Happy Fourth of July, ladies + gents! We hope you’re celebrating with your families, eating barbecue (whether you like it Memphis style, Western North Carolina style, or Eastern North Carolina style, like me!), diving into some red velvet cake and heading out for fireworks this evening. We’ll see you back here tomorrow with our regular posts, but in the meantime, lots of love from the SW crew!

I was so inspired by the bright bridesmaid dresses in our real wedding post from a few weeks back that I decided to craft an inspiration board around them. Though this palette isn’t for the faint of heart, with a heavy dose of sophisticated neutrals, it could be quite perfect for the vibrant Southern gal (and her beau). I’m imagining just the faintest touch of tea party elements, paired with more modern touches like an ombre cake, to set the scene. What do you think – would you go for a palette this bold?

Welcome back to our current “Sit a Spell” series, where we Southern Weddings gals have been taking turns designing bridal showers for each other! Currently, only Miss Emily is engaged, but I am leaning toward throwing this shower anyway!

After a brief hiatus, I’m back with the final post in our Sit a Spell: Dream Bridal Showers series! As you may know, our dear sweet Nicole loves the colors orange. So against my ‘Bama judgement, I am putting my dislike for anything Auburn or Tennessee-ish and imagining a bright, and completely orange, citrus soiree for my girl.

Imagine, if you will, a slow Southern Saturday afternoon filled with best friends chatting, peach mojitos (um, yes please!), and of course a fabulous desert bar! I’d set the stage by sending out adorable letterpress and polka dot invitations from The Lettered Olive (2) to all of Nicole’s friends. Then, when the girls arrive, they’d be greeted with a cool drink (4) and the sweet smell of fresh citrus on the lush lawn of a fabulous home. I might arrange for this home to back up to a lake or the ocean – this is, after all, a dream shower!

We’d spend the afternoon gushing over how Nicole will be going on a month-long European adventure with her beau and playing cornhole (on custom orange monogram boards, of course!). I’d also love to have some kind of DIY craft project, like stenciling individual monograms onto colorful totes (5). Totally doable, right? Anyone else want to make this shower a reality ASAP? I sure do!

<p style="box-shadow: 0 0 10px #E8E8E8;height: auto;margin: 15px 5px 15px -5px; overflow: hidden; padding: 10px; class="images-collage">

I’d also love to gift these ridiculously adorable J. Crew ladybug earrings to bring Nicole good luck with her marriage! And, I might be known for going over board, so I was thinking of throwing in a baby pug for all the party-goers, a la Bridesmaids! Nicole, you’d be fine with this, right?

Confession: I actually made this inspiration board a few months ago, but decided to wait to post it until it really felt like summer out. We’re not quite there yet in North Carolina, but I couldn’t wait any longer! This board (and wedding!) was inspired by the crab boil photo and all its delicious reds, yellows, and oranges. Rent some wood plank tables, mix together some fiery wildflowers, and hire a bluegrass band – done and done! Well, almost :)

Ever since we announced our first ever Pinterest contest, I know y’all have been eagerly awaiting an update! I am so excited to say we’ve chosen our three finalists from the 50+ entries (y’all made it hard!), and now we’re ready to vote! If you recall, we’re doing something a little bit different for the prizes this time around: the Southern Weddings ladies worked with three different vendors to choose a prize that corresponded to each finalist’s board, but only the finalist with the most votes will receive their hand-selected prize. Make sense?

Here are the nominees!

One of the most beautiful signs of spring in the upper South is the blooming cherry blossoms in Washington, DC and Virginia. We heard from our DC photographer friend Abby Jiu that the mild winter has caused the peak bloom date to move forward (to March 20-23), so gals planning engagement sessions around the blossoms, take note! Whether or not you’re in the Capitol to see the blooms, we hope you’ll love this positively springy inspiration board.

I love all the patterns going on here it certainly makes for a lively look, doesn’t it? Using gingham linens at your reception while more expensive than plain white ones, to be sure would make such an impact that not much other decor would be needed. La Tavola Linen has two great blue gingham linens here and here. I also love the idea of using farmer’s market baskets of fresh blueberries in place of floral centerpieces. We did this at my sister’s wedding, and guests loved it!

As the last editor to share my dream Southern wedding, I’ve had a lot of time to think about exactly what kind of wedding I want (in my dreams, of course). I’ve been perusing the Southern Weddings Pinterest nonstop trying to find the perfect Southern inspiration for my own big day, and do you know what I’ve discovered? I truly and honestly believe that I have had an inspiration overload! There are so many fabulously Southern ideas out there, and I just want to incorporate them all into my dream wedding. What’s a Southern Weddings editor to do?

