Classic North Carolina Wedding by Kellie Kano

October 25, 2012 by Nicole in Main,Real Southern Weddings | 4 comments

Kelsey + Brandon met, fell in love and said their vows just a few minutes down the road from us! The NC State alums created a perfectly sweet Southern fete full of details and traditions that we adore. Though the couple’s bourbon bar (adorned with bow ties, no less!) and beautifully lined tent rank as highlights from this wedding, I have to say that Brandon’s wardrobe change before the reception is a favorite feature of mine! Who says gents can’t have a dapper white dinner jacket to dance the night away in? Big hugs to Kellie Kano for sharing this wedding with us! P.S. Remember Kelsey? We featured her bridal shower a few months back! She’s also one of our Southern Bride Bloggers :) P.P.S. Be sure to check back in on Saturday to see this wedding come to life in a video by Inkspot Crow!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I tried on dresses a few times (including an impromptu appointment at Saks in New York) before heading to Alexia’s. I knew I wanted a flowy and romantic dress, but was open to help from my consultant. As I was describing what I thought I wanted, my consultant said she had a dress in mind. I tried on a bunch of dresses that day, but the Reem Acra really stood out in my mind. I really loved the blush under layer, but when we looked at different sash options, I was sold. I love that my dress was traditional, but had some personal touches too.
Did you decide to do a “first look”? We did! It’s something that Kellie (our photographer) really believes in and she sold us on it at our very first meeting. It was wonderful to be able to take that time for just the two of us. The rest of the day was such a blur that I truly cherish those moments we had together. It made me even more excited to walk down the aisle to Brandon. Both moments were completely different and perfect in their own way.

Did you write your own vows? We decided to recite traditional vows. In our meetings with our minister, we discussed the different options and decided that the traditional route was the right thing for us. It was so special to know that we were saying the same vows that so many happily married couples have also said.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? “Union” by Robert Fulghum and 1 Corinthians Chapter 13
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding. Walking down the aisle, walking back up the aisle, first dance? Our entrance music was Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring and Air from Suite #3. I walked down the aisle to Pachelbel’s Cannon, something that I’d always pictured myself doing. We exited the ceremony to Hornpipe, Water Music. We had a string quartet for the ceremony and they made everything sound so beautiful. It was so exciting to hear the music start up and get to experience the moment I’d been picturing for years. Our first dance was to Joshua Radin’s “You Got What I Need.” We both really liked that it wasn’t your typical first dance song and the words really resonated with us.

Describe the proposal. Since our story began on our now alma mater’s campus, Brandon decided that it would be the perfect place to ask me to be his wife. I unknowingly helped the proposal along when I sent my class ring to get fixed. Our friend Cody was in charge of ordering class rings at the time and he helped Brandon get everything in place. As planned, Cody called to let me know that he had arranged for my class ring to be placed in the belltower overnight, per NC State tradition. Cody and Brandon arranged for the 3 of us to meet at the belltower after the Homecoming Parade. I was completely oblivious to what was about to happen as I rushed ahead of Brandon to meet Cody to get my class ring. Cody proceeded to tell us a little about the history of the memorial inside the belltower as he unlocked the doors and took us inside. I picked up and opened the box expecting to see my class ring. Instead was a note that said, “turn around.” I turned around in confusion and there was Brandon down on one knee! I was so surprised that I asked a few times if it was all real before saying, “Yes, of course!” It was such a special and memorable proposal and I’m so happy that Brandon was able to surprise me. As an added bonus, we are the first couple to get engaged inside the belltower!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Everything. We were both born and raised in the South and that’s definitely helped shape who we are, and we tried to reflect that in our wedding. I think the biggest Southern tradition we included in our wedding was our faith, family, and friends. There’s nothing more Southern then getting together with the people you love to have a great time and to eat, especially when it’s fried chicken, grits, and biscuits. We also included Southern touches in our décor. Brandon and I made strawberry jam for our favors and used cotton bolls as our escort cards.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was the bourbon bar. We wanted our wedding to reflect both of our personalities and interests, and bourbon is one of Brandon’s. We spent so much time and care picking out all of the details and it turned out perfectly. We used vintage bourbon barrels for the base and a 100+ year old door as the bar topper. We also tied some of Brandon’s favorite bowties around my mom and aunt’s mint julep cups for a final touch.

