + other drinks, biscuits + other delectables, or bow ties + boutonnieres, we’ve got you covered. We also have boards for ceremonies, fashion + style, bouquets, sweets, Southern traditions… you name it. And of course, each color has its own board, too. Get pinning!

And while you’re there, feel free to follow each individual account, too: Lara, Emily, Marissa, Whitney, Sierra, and Nicole. (If you need a Pinterest invite, just let us know!)

And there you have it! Southern Weddings in a nutshell (make that a pecan husk, natch). Questions, just ask! And if you’re new around these parts, introduce yourself below! We LOVE to meet our readers!

Southern Wedding Traditions :: A Moment of Prayer

December 13, 2011 by Marissa in Inspirations,Main | 16 comments

When it comes to Southern traditions, I love them all. Yes, even the crazy ones! But, when we scheduled this feature, I didn’t even have to search for images, because I have a a whole folder on my computer filled with brides, grooms and wedding parties praying. It’s one of my VERY favorite wedding moments ever.

After much research, I found that there isn’t usually a specific prayer being prayed, just a sweet moment to pause and give thanks and ask for blessings. Usually this takes place in the last few moments before the ceremony, when everyone is just buzzing with nervous excitement. You might notice that in most of the images the group is placing their hands upon the bride or groom. In Christian churches, the practice of placing your hands on the bride or groom is used as both a symbolic and formal method of invoking the Holy Spirit. If you’ve experienced this yourself, I’m sure you know how calming and emotional it can be.

I haven’t been able to find where the moment of prayer tradition originated, but it is rooted in faith, a spirit of thanksgiving, and love.

Image credit from left to right and top to bottom: Brooke Courtney, Millie Holloman, Our Labor of Love, Studio A Photography, and J. Malahy.

One beautiful way to incorporate a friend or loved one who isn’t in your bridal party is to ask them to lead the prayer. This would be a perfect request for a godparent or another close relative, and I’m sure they would be touched to be asked.

Did you or will you pray before your ceremony? Do you know where this tradition came from? If you do, leave comment in the section below.

Desiree, December 14, 2011 11:55 pm   reply ahhh ~ totally a favorite moment of mine! I had a moment of prayer with my mother and father before our ceremony and I asked my uncle (a former minister) to give the dinner blessing. His dinner blessing was above and beyond what I ever expected. Sort of like the 'laying on of hands' that Marissa described, but he requested that ALL of our guests reach our their hands towards us, and they shouted "Bless Them! Bless Them!". I literally felt my world shake and I knew that I had an entire community's support in my marriage. THANK YOU for reminding me of this, Marissa! xo

My wedding colors are navy, slate blue, white and a touch of green. We are incorporating cotton and lace and these clutches would be the PERFECT complement to our southern theme.

Melissa W., December 13, 2011 10:49 am   reply My bridesmaids are all people I consider my best friends, those that I know will be there for me any time, any day. We became friends throughout different times in our lives, but they're all just as equally important to me. Jenny is my MOH and we have been friends since high school. My sisters, Vicki and Samantha. My longest friend, Heather, whom I'm known since we were five years old. Jodie, whom I've played softball with since we were in middle school. Christina and I have been friends since we were in color guard and winter guard in high school. Ty and I have been friends since high school, and continued as she has moved up and down the east coast:)

Mary L, December 13, 2011 11:36 am   reply My bridesmaids are the girls I grew up with. They are the girls who I cried with over scraped knees, then broken hearts. They are the girls I played tennis with in the summers, threw snowballs with in the winter, and who were there for me through every milestone in my life, and I in theirs. They are the ones who thought I was cool when I had braces and loved Nsync. I have met many friends through the years - college/Med school, but when it came time to decide, it was a no brainer. Hands down, my four best friends from home.

My maid of honor is my bestie. We are actually from the same small East Texas town but didn't know each other until after I re-located to Austin and worked together. My bridesmaid has been one of my closest friends for the last ten years even though we've never lived in the same time zone! We met in a children's organization and have traveled the country together. These clutches are absolutely lovely and would be the perfect compliment to my navy, white, and silver accented wedding. I could even give a clutch to each of the Mothers!

avatar
56

Quite literally sometimes. We used to tie our ankles together and go everywhere 3 legged race style.), two of my best friends from college, Morgan and Dianna, (one was my roommate and the other my class buddy), and my good friend Meagan (we passed many hours in high school playing games in class and many hours in college keeping each other informed of all the gossip from back home).

Although I have gone on to college and made other great girlfriends, these girls have know me best and have always been there for me. They were the first to call me after my dad died, the first to come see me at the showing and the first I share all of my wedding plans with. Even though we are all spread out all over the country, every time we get together it is like we were never apart. I can't imagine marrying the love of my life without these girls by my side.