Step back and take a good long look at all of the images I had collected, that’s what. Were there any recurring themes popping up? Why, yes! The majority of the photos came from sunny daytime weddings, there were an awful lot of deep blues and spring green color schemes weaving their way through my inspiration folder, and oh, I have a major love affair with rustic barn weddings. Without further ado, I am happy to share with you my very own dream Southern wedding:

<p style="box-shadow: 0 0 10px #E8E8E8;height: auto;margin: 15px 5px 15px -5px; overflow: hidden; padding: 10px; class="images-collage">

Tell us the basics. Where do you want to get married and when? How many people would you invite? The more the merrier! If money were no issue (and this is a dream wedding, right?), I would invite upwards of 200 guests and make it a real party. I would love to get married right here in the Ol’ North State in the early fall.

What’s your design inspiration and color palette? One of the main focuses of my design inspiration is the lighting. Nothing adds to a space like a hanging chandelier or a canopy of swinging lights over a dance floor. I also incorporated a lot of classic white details–the white bouquets and white cakes–which look so clean and fresh against the rustic barn backdrop.

What details and traditions would you include in your ceremony? I want to pay homage to my family’s Southern heritage by including many traditions based around family. I am looking forward to my strong, supportive dad walking me down the aisle. I want my Mom, a former makeup artist, and my aunt, a hairdresser, to gussy me up for my walk down the aisle. I am excited to shower my bridesmaids with monogrammed gifts to show how appreciative I am to have them in my life. I can’t wait to surprise my hubby-to-be with a fun groom’s cake. Most of all, I want to incorporate as many details that have significance to my husband and myself. I want my wedding to be a celebration of the memories that we have shared.

What dress would you wear? I have fallen head over heels for Monique Lhuillier’s Scarlet. The lace detailing is classic, while the open back gives it a modern edge. I’m still on the look-out for a getaway dress. I’m thinking short and sleek. Any suggestions?

<p style="box-shadow: 0 0 10px #E8E8E8;height: auto;margin: 15px 5px 15px -5px; overflow: hidden; padding: 10px; class="images-collage">

Image credits, clockwise from top left: lace dress photo by Paul Johnson, white bouquet from Martha Stewart Weddings, striped bouquet wrap from Brides.com, navy bridesmaid dresses photo by Stephen Devries via Southern Weddings

What would your flowers look like? I love all white bouquets, full of ranunculus and big white hydrangeas. At the reception, I imagine low white and green arrangements decking each table.

What details and traditions would you include in your reception? Again, string lights and warm chandeliers are a must! In addition, I want a large live band that will really get the guests grooving. My goal is to have every man, woman and child on the dance floor having the time of their lives!

What food would you serve? Oh Lordy, I’m already excited about the food at my future wedding! Southerners sure do like their food! I adore all mini foods, so there would be an assortment of barbecue sliders and homemade macaroni served in white ramekins. The dessert spread would ideally stretch out for miles. In addition to the classic white cake, I’d love to see lots of cupcakes, banana pudding (a Southern favorite), and delicious creme brulee!

Where would you honeymoon? My hubby and I would explore Europe. I’m particularly keen on going skiing in the Swiss Alps!

What’s most important to you about weddings? Love is tangible at a wedding. Family and friends come together to celebrate a couple’s love. Weddings are about creating memories and sharing traditions. I love the feeling of community that surrounds weddings and I hope that my own wedding is full of wonderful memories and my friends, my family and my new husband and I will always cherish.

(Marissa wasn’t lying about those exclamation marks in her emails to Emily!) Mardi Gras is no exception, and if you can imagine it, makes us even more giddy for weddings inspired by the event. That’s why this morning, Emily put together a softer twist on the traditional Mardi Gras colors with her inspiration board and Marissa gathered a ton of fun images to teach us about all the Mardi Gras traditions.

I’ve pulled together some of my favorite green, purple and gold finds to get those Mardi Gras wheels turning. Sparkly and sophisticated is the way to go for these Southern-inspired products. Just throw in a some masks and feathers and find a brass band to provide the tunes you’ll be all set.

<p style="box-shadow: 0 0 10px #E8E8E8;height: auto;margin: 15px 5px 15px -5px; overflow: hidden; padding: 10px; class="images-collage">

<p style="box-shadow: 0 0 10px #E8E8E8;height: auto;margin: 15px 5px 15px -5px; overflow: hidden; padding: 10px; class="images-collage">

A. Put something sparkly to jingle-jangle on your arms! You know you’ll be waving your hands in celebration! I love this amethyst bracelet paired with some other gold bangles.