For our cake we wanted something simple. We went with white buttercream icing accented with fresh flowers. The best part of the cake was definitely what was inside. We chose a white cake layered with French vanilla mousse and fresh strawberries. It was delicious.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Brandon and I first met when my sorority was partnered with his fraternity for NC State’s Homecoming in the Fall of 2007. I was living in our sorority house and Brandon was president of his fraternity at the time, so we were both very involved in that week. During the Homecoming activities, we got to know each other and decided to pursue our relationship. For our first date, we grabbed some coffee before taking a walk. Despite the cold weather and the terrible coffee, we had a wonderful time talking and just being together. We both knew we had found something special.
In what month did you get married? June (June 30, 2012)
How many guests attended your wedding? 170
Describe your wedding flowers: I adored our flowers. Since we were having a tented outdoor reception, I wanted it to feel like a garden party. The mix of soft peaches, pinks, and creams of the peonies, roses, and Queen Anne’s lace with the green of the lamb’s ear did exactly that. We also mixed mercury glass and glass cake stands in to give the centerpieces an almost antique feel.
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Our photographer. We not only treasure our pictures, but we’re so happy to know Kellie Kano. She is so talented and it was wonderful getting to work with her for our wedding. The way she captured our day and the emotion is exactly how I had pictured it in my mind and it doesn’t get any better than that.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? This isn’t our “most memorable moment”, but I just have to throw it out there. Y’all, it was HOT. We got married the last weekend in June which just happened to be the weekend that we broke some heat records in North Carolina. It was 105 at the peak of the day and still in the high 90s at 10:00 that night. Our guests were so amazing and I am so grateful that they dealt with the heat to be there for us. Our entire wedding was full of moments that we’ll never forget, but the most memorable moment of the day was the surprise fireworks. Having planned out every single detail of the wedding, I really wasn’t expecting any surprises. Our best man’s dad went to South Carolina to get the “good kind” and along with some of our friends, they shot them off toward the end of the reception. It was such an awesome surprise and made us feel so great to have friends that would go above and beyond for us on our wedding day.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Take it slow. I know it’s exciting in the beginning and all you want to do is plan, plan, plan, but just enjoy that time. There will be plenty of time to figure everything out. Meet with a bunch of vendors and then meet with some more. You’ll find people that you just click with, and that might not happen the first time.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? Brandon got a new job not too long after the wedding, so we’ve been enjoying settling into our new routine and enjoying life as a married couple. We’re also hoping to get a dog in the next few months.

Bridal Market 2012 Part 5: Heidi, Sarah, Pnina

October 24, 2012 by Marissa in Fashion and Style,Main | 12 comments

I hope you’ve been enjoying our Bridal Market coverage so far! If you missed them, be sure you check out Parts 1, 2, 3 and 4! They’re some real stunners within these posts!

Y’all! Yes, that is all I can say when I think of this collection… y’all!! First up we are headed to my neck of the woods, sweet home Alabama, for the gloriousness that is Heidi Elnora! In true Southern fashion, Heidi not only welcomed us to see her ah-mazing collection with a big ol’ hug, but she also affectionately called everyone within voice range “sugar”, “darlin’” or something equally as charming! We were so lucky to sit down with her and our sweet friends from Ashley Baber Weddings to have a little Southern squealfest!

How much do you die over this bow? I know, we could barely contain ourselves when Heidi showed us the Rubie Joe! This gathered a-line gown has hand appliquéd lace and a dupioni silk skirt, and is accessorized with that fab Heidi Elnora Beauty Bow.

If you followed along with our Insta/Tweet coverage, you’d know that the “Opal Byrd” gown above literally made me flip out! Not only is it ridiculously beautiful, but the bodice is hand beaded with pearls and rhinestones IN Alabama. This princess ball gown also featured a silk gazar peplum with a chapel train. I die!

Yes, on the left right there is the infamous Kate Grace gown that was featured in V4! When I saw this dress, I knew we had to be sure we showed it to y’all! It’s got pockets, and the most delicious silk bodice!

Congratulations, Heidi, on an amazing new collection AND a soon-to-be amazing new addition to your family!

We’ve already introduced y’all to our next sweet friend, Sarah Seven in this post, so we were so excited to see her collection up close!

This gold little number (above on the left) is appropriately named After Midnight and is like a confetti party in dress form! Talk about fun!

My personal favorite (below on the right) not only has a fabulous name, Please and Thank You, but its tulle skirt and embellished belt make for a casual yet glamorous look.

And we so loved Sarah’s skyline background! One of the funnest booths we had the pleasure to stop at!

