I’ve always been inspired by the North Carolina coastal town of Southport. When I first saw trailers for Nicolas Sparks’ new movie Safe Haven, which is based in Southport, I knew it’s small beach town vibe would be a beautiful source for wedding inspiration. I reached out to the talented ladies of Kickstand Events who were thrilled to create a dream wedding for the Safe Haven characters, Alex and Katie.

We decided to incorporate details that would really resonate with fans of the book and motion picture. We strategically chose locations straight from the movie. The beautiful Southport Marina served as our ceremony and reception location – the Marina staff was absolutely wonderful! The Southport Marina is a perfect venue for an intimate wedding. The white house pictured is the actual home used in the movie. The tower-like structure in the background is seen throughout the movie as well.

In the story, Alex gives Katie a special letter, so we decided to incorporate handwritten letters in the ceremony.

Readers of the novel will recognize the reception menu – it’s straight from Chapter 16.

Kickstand Events’ incredible vision and enthusiasm for this project was beyond amazing. Together, we created beautiful imagery that we hope will bring inspiration to brides seeking a small beach town romance vibe for their wedding.

First, though, a little lesson about dainty flowers on vines that smell amazing, because we enjoy several of them in the South! The beauty above is honeysuckle its blooms are a little more trumpet shaped, and turn from pink before blossoming into flowers tinged with orange, yellow, and white.

This gal is jessamine, also known as Carolina jessamine. It has extremely prolific golden yellow blooms that blossom at the end of winter.

The Southern Stem we’re chatting about today, however, is jasmine. The version we most often see down here is Confederate or star jasmine, which has very delicate creamy white blooms. These ambitious vines can grow to be 10-15 feet tall, at a rate of 12 to 24 inches per year!

The jasmine that’s most common in weddings, though, is a bit different pinker and wispier.

I’m certainly not the only one, though! I think brides love jasmine because its tendrils add an airy garden vibe to an otherwise formal bouquet just the right note of “hand-picked.”

I love when jasmine is included in centerpieces, because it seems to make the arrangements live larger than they are, since the dainty tendrils stretch out across the table.

Speaking of spreading out, if you’re a jasmine fan, you must check out this installation created for a past Sunday Suppers dinner. Magical! Can you even imagine what that room smelled like??

Finally, I couldn’t find any cakes with jasmine vine, but I thought this stephanotis vine confection was great inspiration for what could be! And the wreath with jasmine vine was simply too pretty to leave out.

Tell me: Are you planning to incorporate jasmine vine into your bouquet? Do you have a hard time keeping all of the sweet smelling Southern blooms apart?

“This fresh Spring day started at Lilly Belle’s in the upstairs bed and breakfast,” said Rachel. “The light was bright and soft. Meredith, our bride, wore a stunning laced BHLDN dress and her golden hair was crowned with fresh flowers. Cody, our groom, is pictured in his navy suit with a German Shorthaired Pointer.”

Oh, how I love this photo! True Southern grace always come with an infectious smile, don’t you think?

“We then proceed to Carnton Plantation and feature the historic estate and manicured gardens. The intimate reception table is set between a row of trees, features a mixture of brown and white china, homemade pecan pies, wooden dog placards, beautiful earthy flowers, vintage playing cards, whiskey decanters, deer antlers and champagne with blackberries.”

Y’all know how much we love real love stories! Meredith graciously told us about how she and Cody met. After scrolling through the next few photos, we were so thrilled to get the deets behind their five-year romance and how it fatefully led them to this shoot!

“Cody and I met our freshman year in college. We had the same math teacher, but our classes were back to back. Naturally, we would pass each other every day and catch the other’s eye from time to time. Cody and I go in your “opposites attract” category. I came from a small school in Nashville, was a perfectionist, and I was social but an introvert at heart. Cody, on the other hand, was always the life of the party, smart without every trying, never forgot a name, and was incredibly charming. I went to Knoxville devastatingly homesick for Nashville, catching rides home every weekend. Finally, a few weeks into the semester, I had to face my biggest fear: staying the weekend on campus. Somehow I ended up hanging out with Cody, and it changed everything. For the first time, I got to see Cody in his element: his city, his family, and abundant excitement for life. After that I never could quite shake him. There was something about being around him that brought the light-hearted and ridiculous side out of me in the best way possible. I learned that grades didn’t have to come at the expense of my college memories, and I learned that getting an A+ is not always worth the adventures missed out on.