B. Who else loves this dress like I do? Flirty in gorgeous shade of purple I think it’s lovely for your bridesmaids! Of course, I won’t blame you if you decide to rock it at the rehearsal dinner. We like this sparkly number, too.

C. So you want to don something a little more sophisticated than those shiny plastic beads? How about this stunner: the Trompe L’oeil necklace from J.Crew. J’adore!

D. There’s never been a better time to break out the feathered accessories than during Mardi Gras! I love this delicate hairpiece from Twigs and Honey.

E. This beauty’s definitely a splurge! But it’s glittering exterior and easy-to-hold size makes it a contender for our hearts. Bonus? It’s called the Bountiful Bliss clutch! Perfect for a wedding, no?

F. We know that with the abundance of King’s Cake and sweets at your celebration, there will be many opportunities to use these cute dessert flags.

G. Oh y’all. How sweet are these bow-adorned purple pumps? We think they’ll look smashing with a short getaway dress, too! We’re crazy for this option by Nina, too.

H. Confetti and sparkles looks just as good on china as it does when it falls from the sky. We like these from Kate Spade.

I. These purple, green and gold macarons will be a hit! French treat with some colorful charm can’t go wrong on your dessert bar. Pair them with King’s Cake for a true NOLA feast!

J. Turn a Southern favorite into a themed refreshment! This blackberry mint julep recipe has us licking our lips! Want another option? We love that this cocktail is named the French Quarter!

K. One of my favorite things to see in a wedding is a set of gold Chiavari chairs. We think it’s a great way to incorporate some of that gold into the scenery without overwhelming the eyes. You can rent them from companies like Classic Party Rentals.

L. Don’t forget the small details! A bright green cake server that’s not too delicate won’t just look festive on your cake table, it’ll bring back fun memories when you reuse it around the house.

M. With all the feasting that’s to be done, you’ll need to give guests a play-by-play. This swirling green menu from Minted will fit in splendidly!

What do you think of our picks? What items would you include in a Mardi Gras wedding?

With Mardi Gras festivities gearing up in Southern locales like New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama, we figured it was the perfect time to bring y’all some fabulous Carnival inspiration! As I’m sure y’all know, Mardi Gras is one of the biggest cultural celebrations in the South. Though Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, is typically host to the biggest parties and feasting, the Carnival celebrations stretch all the way from Epiphany to the beginning of Lent. That’s a lot of King Cake, y’all! To celebrate, we’re taking the day to offer up three posts chock-full of Mardi Gras hootenanny. Yes, hootenanny.

I’m up first, and I’ve got an inspiration board to share with you! I wanted to do offer a softer twist on the traditional purple, green, and gold color scheme while still reflecting the fun and celebration of Mardi Gras.

<p style="box-shadow: 0 0 10px #E8E8E8;height: auto;margin: 15px 5px 15px -5px; overflow: hidden; padding: 10px; class="images-collage">

The Details:

Dress your ‘maids in shades of shiny plum and mulberry for a dazzling effect (photo by Elizabeth Messina). A gorgeous feather fascinator picks up on the notes of Mardi Gras costumes without going overboard (photo by Veil and Bow via Southern Weddings).

The Blackberry Smash, with its purple hue and pop of green mint, would make a perfectly color-coordinated signature drink! (Photo by Andrew Purcell via Design*Sponge) We love this cascading centerpiece by Flowers by Fancy (photo by Kate Preftakes). The gold beads adorning the back of this chair remind you a bit of really classy Mardi Gras beads, don’t they? (Photo by Aaron Delesie via Once Wed.)

A classic carriage is the perfect transport to or getaway from your ceremony (photo by Bryan Johnson). Last but not least, no Mardi Gras inspired wedding would be complete without a King Cake. We love this one from our friends at Sucre.

Check back in later today, as Marissa will be sharing Mardi Gras traditions and inspiration from real weddings, and Nicole will be rounding up some French Quarter finds!

Friends, have you ever lost your umbrella? I lost both of mine a couple of weeks ago and ever since, my days have been spent constantly checking the weather on my phone or running from rain clouds. The skies have been a bit gloomy in the Carolinas lately, so I finally resigned to the fact that I wasn’t going to find my umbrella and got a new one yesterday. Let’s hope that Emily’s lemon squeeze inspiration board paired with my color palette finds puts Mother Nature in a better mood for tomorrow. Be prepared for sunshine, y’all!