153

Erin, December 16, 2011 10:09 am   reply I'm obviously biased, but I definitely have the three very best bridesmaids in the whole wide world. Let me tell you why they're so fabulous: ~ Lisa, my Maid of Honor. She's my Fiancee's sister, and one of the sweetest people you'll meet. I don't get along with many girls, but Lisa and I click. We were obviously meant to be. ~ Lindley, my college partner in crime. She'll always make you laugh! She is quite possibly one of the funnest people I've ever met...one day I hope she'll be "crazy Aunt Linny" to our kids. ~ Dina, my female soul mate. She's Lisa's sister-in-law, but she's always felt like a sister to me. From the moment I met her, I felt like we were meant to be friends -- that sort of "I feel like I've known you forever" vibe. These clutches are do-die-for GORGEOUS, and I would love to gift them to my three favorite girls -- they deserve something this lovely! The other two I'd give to my mom and my Fiancee's mom -- because they deserve something pretty too!! <3

My bridesmaids will be a range from another friend I've had since middle school that I can guar-an-teeeee will be the life of the party, a friend I made sitting in lecture in college one day. She just looked at me and said "we're going to be best friends." Low and behold, she is standing next to me on my wedding day :) I also have my super soon to be sister in law, and one very special friend that has stuck with me through thick and thin that I met working an absolutely miserable job together after she moved from Baton Rouge. :)

Southern Hospitality :: Richmond Tote

December 12, 2011 by Sierra in Inspirations,Main | 4 comments

Welcome to the fourth installment of our Southern Hospitality feature! Each month, we pick a Southern city and an expert host. Our host shares their favorite items custom to that city that would be perfect packed into a welcome bag for family and friends at a weekend wedding. Just one more perk of attending a destination wedding!

This month, we’re headed to Richmond, Virginia, the bustling capital of the Commonwealth. I had the pleasure of visiting Richmond last spring and actually happened to make many Richmond friends at our V4 shoot in Williamsburg last summer! One of the talented people I met was the stylist for the shoot, Courtney Spencer of Merriment Events. This was before she had her precious baby girl! Courtney also styled one of my favorite real weddings from V4, Katie + Max. You know I love colorful weddings, right?

Since Courtney is based in Richmond, we knew she would be the perfect expert. I hope you’ll enjoy her picks!

A. Petites Bouchées Macarons. French macarons made locally in Richmond by Veronica Perez. Can be made to coordinate with your wedding colors! (priced per order)

B. Popptags. These quirky, letterpress gift tags are made by my friend, Anya in Richmond. Anya also takes custom orders and could personalize a tag for your wedding using your logo, monogram, etc. ($9.95 for 3 or priced per custom order)

C. A Bottle of Virginia Wine. A bottle of wine would be lovely paired with a custom wine tag from Popptags (above). Wine can be purchased locally in bulk from Once Upon a Vine. (price varies)

D. Carriage House Cheese Straws. No self respecting Southerner would ever entertain without cheese straws! These are made here in Richmond. ($6.95 for 6 oz bag)

E. Blanchard’s Coffee. Roasted in Richmond. (price varies)

F. A Ticket for a Trolley Tour. Richmond was one of the first cities in the country to travel by electric street car, and this year, the trolley is making its return to Richmond. Wouldn’t it be lovely to treat guests to a trolley tour of historic Richmond? (custom pricing)

G. Hub’s Virginia Peanuts. (price varies)

H. Chocolate Cravings. Made here in Richmond, it’s truly some of the best chocolate you’ll ever taste! Wouldn’t it be fun to work with the owner to concoct a signature flavor for your wedding? (price varies)

I. Route 11 Chips. Made in Virginia and a staple locally. ($35.00 for a case of 30 2 oz bags)

J. Richmond Gungho Guide. The definitive pocket guide to Richmond produced locally by Kelly Brown. (free)

K. A Copy of Virginia Living Magazine. ($4.95)

L. Lavender Fields Farm Roobios Loose Tea. Perfect for pairing with Lavender Fields honey! ($6.00 for 2 oz bag of tea, $7.50 for 8 oz jar of honey)

M. RVA Playing Cards from Quirk Gallery. 52 reasons to love Richmond from 52 Richmond insiders. ($9.95 for pack)

N. Virginia is For Lovers Pencils. ($49.90 for 100)

We paired Courtney’s expert picks with a custom tote design from another Richmond native, Lauren of Lauren O’Neill Design, who designed this adorable Richmond is for Lovers tote for us! Want one? Simply download the overlay here and take it to your local screen-printer. Thank you for the fun design, Lauren!

From the Richmond area and have additional suggestions to add to our tote? What did you love about Richmond if you’ve visited before? Have a city in mind for future posts? Comment below and let us know!