Oh, Pnina, Pnina, Pnina! This was my first time seeing the famous Pnina Tornai, and boy did she bring it! Pnina’s new collection was inspired by her love of flowers, romance, femininity and allure.

The Pnina collection was full of divine silk organza, floral embroidery and silver thread accented by Swarovski crystals. Isn’t the back of this gown a showstopper? That’s a shimmer taffeta ball gown skirt, with layers of taffeta folded into a giant bow on the lower back and right shoulder.

When it comes to exquisite detail work, Pnina has that on lock! Pearl encrusted flowers and Chantilly lace cover this dramatic deep v back fit and flair.

Can you believe it? The last gal in the finale was wearing full-on feather and diamond wings! Yes, wings! What a show to end our fabulous trip on!

Big hugs to the super talented Kat Harris for bringing these gowns to life with her images! Our iPhones could never have done them justice!

Stay tuned, because we’ve got a bit more Bridal Market fun coming up tomorrow. It may include a fab little shoot of KNW and me with Kat!

Now that you’ve seen almost all the gowns, which is your favorite?

'Please and thank you' is my favorite Sarah Seven gown and the top right Pnina with the big bow is amazing. I typically feel her stop is too over the top for my taste, but that dress is amazing. I would totally have worn it!

Lisa, October 25, 2012 10:34 am   reply Oh my goodness gracious, these are all AMAZING!! I'm going to have to pick the Heidi Elnora Opal Byrd as my favorite from this round, but I would like Sarah Seven's After Midnight for myself and Pnina's tulle gown just to stare at :)

Dee Shore, October 25, 2012 5:39 pm   reply Along with Jenny Packham, Sarah Seven is one of my favorite Bridal designers. Her dresses are just feminine and elegant without all the poof. In my opinion, a work of art.

Bridal Market 2012 Part 4: Badgley, Lula, Watters, Donna

October 24, 2012 by Kristin in Fashion and Style,Main | 10 comments

Can you believe we are only 20 days away from the arrival of V5? To help pass the time, join me for another look into Bridal Market 2012. I have lots of gorgeous gowns to share, plus an impromptu mini SW fashion show!! (PS: Don’t miss out on Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3.)

We will start with the always amazing Badgley Mischka.

If I had to pick one word to describe this collection from Badgley Mischka, it would be glamour. The pleated tulle, delicate Chantilly lace and crystal embroidery (which was on almost EVERY gown – oh my stars) was soft and subtle and at the same time oh so glamorous. As a traditional ‘ballgown bride,’ I couldn’t help but wonder about trying on one of these lovely form-fitting beauties.

Our next step was a good ol’ squeal fest as we met and became fast friends with all the lovely LulaKate ladies. It was so fun to see these dresses in person, since they frequently make appearances on the blog in Real Wedding posts. Look for a few of these beauties in V5, too!

Somehow the LulaKate ladies convinced us to pull the frocks that we had been drooling over and have a mini SW fashion show. Marissa snagged a beautiful lace and striped dress with a detachable bow-belt, and I picked a lovely grey and white rugby stripe dress with pockets! After trying them on and prancing around, we decided we needed a place to wear these lovely dresses again.

Isn’t Katherine, the brilliant creator of LulaKate, just adorable? We were so grateful for her and her team and all their Southern hospitality.

Up next was Watters. During this show we were able to preview both the Watters and Wtoo collections, and boy oh boy were there a LOT of lovely dresses.

The camellia lacy overlay on the gown above added a layer of lovely texture to an already beautiful tulle ballgown. And of course, how can you not love the whisper pink beauty below with the hand-beaded detailing? We saw a lot of soft blush colors during Bridal Market this year, and this was definitely one of the prettiest.

The lovely C20 collection had some great LBD options that would be perfect for bridesmaids or maybe for a rehearsal dinner? This crewneck illusion lace dress was so chic, and I died over the hidden pockets in the sleeveless black satin number.

Finally, we stopped by the lovely Donna Morgan booth to take a peek at the fresh new styles and colors in their 2013 bridesmaid collection. We loved seeing the work of our friends Trent Bailey and Jackie of Merci New York on the walls of the Donna Morgan booth. The new campaign is gorgeous, y’all!

The coral dress, with its sassy texture, seemed like it would be the perfect thing to dance the night away in. And of course, we were all big fans of the stylish lace peplum in delicate pink.

We’ve got two more Bridal Market posts coming up, so stay tuned! BIG huge thanks to Kat Harris for photographing all these beauties for us!