I love how these yellow and green picks play off the colors of citrus groves throughout the South! These items will add some Southern sunshine to any wedding. Want more finds? Stay tuned because later today, Marissa is sharing her favorite yellow dress picks in her Southern Style column!

<p style="box-shadow: 0 0 10px #E8E8E8;height: auto;margin: 15px 5px 15px -5px; overflow: hidden; padding: 10px; class="images-collage">

A. We love the idea of using chalkboards to identify signature drinks and menu items, especially when it comes in a bright frame like this one!

B. I am gaga for this ribbon. I see it wrapped around a lush bouquet or tied in the flower girl’s hair. What do you think it’s perfect for?

C. Balance out the sour of those lemons with some sweet rock candy. We think these would look adorable on a candy buffet!

D. We just love the idea of using mini citrus trees as part of the decor! You can buy meyer lemon trees and more online here.

E. No need to get too fancy with drinks, this lemon prosecco is tasty and only needs three ingredients (four if you count the mint garnish).

F. We know a Southern girl never skimps her guests on sweets or on cute presentation. Try these pleated cupcake liners if you’re baking for the wedding yourself!

G. Guests will have a ball guessing what’s inside these bright striped treat bags. Another option? Let guests fill the bags themselves with treats from the dessert bar. Provide custom stickers to keep goodies from falling out.

H. For tying treats, invitations, napkins and more, this “Lemondrop” twine is a go-to. We’ll never tire of seeing it!

I. For your bridesmaids who need a place for their lipstick and camera, this yellow cornflower clutch is the perfect summery accessory.

J. Draw eyes upward with an epic yellow chandelier. Whether it’s hanging over a lounge area or the dance floor, it’s sure to make a statement.

K. Can’t you picture these adorable lemon souffles sitting at each place setting during dessert? I love how they’re presented in the lemon rind!

L. Complete your outfit by accessorizing with this adorable green “Rana” cocktail ring in mint.

M. For a little snack before the nuptials, pack up lemonade, some fruit and cheese and crackers in a picnic basket for two. Or, fill it with some late night snacks to take with you after the reception!

N. For changing into when heels are too painful for the dance floor or for gifting to your ‘maids, these bright cap-toe flats are comfy but cute enough to don all night!

Did these picks bring some sunshine to your life? What other details would you include in a citrus-inspired wedding?

The other day, my sister pinned DIY instructions on how to build your own farm table. I immediate repinned it! Y’all know I love big, heavy farm tables. There’s so much character in the wood grain, the little nicks and often, the back story. The best farm tables are built from hand and passed down through the generations.

I love that for Camille + Mark (here and here), who hosted an intimate gathering of only 19 guests, many of our favorite components were built just for them (no rentals here! Those three farm tables were specially made) or come straight from their homes.

For the same reason, I love that some of the finds we rounded up below are ways to personalize an already beautiful wedding. I hope you enjoy!

<p style="box-shadow: 0 0 10px #E8E8E8;height: auto;margin: 15px 5px 15px -5px; overflow: hidden; padding: 10px; class="images-collage">

A. A hot pink dress will look marvelous against a streamer-decked ceremony arch. We love this one from BCBG.

B. Remember the little flags from Camille + Mark’s dessert table? Easily make your own by combining a few inches of Cute Tape with skewers. Use the leftover tape for favors bags and the like.

C. From tying invitations to hanging chair back signs, twine is always versatile. We love the raw look it has while still dressing up pretty paper details. Combine it with some scalloped kraft tags for even more fun.

D. We love the idea of a ring bearer bowl that you can customize with a sweet saying. Find one at Paloma’s Nest.

E. Y’all saw how much I raved about Camille + Mark’s invitations! One of my favorite parts was the custom handkerchiefs included. We love the options provided by Benign Objects. Perfect for catching tears of joy.

F. Xoelle bow ties are a favorite of ours. The colors in this little number would adorable on a ring bearer.

G. The curtain of ribbons at Camille + Mark’s ceremony was epic and beautiful. You could use multiple spools of ribbon like these from Joann’s or you could do what C + M did and buy a few yards of fabric. Tear the fabric instead of cutting to get a raw edge.

H. I love the meaning behind Camille + Mark’s unity sand ceremony. Use mini apothecary bottles with a cork top to keep the sands separate until the ceremony. You can find them on sites like Save on Crafts and Amazon.com. We got these here.

I. For an added vintage flair, a pop of color and to make those treats look even sweeter, use a bright cake stand.

J. A can of gold spray paint can go a long way! We love the gold pomegranates that sat the the table settings. Achieve a similar look with just a few spritzes.

