Georgia Wedding by Justin DeMutiis with Classic Glam Style

Have y’all been enjoying a look into our our newest issue through all the gor-geous editorials the last couple of days? Heavens, I know I have, and I surely can’t pick a favorite. Can you?

However, I sure can pick a boatload of favorites out of this classic yet glamorous wedding from Justin DeMutiis. Hello, I die over Blair’s monogram veil, and that’s just the beginning! Y’all, there are so many beautiful details in this wedding that I could gush for days. But to me, it’s the small details that matter most, like how B + B incorporated Brian’s family tradition of opening poppers before Christmas dinner by using them as place cards. And how they cut their cake with Blair’s late grandmother’s wedding knife. Not too mention how Blair worked with Jade Lee from Lovelee Affairs on just the perfect Southern menu – yum!

Oh my stars! Those silver sparkly shoes were made for dancing, and that Anna Maier gown… Blair, you got style, my friend!

Let’s hear a little more about that stunning gown! I looked both in Seattle (where I live) and in Atlanta (where I am from). I tried on about a million tulle fit and flares but still had not found ‘the one’ and was afraid I never would. After a long day of searching, some silver beading caught my eye. The dress was so different than anything else I was looking at that the woman helping me thought the dress had been grabbed by mistake. The gown’s bubble hem and stunning appliqués on the bodice made me swoon. THIS was the dress I was going to marry Brian in.

Don’t you love Blair’s dad’s face as they do their father daughter first look? So sweet!

I kind of adore the story of how these two first met: My sorority was hosting a philanthropy basketball tournament and I was assigned to be the coach for Brian’s fraternity. I went to his house to drop off the schedule and Brian answered the door. I thought it was adorable that he shook my hand as he introduced himself. He requested that I bring orange slices and Capri suns so I showed up to the first game with about 10 pounds of each.

Describe your wedding flowers: We stuck with mainly white hydrangeas and white roses with accents of peach and blush flowers. My favorite arrangements were in these oversized mint julep cups. They looked amazing on our long estate tables.

Y’all know I about flipped when I saw this gorgeous veil complete with Blair’s monogram!

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding. Fortunately, our church has an amazing organ. We choose songs that shared our excitement for the day but also our reverence towards the commitment we were about to make to each other. Our mothers walked down the aisle to the same song my mother walked down the aisle to on her wedding day. I walked down to the traditional Wedding March. For our first dance, we choose” Love Is Not a Fight” by Warren Barfield. One lyric in the song is “love is a shelter from a raging storm.” Those words perfectly capture the comfort and peace Brian’s love provides me.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We did traditional vows followed by personal words of affirmation. He told me, “I will lead you and I will never stop seeking you or seeking the Lord. I told him, “You will wake every day in a home where you are wanted, where you are supported, and where you are loved.”
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? My brother read Colossians 3: 12-17 and Brian’s sister said a prayer of blessing right before we were announced as husband and wife.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? My wedding planner and I worked really hard to create the perfect Southern menu. So many of our Northwestern guests only had an idea of what Southern cooking would be like and we wanted to blow them away. We searched for months for the perfect recipes and went over every detail with the venue. It was really important to me that we include traditional Southern items like pimento cheese, grits, and Coca-Cola barbeque sauce, but in a elevated way. From fried green tomato BLTs to our shrimp & grits bar to our spiked Arnold Palmer and my Dad’s famous ginger ale bourbon tonic… It was all yummy and perfect.

Our cake was a beautiful five-tiered pink/peach fondant cake with two beautiful sugar magnolia flowers. We cut the cake with a cake knife given to me by my grandmother. She died just a few months before our wedding but I still felt her love with us that day, especially when we were able to use her knife.

Describe the proposal. Brian took me to the site of our first date, where we had sat in a park next to the restaurant overlooking Puget Sound. Brian had set up a semicircle of wedding photos of each of our parents and grandparents and in the middle he had placed the bible which I gave him as an anniversary present. He got down on one knee and proposed with one of our friends hiding in the distance taking pictures to capture the whole thing.
In what month did you get married? September
How many guests attended your wedding? 155 people
Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? One of the first photographers we met with really encouraged us to do a first look. He said that it would really help with any nervousness and we would get to make out the whole day as opposed to just seeing each other for the ceremony and reception. We ended up choosing to do a first look and both really appreciated all of the extra kisses we were able to sneak in.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: As a tradition in Brian’s family, they open poppers before Christmas dinner and wear paper crowns so we used poppers as place cards and had our guests join us in wearing gold paper crowns during dinner.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Editing. I wanted a modern/vintage/classy/Southern/formal/laid-back wedding .
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? My dress!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Be a gracious host. As you plan your day, keep in mind what experience you want your guests to have as they help you celebrate this amazing occasion. Try to think of ways to invite your guests to share in the love you have for each other and anticipate what they might need to stay comfortable and in the mood to celebrate with you!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? I knew marrying Brian would be my greatest adventure. As he finishes his last year of dental school, we are now looking at several residency programs around the country. We both have faith God will shepherd us as we begin to lay the foundation for our marriage and future family no matter what city we call home.

