Bridal Market 2012 Part 1: Romona, Claire, Christos, Kenneth

October 22, 2012 by Marissa in Fashion and Style,Main | 4 comments

Just 22 more days until V5 arrives! Y’all are going to love it!

Happy Monday, dear readers! Y’all are in for a treat to kick off your week! As you may know, last weekend, Kristin and I packed our chicest black flats and our fully charged iPhones and hit the Big Apple to preview some of our favorite designers’ newest collections. We saw way more lace than should be allowed in one weekend, and gushed over each and every piece of it! Join us as we share these beauties from behind the lens of our awesome photographer, Kat Harris!

We kicked off our Saturday morning with our first show, the Romona Keveza Collection! Even the venue (the St Regis Hotel) was glamorous! Inspired by the traveling tale of James Bond, the collection paid homage to the luxurious lifestyle that is Bond’s signature. We saw the classic Romona lace gowns, but we also were delighted to see lots and lots of color, from lime green to Romona red to classic navy. We even saw pink + peplum!

We then rushed to snag a cab and headed to Pier 94 for the Claire Pettibone show! We were greeted with gourmet cookies and fabulous swag bags filled with hand-painted goodness from our friend Kristy Rice.

Yes, I am holding my iPhone and Kristin is holding her iPad. We were all over that Insta/Tweet coverage for y’all! We didn’t want you to miss a thing!

The Claire Pettibone show always feels like I’ve been transported to another land. A glamorous land of flowers and lace! Claire’s show was effortless luxury mixed with sun drenched colors, and embroidered embellishments. One of the most striking parts of the collection was the incredibly intricate backs. Not only were the gowns gorgeous from the front, but the backs were equally, if not more, beautiful!

I’m so glad Kat was able to sneak backstage and snag a few behind-the-scene shots of the amazing hair at Christos! Talk about the Southern bump! These ladies took big Southern hair up a notch, and I couldn’t have loved it more!

Y’all, I have to tell you that the Christos Collection may have contained my and Kristin’s very favorite back of any dress at Market (the fourth one down in this post)! French lace, an embroidered keyhole back with a giant lace flower/bow — oh my stars!

We actually couldn’t help but swoon over this entire collection! It was filled with soft silhouettes with airy tulle layered with French Alencon lace. We also loved the sheer tops with petal appliqués transforming the strapless gown into a modest illusion neckline.

The Kenneth Pool Collection was up next, and it took quite a dramatic spin on classic gowns! We saw lots of glamour with this one! Form-fitting sheaths were met with exuberant volume with the KP fit and flair gowns. Rich satin took the place of demur lace and crystal beading made for a luxurious finish to each dress!

Woah! Imagine, that’s just a portion of all the fabulous gowns we saw on Saturday (I know, woe is me)! All images from our amazing photographer Kat Harris. Thanks so much, Kat!

Check back soon because this is just the beginning of all the gorgeousness you’re going to see this week. Now let’s play the favorite game — tell me your favorite gown from the post, or, if you can’t decide, choose one from each collection!

Emily, October 22, 2012 9:25 am   reply You know I'll play along! From Romona, I adored the v-neck, cap sleeve lace number. Claire, the one with streamers, and I also loved the back of the last one. I fell in love with the third dress in the Christos section, the one with the round open back, and for KP, I'm also going to go with the open back one!

Kristin, October 22, 2012 4:21 pm   reply Emily! I wish you could have seen those beautiful Christos gowns in person. The backs were simply breath-taking with all the detail!! Oh-my-goodness. I don't know how to pick a favorite but if I must I pick the keyhole ballgown with the box pleats from Kenneth Poole. It was stunning!

2

Madi Reid, October 22, 2012 10:10 pm   reply So many gorgeous gowns! I'd die to wear the lace overlay gown (4th row, column 2) in the selections from Romona Keveza! So pretty!!! And my, oh my! Those Southern Bumps! LOVE!

Madelynne Moulton, October 24, 2012 8:47 am   reply LOVE the Romona single strap gown and the DRAMA of dress row 3 of Kenneth, although I like almost all of those A LOT. EVERY single Christos one is amazing.

Bridal Market Preview!

Ahh! Just twenty five short days until V5! Y’all are going to flip!

Well hello, sweet readers! Kristin and I are back from quite the whirlwind trip to the Big Apple for Bridal Fashion Week, and boy do we have a lot to show you! We hope you enjoyed our Tweet/Insta coverage over the weekend, we sure loved sharing it with y’all!

While our amazing photographer, Kat Harris, works on the gorgeous images of fabulous gowns we thought it would be fun to do a little behind-the-scenes Instagram sneak peak! So grab yourself a cup of coffee and a bagel, and let’s head north to NYC!