K. Colorful glass vases can make a table topped with flowers look even more full and fabulous. We love the options at Luna Bazaar.

L. Who else saw the lawn games at Camille + Mark’s wedding and had to have them? This bowling set from Pottery Barn is a great alternative if you can’t find a vintage alternative.

What are some ways you would personalize your wedding?

Take a look at past “Get the Look” features from V4:

If you fell in love with the look of Natalia + Levi’s wedding, I’m sure it was the delicate and romantic elements paired with rustic and Southern details that grabbed your attention. The couple was inspired by the idea of a Parisian flea market meeting a Southern cotton plantation and the end result was a beautiful Georgia wedding with tons of inspiration to draw. Check out their wedding here and here and read on to see how you can achieve the same look!

<p style="box-shadow: 0 0 10px #E8E8E8;height: auto;margin: 15px 5px 15px -5px; overflow: hidden; padding: 10px; class="images-collage">

<p style="box-shadow: 0 0 10px #E8E8E8;height: auto;margin: 15px 5px 15px -5px; overflow: hidden; padding: 10px; class="images-collage">

A. We loved how Natalia’s bridesmaids were able to incorporate some glitz and glam into their dresses. We love this Modcloth frock for the same reasons a neutral color becomes a hit with some metallic thread.

B. Natalia’s updo was topped off with a clay anemone hair pin. We love its slight pink tone and delicate look.

C. Set the romantic tone with pretty pink invitations. We love how the Lettered Olive makes some of the collections ready to order.

D. Signature cocktails just look sweeter in mason jars, don’t they? You can find handled versions on sites like Amazon.com

E. Put a little pep in your step! We love these blush shoes with its chiffon petals.

F. For another romantic touch, try having a calligrapher write your table numbers on vintage china. We found this plate on Etsy, but you can also search local flea markets and antique stores.

G. Grab a cotton boll and tie it up sweetly nestled in with these blue napkins. The table is set and Southern!

H. The gorgeous moss monogram hanging from the fence at N + L’s ceremony was one of my favorite details. You can have your florist make one for you, buy one (we like these from Pottery Barn), or make your own with this DIY!

I. The pitcher at Natalia + Levi’s altar pulled our heart strings! We love this one from Anthropologie. Put it on display, stick sparklers in it, or fill it with flowers. Any way you do it, we’ll probably still love it.

J. The table runners Natalia + Levi used at their reception exuded Southern charm. They screen printed some of them. Others were made from lace doilies. Check out this DIY to easily make your own.

K. Make your altar feel like a cozy home to say your vows in! Some rugs can get expensive, so we suggest scouring flea markets and online sites for a good deal especially if you’re using it outside. We found this rug on Overstock.com

L. The shabby chic frames used in Natalia + Levi’s wedding were used as chalkboards. We love how a pretty item can become practical! You can buy a frame and paint over the glass with chalkboard paint, or you can buy them already made.

What do you think of our picks? Would you try this look?

A bright and shining winter beach wedding like Emily envisioned was just the ticket to start off the New Year! I love the idea of pairing glitzy items like gold foil cards and metallic jewelry with organic material like linen and kraft to play off the beach tones and sparkly waters. If you’re picturing a relaxed but elegant beach wedding brightened up with dozens of tea lights after dark, then these picks are for you!

<p style="box-shadow: 0 0 10px #E8E8E8;height: auto;margin: 15px 5px 15px -5px; overflow: hidden; padding: 10px; class="images-collage">

<p style="box-shadow: 0 0 10px #E8E8E8;height: auto;margin: 15px 5px 15px -5px; overflow: hidden; padding: 10px; class="images-collage">

A. Bright winter wedding loveliness doesn’t have to stop at “I do.” Bring the style into your home with this striped bedding.

B. Send guests off with a little goodie! Pack them in these kraft bags, slap a custom sticker or stamp on the front and you have an adorable thank you present!

C. Just like blue skies make your heart happy, this blue bow tie will make your beau look positively dapper.

D. Whether you’re donning it for the rehearsal dinner or dressing your ‘maids, this one-shoulder frock is affordable and just darling.

E. Make your wrists sparkly and bright with this gold chain bracelet.

F. A thank you note goes even further when it’s gold foil and striped!

G. We’re a huge fan of sparkly heels in the office, but you don’t want to sink in the sand in them! Try these adorable flats, instead.

H. Give the beach coolness a touch of warmth. We’re always fans of clusters of votives, especially when they’re as pretty as these mercury glass ones.