P.S. Which is your favorite gown from this post? So hard to choose!

My grandma made my baby blanket out of green gingham and I've been looking for a way to include something of hers in my upcoming March wedding...this could be the perfect accent for my dad to wear to walk me down the aisle as I marry my South African fiance, Pieter. Plus, my colors are green and navy for our Easter 2013 weekend wedding...

Bridal Market 2012 Part 3: Ines, Anne, Rivini

October 23, 2012 by Kristin in Fashion and Style,Main | 8 comments

Yeehaw, y’all!

And the gorgeousness continues with Part 3. I couldn’t let Marissa have all the fun of sharing Bridal Market 2013 with y’all, now could I? Catch up on Part 1 and Part 2 before digging in to this next round of beauty, starting with Ines Di Santo.

Ines Di Santo captivated our attention with her beautiful collection, inspired by what Ines considers one of Europe’s most romantic cities, Venice. The beautiful lines and decadent fabrics of these trumpet style gowns were accented by lovely lace and bead-work adornments.

I loved all the layers of organza in this next sweetheart ballgown. This romantic off-the-shoulder beauty garnered gasps from both Marissa and me. And of course, I loved the delicate bow detail.

And we got the great pleasure of snapping a photo after the show with our friend Kristy Rice. A fun surprise? Kristy designed the beautiful Iphone cases seen here.

From the Ines Di Santo show we dashed straight to the coffee shop around the corner because I was begging for a little burst of caffeine. Thankfully, Marissa and Kat agreed. With coffee in hand, we headed to Pier94 for Anne Barge.

I love these preshow sneak peeks that Kat Harris snapped. Y’all, these shows are masterpieces, and the girls come out one after the other. I can only imagine how crazy it is backstage during the actual show.

Yes! This is the lovely Ms. Anne Barge. We managed to snag a picture with her after the show. And I have to say, her dresses reflect her sweet disposition. She couldn’t have been more sweet or gracious when we introduced ourselves.

Aren’t these lovely deep Vs breathtaking, and the birdcage veils so posh? During the show, one of these lovely hair accents fell off, and the model gracefully caught it without missing a beat and continued down the runway! Her feat was definitely worthy of applause and cheers from the audience.

One of my favorite ‘trends’ that we saw during our time in New York were all the amazing gown back details. Doesn’t this floral illusion back just make you swoon? This collection was packed with flowing silk organza, lace, and delicate bows – perfect for a romantic Southern fete.

On to the ballet studio for the ice crystal inspired collection from Rivini! Rita Vinieris is the brilliant mind behind this delicate collection, which was inspired by the softness of snowflakes and the Ice Hotel in Sweden.

Accordingly, this collection was filled with beading and delicate embellishment. This stunning crystallized blouse was unlike anything else we saw on the runway. I love how it seems to shimmer in the light and add a sense of elegance and barely-there warmth. The girls retraced their steps so we got to see each dress up close, twice, which was a real treat.

Stay tuned for more Bridal Market adventures tomorrow as we head to our next stop! BIG huge thanks to Kat Harris for photographing all these beauties for us!

P.S. Which is your favorite gown so far?

Kate Collison, October 23, 2012 8:03 am   reply Great coverage, ladies! I'm just loving the illusion details. Favorites include the cap sleeve, illusion neckline from Christos (first on the left) and the Deep-V illusion backs from Amsale (with a choice of embellishment or without? Lovely!) The Anne Barge collection has some beautiful illusion backs and even shoulders, too! Favorite gown so far? Illusion back from Amsale without embellishment. Clean, classic, so gorgeous. Enjoy the rest of your trip!

Kristin, October 23, 2012 2:16 pm   reply Madelynne! I couldn't agree more. I loved every dress in the Anne Barge collection. And I agree that the detailed floral illusion back was stunning! It definitely took my breath away when she turned around, however, the second to last dress (blush with the deep V + ruffles + bow) was my favorite of the collection. Such gorgeous details and I loved the way it swooshed!!

Madelynne Moulton, October 24, 2012 8:43 am   reply Kristin: What did the front of it look like? It really is stunning!

Emily, October 23, 2012 9:37 am   reply Alrighty, here are my picks for today! From Ines, I am loving the one with the lace shoulder as well as the blush colored one with the lace bateau neckline. From Anne Barge, I adore the simple one-shoulder number near the bottom. And from Rivini, my pick is the top one!