Top to bottom and left to right: the fabulous New York skyline from our hotel window, Kristin and I snagging a cup of coffee before heading to our first show, we barely made it to the second show before changing into our flats (y’all, my Tieks were the perfect Market shoes – not a blister in site!), a little BTS of our hotel room during a late night work catch up session, our super sweet fruit gift from Miss Lara (thank you, L! We loved it!), after the shows we pulled on our yoga pants and tennis shoes and walked around the block for a bit of pizza to refuel! De-lish!, up and at ‘em for day two KNW and I donned our chicest black to weather the NYC chill, we stopped between shows for a little street style session with the super talented Kat Harris.

Top to bottom and left to right: Ridiculously gorgeous hand-painted run of show and iPhone cover by SW friend, Kristy Rice had us excited for the Claire Pettibone show, while going through our press packet for Romonoa Keveza we were thrilled to to see a little SW love, delicious snow cones at the Loverly Lounge – they’re even wedding cake flavored!.

One of the great things about Bridal Market is getting to see some of our favorite industry friends! Left to right and top to bottom: the amazing Summer Watkins from Grey Likes, the incredibly talented Kellee from Loverly, and former SW editor herself Miss Whitney Davis (you know what we say: once an SW girl, always an SW girl!).

And of course what you’ve been waiting for! Gorg-eous gowns, and lots of ‘em! We died over this hand beaded (in Birmingham, Alabama!) top from Southern girl Heidi Elnora, this subtle silver hue was the perfect something blue from JLM Couture, oh heavens, y’all – this bow from Heidi Elnora had our Southern hearts skipping a few beats, and this one-shoulder asymmetrical lace fit and flair was so major from Ines Di Santo.

I hope you enjoyed this little glimpse into our crazy weekend! Stay tuned because next week we’ll have lovely detail images from our fab photog Kat Harris. She even snuck backstage at a few shows to get some super fun BTS shots for y’all!

All images my iPhone, and with the help of sweet Kat!

Summer in the South: Men’s Summer Essentials from Well Groomed

August 28, 2012 by Marissa in Fashion and Style,Main | 4 comments

From the end of March until the middle of September, my life is taken over by the boys of summer! So when it comes to our Summer in the South series, we couldn’t leave out our handsome beaus.

Since we’re a girl’s club here at Southern Weddings, we’re turning to our friend and stylish blogger, Darren at Well Groomed, for his manly summer essentials. Take it away, Darren!

A. Try offsetting a classic navy button-down with unexpected soft red pants.

B. Too flustered to remember what to pack? This dopp kit’s illustrations make it a no-brainer.

C. Wedding planning? You’ll inevitably be dragged into some late-night, last-minute DIYs. This Baxter of California cream will keep your under eye bags and circles in check for the big day.

D. Bow ties are a must in the summer. Wear yours on the floral side, and the groomsmen on the chambray for a coordinated look that isn’t matchy-matchy.

E. Firing up the grill is dirty work. Give each groomsman a bar of Rocky Top Soap Shop soap to put their briquettes on cleanup duty before their walk down the aisle.

F. Don’t let glaring rays cause you to squint in every candid shot. Warby Parker takes the classic aviator shape and gives it a modern update in navy.

G. Keep track of to-dos, write and re-write vows, and leave notes with these convenient J. Crew notebooks.

H. Get physical without breaking a sweat with a classic lawn game from Amish Avenue.

I. These derby shoes from Walkover will make you want to go sans socks year round.

J. Add 8oz of Kentucky bourbon to traditional peach iced tea for a cool, guzzle-inducing drink.

Y’all are going to have mighty handsome gents, aren’t you? Thanks for your advice, Darren!

Nicole, August 29, 2012 11:36 am   reply We loved having your input, Darren!

2

Nicole, August 30, 2012 1:15 pm   reply Thanks for the great southern groom tips! I have a question for the southern wedding experts! I am planning our wedding for Spring, outside at plantation in Mississippi. I would love for my fiance to wear/purchase a great summer weight blue or grey suit (instead of renting). I see so many great options in your featured weddings, but never see groom attire vendors in the credits. Can you post some of the most common vendors for groom attire of this sort?! Thanks Southern Weddings! I love what you do! xoxo, nicole

Emily, August 30, 2012 1:52 pm   reply Hi Nicole! Happy to help! First, though, thank you for pointing out the lack of groom's attire credits - I don't know how we missed it, but we weren't asking for that info on our real wedding interviews!! I've added the question, so expect to see many more menswear credits on future posts! In the meantime, I'd try Brooks Brothers, J.Crew, Jos. A. Bank, Macy's, and/or Men's Wearhouse! Independent brands like Billy Reid and Sid Mashburn are also great, but more expensive!

Sponsored Post: Love Ophelia + A Giveaway!

Y’all, I love The Bachelorette. I think my TV watching habits are of a quality generally accepted in most circles, but The Bachelorette is my one weakness. I won’t go so far as to say I watch it religiously or intensely… but, I kind of do. In fact, my future sisters and brothers in law (so, all the kids and significant others on John’s side of the family) actually run a pool for each season, where “players” are drafted and points are totaled after each episode. Yes, this really happens.