I. Beach weddings also mean beach lounging right? Make things a little more formal with a wooden bench but be sure to keep some throws nearby in case the winter beach breeze comes through, especially at night.

J. We love this natural canvas tote with it’s leather handles. Stuff it with gift for your bridesmaids or with a change of clothes for post-wedding beach frolicking!

K. These alphabet trays mimic the colors of the ocean. Keep them handy on your dressing table for trinkets and small jewelry.

L. We love a little sparkle in unexpected places. Wrap up invitations, programs or favors with this white and gold twine.

Did you plan a winter beach wedding? What items do you think are must-haves?

Now that Emily has started us off with some winter wedding inspiration and Marissa has given us the run-down of practical but pretty Southern style, I’ve rounded up some finds to turn these ideas into a reality.

Madi said she envisioned a Southern barn wedding with “mason jars, cowboy boots, great food and beautiful floral arrangements.” Though a summer wedding may not be in the cards, there’s still a way to incorporate all of those elements! Southern hospitality never fails, even when the weather is unforgiving. Play up the rustic details, which are as beautiful as ever in the winter and keep your guests’ best interests in mind by providing a warm atmosphere (candles and string lights are a favorite in my book) and comfy details like blankets and warm drinks. They’ll feel right at home and ready to celebrate!

<p style="box-shadow: 0 0 10px #E8E8E8;height: auto;margin: 15px 5px 15px -5px; overflow: hidden; padding: 10px; class="images-collage">

<p style="box-shadow: 0 0 10px #E8E8E8;height: auto;margin: 15px 5px 15px -5px; overflow: hidden; padding: 10px; class="images-collage">

A. Warmth is a priority when you’re wearing a dress! Keep a (faux) fur stole, jacket or wrap close by. If fur isn’t your style, try a warm wool cardigan or a sleek white blazer.

B. Want some jewelry that looks lovely in winter weather without reminding you of sparkly (and cold!) snow? How about these pearl Kate Spade earrings?

C. Keep makeup essentials and a hanky handy in this geometric clutch from Oatmeal Lace. Bonus? It’s just casual enough to be used after the wedding!

D. Dress up those comfy cowboy boots with some warm lace mohair socks! The little side buttons are adorable!

E. Crocheted netted wrist gloves will keep your fingers warm without being bulky. We love this pair from BHLDN. Want something a little warmer? We love these, too.

F. Cotton bolls will last even in the dead of winter. Tie name tags to a boll for Southern escort cards (see our Fab Finds in V4!), or put a few in a mason jar for a centerpiece.

G. I love the warmth of glowing string lights. The view of your reception area flooded with yellow light will immediately let your guests know where the party’s at!

H. Keep the small details rustic, too. These monogrammed cuff links will surely look dapper on your sweetie’s sleeve.

I. Warm pie and goodies from the dessert bar will look scrumptious on these silhouette dessert plates!

J. Nothing beats warming your hands by the fire. A round fire pit in your lounge area gives guests the opportunity to get some fresh air while staying warm.

K. Dressing up your table without the cost of out-of-season flowers is easy. These Epsom salt candles pick up the winter theme. Place them in mason jars for an added Southern flair.

L. S’mores are great favors for winter weddings, and guests can break into their supplies while they sit around the fire pit. You can put these together easily by placing a few graham crackers, chocolate pieces and marshmallows in a cellophane bag. We love packaging them inside muslin bags (we use this source and Amazon.com) that you can stamp with a custom message.

Happy Thursday, friends! Today we have a fun little three-part series for you. We often get emails from readers with various questions and queries, and though we don’t have time to post about every one individually, we try to when we can. Reader Madi emailed us a few weeks ago, and this is what she said:

“I am a student at Texas Christian University, and I am a huge fan of Southern Weddings Magazine! Just two weeks ago, the sweet love of my life proposed, and since then I’ve been like a giddy girl as we’ve been exploring and contemplating the many options that come with planning our “big day.” Though I grew up in Kansas City, I’ve always been a Southern girl at heart, and even hurried South as soon as I could! I always thought I’d be married in the summertime, but our timing of things is looking more like a celebration in the winter, which could mean cold weather and possible snow fall! I always envisioned a ceremony outside of a barn and a reception with mason jars, cowboy boots, great food and beautiful floral arrangements… but winter timing may tweak all of that a bit. Is there any possible way y’all would share some ideas or do some sort of feature on how to pull off a traditional Southern wedding in a colder climate or even during the winter months? I’m looking for the warmth of Southern hospitality to surround us on that day.”