That’s right! He proposed!! I’ll let Cody tell you all the juicy details:

I can tell you right now that I’ve always known I was going to marry Meredith. One of the first things I told her was, “You remind me of my mom.” (Romantic, right?) It sounds weird, but I am a huge momma’s boy. Meredith may not have known it at the time, but that was the best compliment she could have received. Anyway, fast forward a few years down the road. We graduated from UT, I started working, Meredith went to Vanderbilt, and we entered in to dating long distance. It wasn’t easy, and we knew that if we could survive a long distance relationship, we were in it for the long haul. Mere said, “I don’t think I want to be engaged during school.” Naturally, I proposed the day after she graduated.

We were at a wedding in December when Rachel unknowingly kicked my plan to propose in high gear. She asked Meredith’s friend, Tori (the bride) who we were and if we would be models for a styled shoot. Sure, we weren’t married yet, but I am a photographer myself and we jumped at the opportunity! As details for the shoot started unfolding, I picked up the phone and called Rachel. She LOVED the idea of a proposal during the shoot.

I talked to Mere’s parents, got the ring, and coordinated with Rachel (all under Meredith’s nose). Finally, the big day was finally here. I couldn’t sleep for three days before, but I wasn’t nervous. The best way I can describe it is that feeling you get before Christmas when you know you’re getting an awesome bike. You can’t sleep because you’re so excited and I wasn’t getting a bike, I was getting a wife!

I hid the ring all day and we had so much fun at the shoot. There were numerous “marriage” comments but Meredith still had no idea what was about to happen. At the end of the day, Mere had changed into her getaway dress, and Rachel set up the shot for us to be “leaving the reception” so I could pop the question. Now, the whole reason we waited til the end of the shoot was so if Meredith cried, her makeup wouldn’t be messed up and ruin the entire shoot. Before I could get all of my words out, the waterworks were in full effect. Mere still didn’t believe it was happening (as her face shows in the pictures) until I pulled out the ring. Then, she said yes! After that, Rachel had brought us a bottle of champagne and captured the whole thing on photo and video. In the end, I’d say it worked out perfectly.

Who doesn’t love Pickles? When it came to our Southern vintage wedding with a twist, we knew we just had to have a Pickle Bar! What’s more refreshing on a hot summer day then biting into a cool, juicy, full-sour pickle? Our guests loved them! When I was little, my father took me on a trip to the Big Apple, where I fell in love with the cucumber’s cranky cousin, the pickle. Ever since then, I couldn’t get enough of them. I eat them with everything, including ice cream! When it came to our wedding, my soon-to-be wife, Lola knew to surprise me with a pickle bar made up of our favorite crunchy sticks from around the U.S.

We featured pickles from The Stage Deli in New York with their Full-Sour Power Pickles, Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market Pickles from Florida, and finally, our favorite, Britt’s Pickles from Seattle. They are 100% organic and come in flavors such as Pepper and Ginger and Hot and Sour!

Should you have a Pickle Bar? Darn tootin! My only advice is that you can never have too many within an hour, our guests had gobbled up every last crunchy cuc.

The theme of our wedding was very rustic and completely DIY. Our tablescapes were compiled from barnwood boxes, burlap squares, and mason jars. When we were thinking of options for our favors, we wanted something that would be consistent with the theme, but a little more unique. While looking on Pinterest I saw a picture of a mason jar cookie. I instantly knew that it was the perfect choice for our wedding favors! The cookies were made by Simple Treats by KT (simpletreatsbykt at yahoo dot com). It is a local, in-home sweet shop that specializes in cookies, cupcakes and party treats. We told them what we wanted and they turned out perfectly!

Azaleas are known as the “royalty of the garden,” which is a pretty awesome thing to be known as, if you ask me. Perhaps it’s because of their jewel-like tones? Azaleas bloom in every shade of red, pink, coral, white, and yellow.

The Indica azalea is native to Japan, and got its name because, at the time it was discovered, Asia was known as the East Indies. It made its way to the U.S. through Charleston, and as early as 1845, the largest and oldest collection flourished at Magnolia Plantation. Thousands of azaleas still grace their beds today, though only 40 of the 86 original cultivars can be positively identified (fascinating!). I’ve actually been to Magnolia Plantation, though not when the azaleas were blooming, sadly.

Knit, Click, and Stir

Many sources say that azaleas are the most common bush in the South, so if you’re interested in planting some Southern stems in your own yard, these beauties are a great pick! Most varieties like the filtered shade available beneath tall trees, making azaleas a great pick for where grass doesn’t like to grow. These bushes grow to all different sizes and shapes, up to eight to twelve feet tall and wide!