And of all the bachelors and bachelorettes I have watched go on this show? Emily Maynard, the bachelorette for the season that ended on Sunday, is by far my favorite. She’s a Southern gal, and she just seems so sweet, strong, and determined to make good decisions for herself and her family. I am thrilled that she chose Jef (love him!), and am now crossing my fingers and toes that they’ll get married in Charleston (as they hinted at on Sunday!) and that their wedding will be featured in a future issue of Southern Weddings.

Besides my love for Emily and Jef, there was one other reason I was excited to watch the finale. Our friends at Love Ophelia tipped us off that Emily would be wearing their coral robe and nightie, so I kept an eye out for it the entire episode. And sure enough, Emily was sporting this beauty on the balcony before the final rose ceremony (there’s always a balcony scene, friends!). When your delicates are approved by the South’s most fashionable Bachelorette, you know you’ve got a good thing going.

Of course, there’s a lot to love about Love Ophelia besides their recent cameo on ABC. Their line of ultra-girly, boho delicates is inspired by romantic vintage pieces, and are perfect for brides to relax and get ready in. They also make a wonderful gift for bridesmaids! Even the colors sound delightful – coral, mint, rose, lemon…

I also love how thoughtful and personal this company is. Their lace collection was inspired by the wedding of one of Love Ophelia’s owners, Candice, and they donate a portion of every sale to a charity or cause that moves them. They even invite their customers to introduce them to causes with which they might not be familiar. As they say, it’s all about love.

Best news of the day? You lovelies have a chance to win one of these beautiful creations! Just comment below answering one of the following (or, if you’re feeling inspired, both of the following!):

A. Whether you were on Team Jef or Arie
B. Which color from the Serendipity collection is your favorite

We’ll pick a winner from the comments next week, and she’ll win a “something blue” — the Serendipity robe in dusty blue!

avatar
22

Brittney Perryman, July 27, 2012 10:44 am   reply This Bachelorette finale was by far the hardest for me because I loved both of the final men! Arie was clearly gaga over Emily, but the connection she shared with Jef {with one f} was palpable through the TV! Over the course of the season, I grew to love Jef as much as I loved Arie on the first night. On the night of the finale, I found myself on Team Jef! I really admire Emily for having the guts to send Arie home when she knew that Jef was the one. And the way he was with Little Ricki made me tear up! Jef is undoubtedly the man Emily is meant to spend forever with. Everything from Love Ophelia is gorgeous, but my favorite color is coral! I'm a blonde like Emily with the same skin complexion, so I know this color would look fab on me!

avatar
23

Jess, July 27, 2012 10:44 am   reply My favorite color is the coral which is my main wedding color but we also have accents of dusty blue and of course white! So really I love all the colors! These looks super comfy and I love the rompers!

avatar
25

Molly king, July 27, 2012 10:50 am   reply Team Jef all the way, there just seems to be more chemistry Rose sounds stunning and romantic

avatar
26

Christina Shippey, July 27, 2012 10:57 am   reply Coral-loved it when Emily wore it on the show! I was team Arie-but I hope she and Jef will be very happy together! :(

avatar
27

Megan, July 27, 2012 11:05 am   reply I started out as Team Arie but towards the end Jef definitely grew on me and I'm happy she chose him! The blush robe would go perfectly with my theme!

avatar
28

Caitlin, July 27, 2012 11:12 am   reply I was Team Jef ALL THE WAY! Arie brought heat and passion but Jef is the total package: sweet, thoughtful, funny,& adventurous! And I would have to say that the blue is my fave, so pretty :)

And the way Jef interacted with little Ricky sealed the deal! They will make the cutest little family! And I love the Serendipity "dusty blue"! A very close match to Carolina blue :) -Kelsey

Not only is he genuine and fun, he is also a giver; his company People Water gives a portion of proceeds to build clean drinking water around the world. I wish the best for Ricki, Jef, and Emily! My favorite color is Ivory. It is a fresh and soft color that would be perfect for a summer day. Maybe even an upcoming wedding:)

I loved the line he said in his first one on one date, about finding someone to share the details with...made me tear up and especially realize how lucky I am to be marrying my best friend in december. And of course my favorite color is the blue, blue colors bring out the blue in my eyes :)

Summer in the South: Watermelon Wonder

For a refreshing summer treat, there’s almost no beating watermelon. It’s juicy and refreshing on a hot day, and perfectly packable for impromptu picnics and road trips. Here, a few of our favorite finds and recipes inspired by this Southern summer fruit.

Gents will look dapper in a watermelon pocket square ($75)

Watermelon mojito pops make a good end-of-meal treat

Pretty emerald earrings – pair with a pink dress! ($130)

Serve watermelon balsamic cubes to start your meal on a refreshing note

A pair of pretty watermelon-inspired necklaces: green ($118) and pink ($260)

For a juicy lip, try Sephora Glossy Gloss in 06 ($10)

Pretty sandals with a coral pop ($88)

Jelly watermelon slices would be super cute at a dessert bar or as a favor ($24.50 for 5 pounds)

How fun would this be for cocktail hour – watermelon slices soaked in tequila and sprinkled with salt?