We loved the idea of dreaming up Southern ideas for a winter wedding, so today, we’re posting a three-part series for Madi. Up first is my inspiration board, then Marissa will be posting about winter fashion, and lastly Nicole will round us out with some Southern winter finds and DIY projects. If you have a brilliant winter wedding idea of your own, we’d love for you to chime in in the comments!

<p style="box-shadow: 0 0 10px #E8E8E8;height: auto;margin: 15px 5px 15px -5px; overflow: hidden; padding: 10px; class="images-collage">

There’s absolutely no reason why traditional Southern style can’t be translated to the colder months, and I hope this board shows that. In fact, some Southern staples – raw cotton in particular – are more than perfect for winter. Use the fluffy bolls in bouquets, boutonnieres, and centerpieces for a lush winter look.

Madi wants to get married in a barn, which is also totally doable in the winter. Just make sure to rent heaters, as older barns can be pretty drafty!

For tablescapes, I love the idea of substituting flowers (which would be pricy, and probably not all that pretty) with low clusters of cotton in vintage silver containers surrounded by white and ivory pillar candles (probably in hurricanes, if we’re talking about a barn!). A tone-on-tone dotted linen or runner would complete the scape.

Throughout the day, concentrate on layering texture – cotton, wood, nubbly linen, luxe chiffon – over a pretty neutral palette of white, ivory, and barnwood gray.

Though Emily’s Southern Gothic inspiration board was made in honor of Halloween, its dark and muted color palette and slightly eerie quality are the perfect inspiration for adding a bit of drama to the everyday. I couldn’t get the image of old plantation homes and Spanish moss out of my mind as I hunted down these color palette finds. Each reminds me of Edgar Allen Poe and William Faulkner in its own way and has made me love the South even more for it’s dark corners and history.

<p style="box-shadow: 0 0 10px #E8E8E8;height: auto;margin: 15px 5px 15px -5px; overflow: hidden; padding: 10px; class="images-collage">

A. Correspondence looks lovely with the addition of a custom wax seal and builds suspense for the receiver who can’t wait to see what’s inside.

B. Familiar patterns in luxurious colors and textures, like this pillow, remind me of antique settees found in a plantation house’s sitting room.

C. Rustic bird napkin rings will make you want to picnic outside under the Spanish moss.

D. I can’t get over how this BHLDN dress magically combines a dreamy texture with a design that’s reminiscent of the eerie old South.

E. Even a dark stone can brighten up your finger with paired with sterling silver and pave diamonds.

F. Wouldn’t these booties be darling paired with a cape and your handsome fiance? I see engagement session potential!

G. Set your table with some drama. Forgo the china for your housewarming and use these black and gold dinner plates instead.
H. A spindly hall tree makes it easy for you to be hostess in your new place.

I. Like the best decor in old Southern homes, this rug acts as a lush covering for creaky floor boards.
We’d love to bond a little more, so over the next few weeks, each of us will be giving you a look into our dream wedding — what our inspiration is, what we’d want to wear, and the great Southern traditions we’d love to include. Next up? Sierra’s Southern wedding!

It’s started: My friends are already asking me what type of wedding I want to have. And man, that is a good question! I feel like working for a wedding magazine and blog, you start to like many different things things you would never have considered before. You’re exposed to so much that you could really go in a few different directions for your own wedding. Oh yes, and those friends? They’ve also begun teasing that they’re not inviting me to their weddings because they won’t be as nice as those featured on SW (I’m sure they’re only joking about the invite!)

When putting together these boards, I told Emily that I wish I could wait until after the V4 real wedding posts went out on the blog, because they were ALL I could think about for my inspiration! (I particularly loved Katie + Max, Camille + Mark and Jodi + Kurt’s!).

Now I just need to find a dapper Southern gentleman! Any suggestions?

<p style="box-shadow: 0 0 10px #E8E8E8;height: auto;margin: 15px 5px 15px -5px; overflow: hidden; padding: 10px; class="images-collage">

<p style="box-shadow: 0 0 10px #E8E8E8;height: auto;margin: 15px 5px 15px -5px; overflow: hidden; padding: 10px; class="images-collage">

Tell us the basics. Where do you want to get married and when? How many people would you invite? I would like to get married near the beach but not on the beach (that way, family and friends could head over and have some fun during the wedding weekend – no sunburns, please). Current possibilities are Charleston, Savannah or Wilmington. I would guess 100-150 people and in the spring or early summer.