Southern Weddings V5: Virginia is for Lovers

November 27, 2012 by Emily in Inspirations,Main | 12 comments

Yesterday we traveled to gorgeous Charleston, and today, we’re “up North” in Virginia! V5′s Virginia is for Lovers shoot was set at the beautiful Tuckahoe Plantation, which is both the boyhood home of Thomas Jefferson and an active wedding venue! A few shots of the lovely property:

Even though we were visiting on the hottest summer day, everything was still breathtakingly beautiful! Katie Stoops did a magnificent job capturing the scene, including a few classic Southern details, like this gold foil and letterpress monogram invitation by The Lettered Olive.

You just never know how things are going to work out at a photo shoot, and I love that our bride ended up wearing earrings belonging to Courtney, our stylist!

This beautiful gown is by Pronovias, from Bella Rosa Bridal in Richmond, and if I’m remembering correctly, is about $2,000! A steal for such a classic and lovely design.

Recognize anyone familiar? We were thrilled to welcome back Marissa, one of our readers, who modeled for us last year in the Charleston polo shoot! (That’s her on the right.) She came to our V5 launch party, too, so we have a very soft place for her in our hearts.

There’s something kind of old-school about the round menus laid on top of the china, but I really love it! The Lettered Olive did a beautiful job with these, too.

Little gold bells – such a sweet way to mark the bride’s and groom’s chairs! We got ours from Create for Less.

Courtney arranged all of our mid-summer flowers, using blooms from wholesaler Fifty Flowers, local Richmond source Belona Botanical Farm, and Whole Foods!

One thing I can tell you: After a hard day’s work in the sun, even the intense heat didn’t zap our appetites! Luckily Gay from A Pimento Catering was on hand, and she let us sample a few of her goodies, including mini fried green tomatoes!

As always, things ended on a sweet note with a modern masterpiece by Maggie Austin. She based the design off the invitation suite! On a behind the scenes note, we generally don’t like to photograph cakes being held by people, because, well, it’s not like any of you would hire a person to hold your cake for the duration of your reception, but we simply ran out of time on this shoot! Putting a bridesmaid to work for a few minutes was quicker than setting up another table display :)

Two little parting favors: Gold bells to be rung as the newlyweds departed, and petite jars of pickled vegetables!

Be sure to pick up your copy of V5 to read more details!

Giveaway :: The Emily Ley Simplified Wedding Planner

November 27, 2012 by Nicole in Contests,Main | 134 comments

When I received my Emily Ley Simplified Planner in the mail not too long after my sister got engaged this summer, I fell in love with the gold corners and the luxurious linen cover and then promptly scheduled a time after work to organize it — dating the pages and deciding what to label the dividers. (Which is, in all seriousness, my idea of fun.) Then I realized, my sister would really appreciate this planner. Maybe even (dare I say?) more than I would. It is, after all, one of the most challenging organizational efforts to plan a wedding, work a full time job and in her case, act as mommy to a pug and schedule time to see her fiance who currently lives in another state. I selflessly surrendered the planner to her as my first act of maid of honor.

Of course, as she tends to do, Emily Ley read the minds of me, my sister and the multiple others who had been waiting for the Simplified Planner for months and created a Simplified Planner dedicated to women who are now happily engaged (and balancing work, friends and family).

It’s full of everything you could want in a planner, but it’s also an important wedding planning tool, full of the documents you need to get the logistics on paper and out of your brainspace. With monthly calendar pages, dividers, sheet protectors for inspiration gathering, contact pages for guests and vendors, a wedding checklist, a budget tracker, a vows worksheet and a seating arrangement worksheet, the Simplified Planner practically plans your wedding for you!

To Enter: There are three ways!
1. Leave a comment below telling us which part of wedding planning you’re most looking forward to.
2. Tweet “I just entered the @EmilyLey Simplified Wedding Planner giveaway on @iloveswmag!” Then, come back here and leave a SEPARATE comment telling us you did so.
3. Like Emily Ley and Southern Weddings on Facebook. Then leave a SEPARATE comment below telling us you did!