What’s your design inspiration and color palette? I based my color palette off a combo I saw somewhere that included tan, a soft yellow, peach, coral and light blue. My dream wedding would be light, fun and crafty. In the office a year or so ago, we went around and defined what we thought each person’s wedding style would be for a branding exercise. The girls said they pictured something natural for me, and I agree. I don’t want anything too over the top.

What details and traditions would you include in your ceremony? Ideally, I would love for my wedding ceremony to be in a church or on the grounds of a plantation with a beautiful altar setup. The men would certainly be wearing bow ties. There would be a bluegrass band, Southern-inspired programs, and I just loved the monogrammed handkerchief idea in V4!

What dress would you wear? I am completely devastated that Priscilla of Boston is closing because I wanted to wear a Priscilla of Boston gown. They seem to be perfect for Southern brides not too crazy and very classic. Would it be absurd for me to buy one about three years in advance? Generally, I like dresses with a little bit of lace and/or beading, but with an overall elegant aesthetic. I don’t want to have a dress that wears me, you know?

What would your flowers look like? My current favorites include: gardenias, tree peonies, clematis, hellebores, tree peonies, tulips and billy balls. The bouquet could be something simple, like fluffy, white peonies or a yellow and pink combo like Jen Huang’s photo above. For the table setting, I would like colorful arrangements similar to those in Katie + Max or Camille + Mark’s wedding.

What details and traditions would you include in your reception? There would certainly be a live band and dancing. I love the custom bottle labels in V4′s Southern Meets Nantucket shoot by Trent Bailey. I would also include a fun groom’s cake!

What food would you serve? Like Marissa, I’m a big fan of Southern comfort food. There would be chicken, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, pinto beans and most importantly, a blackberry cobbler from the Dutch oven. I also loved the chicken and waffles from V4! We tried to put lots of Southern food into the issue.

Where would you honeymoon? We would honeymoon in the Caribbean, somewhere tropical and warm. I am literally envisioning scenes from The Bachelor. Does anyone else watch that show?! Emily and I are super fans.

What’s most important to you about weddings? The celebration of love. It’s possibly the only time in your life that you will have all of your friends and family together in one spot to just let loose and celebrate well, you!

What do you think, ladies?

Hey, y’all!

<p style="box-shadow: 0 0 10px #E8E8E8;height: auto;margin: 15px 5px 15px -5px; overflow: hidden; padding: 10px; class="images-collage">

Emily’s merlot + champagne vineyard inspiration board from last week had me really excited to pull some fun finds that correspond to the rich color palette. I was filled with visions of fall in the North Carolina vineyards, cozy sweaters and scarves, wood accents and, of course, popping open a nice bottle of wine. Whether you’re planning a vineyard wedding, traveling through wine country for your honeymoon or just in love with these colors, these picks will have you dreaming in merlot + champagne.

<p style="box-shadow: 0 0 10px #E8E8E8;height: auto;margin: 15px 5px 15px -5px; overflow: hidden; padding: 10px; class="images-collage">

A. The bold stripe of color in this China set will dress up any table and will look fabulous on display in your china cabinet.

B. Nothing makes me feel cozy the way a scarf does. I love this one from Madewell. With it’s rich colors and type, it’s reminiscent of rustic wine crates and cotton labels.

C. These bottles and wood stoppers bring some of the rustic elements of the vineyard to your bar and table. The best part is that they can be customized with a monogram!

D. I love the many used of these authentic wine crates. Guests can toss cards in them at the wedding and after, you can use them as containers or planters.

E. Finish off the ensemble with these beautiful suede boots from Tory Burch. With no heel and a rich chocolate-y color, they’re a wardrobe staple.

F. We know you’re the ever-prepared hostess. This vintage wood cheese board is just the ticket to making your guests feel welcome.

G. Jet off to your honeymoon in vineyard-inspired fashion. Kate Spade’s patent leather passport holder is both pretty and practical.

H. Show your family and friends how much you love them with some chocolate-dipped madeleines. We won’t tell if you get a few for yourself, too.

I. Keep track of your travels through wine country with these notebooks made from historical maps.

J. If our merlot and champagne colors don’t make you feel decadent, then this red wine chocolate cake recipe from Smitten Kitchen surely will.
We’re back with another inspiration board, and this one is actually a reader request! Christina asked to see ideas for a merlot, blush, and champagne vineyard wedding on our last inspiration board post, and I was happy to oblige! I think this combination is stunning and elegant, while still being relaxed and easy. And I love that the wine cork accents are subtle and sophisticated perfect for a grown-up vineyard wedding! I could see this event coming to life at Montaluce Winery in Georgia or Raffaldini in North Carolina… what do you think?