Win: The Emily Ley Simplified Wedding Planner!

This giveaway ends December 5 at midnight. Good Luck!!

P.S. The 12 Days of Southern Wedding Christmas is BACK, y’all! Keep an eye out for the giveaway goodness in December!

Lauren Stefanski, December 1, 2012 11:14 am   reply I've been an intern for three wedding companies-- totaling about 2.5 years now. I'm finally getting to plan my first wedding on my own and I think it would be a great gift to give to my first bride. PLUS I think it would help calm my nerves to have everything so perfectly organized for her! (I tweeted and "Liked" both pages!) Thanks girls! PS... I LOVE LOVE LOVE my V5- My boyfriend and I had been looking for it since the 13th. Literally every night after work we would drive to Publix, Walmart, Walgreens, Barnes and Noble, Harris Teeter, and Target. (Thank goodness they're all within 10 minutes of each other!!) And for a whole week we had no luck. I just figured it wasn't coming to my area so I was going to order online. I was having a horrible day at work and suddenly got a phone call from my boyfriend saying to come out to the parking lot... I knew he was going for a bike ride in the area so I figured he wanted to just say hi. He rode over a copy of V5 -- he called Barnes and Noble (who didn't have it yet) and then called Target. There was only one copy left there so he had the guy hold it for him... He was pretty embarrassed when he went to pick it up. I must say I had to put it in my car to resist myself from peeking at it during work! Long story short-- it was well worth the wait and now Brandon is hooked on the mag too!

Luzdary Leest, December 2, 2012 10:58 am   reply Our wedding day is in June 2013 in Aruba. I am originally from this island and most of our guests have never been here. I look forward to planning not only the wedding but also all activities where both sides of the family and friends will have an amazing time!

avatar
123

Lauren Stefanski, December 2, 2012 4:11 pm   reply I'm most excited about planning my first wedding after being an intern with three different companies! I think it'd be a great gift to give my first bride to calm both our nerves! But I can't wait to help pick her theme/ color pallette and stationary! Ps. Loving v5-- my bf searched stores with me for a week before we could find it! He stopped by my work on his bike to deliver it to me in front of my all women office! He's truely the best!

Southern Weddings V5: Love in Bloom

November 26, 2012 by Emily in Inspirations,Main | 18 comments

You know how in the Sweet Tea Society we say that we believe beautiful things have value simply because they make the world a more lovely place? Well, this next V5 editorial is the perfect example of that — it’s just so lovely. Easton Events deserves major kudos for pulling the details together; Eric Kelley photographed everything to perfection. Spring in the South? It doesn’t get much more beautiful than that, friends.

And how beautiful is Charleston?? No wonder it’s such a popular place to vacation and get married.

Sideshow Press designed and printed these gorgeous invitations, with calligraphy by If So Inklined. I think the modern vintage envelope liner is my favorite part!

The flowers throughout this shoot blow me away. Springtime in the South offers plenty of gorgeous blooms, to be sure, but the combinations the gals at Southern Blooms by Pat’s Floral Designs came up with take them to another level! All the lilac must have smelled heavenly.

Oh hi, gorgeous bride. Lora Kelley did an impeccable job on the makeup, while Wedding Hair by Charlotte rocked the updos. If I had to guess, I’d say this romantic, classic, natural look is exactly what most Southern brides hope to look like on their wedding days!

Gals down South know that even planning a spring wedding doesn’t guarantee comfortable temps, so we love this popsicle escort card idea! I’d set up the ice tubs at the back of the ceremony space so guests could grab their pops for a refreshing treat on the walk to the reception!

Hand-painted napkins! Also, I seriously adore these creative table numbers — one of my favorite details in the issue, actually. Just stencil on a number with white paint, or use a sticker, and encourage a lucky guest from each table to take home the jar of preserves at the end of the evening!

We were lucky enough to have some fabulous Peter Callahan mini food flown down especially for this shoot! Y’all know I love anything mini, and Peter is the king of that realm!

Dessert measured up, as well, with a towering crepe cake from the Charleston Crepe Company and mini berry pies.

The only way to end this gorgeous affair at Lowndes Grove? A classic getaway car and a fancy picnic basket packed with to-go nibbles for the road.

Be sure to pick up your copy of V5 to see all the details! You can find your copy in stores across the Southeast, or pick one up right here. AND, in celebration of Cyber Monday, we’re offering FREE SHIPPING on boxes of ten magazines! See all the details here!