Azaleas are not as commonly used in weddings as other Southern favorites like gardenias are, but I would love to see that change! I think their vibrant colors and pretty trumpet shapes are perfect for bouquets and arrangements.

Kristin: Hands down my favorite. I have been a loyal SW reader since sometime before V3 hit shelves. I remember when I saw the V3 cover for the first time and fell head over heels. It just shouts ‘Southern goodness’ to me. The images radiate freshness and simplicity and joy and of course I LOVED the peaches. The fact that this shoot was called “Carolina on My Mind’ probably didn’t hurt either. This shoot inspired a few details of my own wedding. The texture in her bouquet was the inspiration for my bridesmaids bouquets. The freshness and comfort of the setting played a big role in my decision to make our wedding reflect our favorite things.

Lara: I will never forget seeing the V3 shoot from Joey and Jessica for the first time. It was love at first sight! The bride’s casual sweet braid combined with the beautiful blooms and her relaxed joy made for a magical cover!

Marissa: For some reason this shoot has always stuck with me. It’s different than our traditional aesthetic (and different than what I personally always fall for), and the BIG image of the model with the red lips is absolutely stunning!

Emily: There was definitely something magical about the hot air balloon shoot we put together for V3. Even though I am NOT an early bird and would almost never say anything positive about getting up at 3am (seriously, I am not kidding – 3am), I will admit it was absolutely mesmerizing to see the sun rise over the Blue Ridge Mountains while I stood in the middle of an empty field wet with dew and a hot air balloon inflated next to me. Plus, the shoot was over by 9am, which is a much shorter shoot day than I’m used to!!

Marissa: While this shoot is stunningly gorgeous, the memories from this shoot are by far some of my favorite SW memories to date. Must have been something about that Southern heat!

Kristin: I left off the Yellow Rose of Texas shoot at first because I know it is a favorite of many. I fell in love with all the little children and loved the bright yellow against the Texas rolling hills and big blue sky. Oh my, those children and those bright yellow roses.

Nicole: For a lover of all things pie-related, this was a no-brainer. It was the gorgeous family-style table setup and the addition of beautiful china patterns that took this concept over the top for me.

Even though we featured a whole bunch of surcees on Tuesday, we have one more for you today! This one definitely embodies a thoughtful gift given unexpectedly or for no reason one of my favorite kinds!

Says Amber Housley, the designer and stylist:

I love this time of year because the packaging and supplies in stores are in such cheerful hues! These take-out boxes from World Market in wide range of Easter egg inspired colors would make perfect vessels for a sweet treat such as these confetti pretzels. You can whip up a large batch of these in no time at all, and they’ll make a great gift for your spring gatherings and friends.

What you’ll need:
– large snack-size pretzels
– white vanilla candy melting chips
– candy confetti sprinkles
– mixing bowl
– cookie sheet, lined with wax paper
– microwave or double boiler to melt the vanilla candy chips
– colorful take-out boxes and stuffing to gift the finished pretzels (in addition to World Market, we like checking out the Container Store, Michaels, and Target for fun vessels! Online, Shop Sweet Lulu is a treasure trove!)

Step 1: Melt the candy chips in a bowl by using the microwave and stirring every 30 seconds or using a double boiler until chips are melted.

Step 2: Dip the pretzels until covered then hold over bowl, allowing the excess coating to drip off.

Step 3: Place the pretzels on the wax paper covered cookie sheet in a single layer. Sprinkle with candy confetti as desired then place sheet in refrigerator for at least 15 minutes or until set.

Step 4: Carefully pull pretzels up from wax paper and package in take-out box containers for gift giving!

Though I have many loves, gardenias are without a doubt my favorite Southern flower. Aside from their gorgeous looks, their smell is absolutely divine. (Strong, but divine.) I also love how something so precious is at the same time so common, at least in the South. Almost every house in my neighborhood has a bush, and I snapped this perfect bloom one of many we passed! on a walk one evening last June.

The most common variety of gardenias, gardenia jasminoides, is native to Southern China and Japan, but has found a happy home in the American South. No surprise, since they are a majorly heat-loving plant! Gardenias are also known as Cape Jasmine.

Another reason gardenias are perfect for the South? They represent grace and hospitality perfect for planting beside your front porch! Gardenias are actually a species of evergreen, so they keep their gorgeous glossy dark green leaves all winter. The leaves are beautiful to include in wedding arrangements, too!

Gardenias were particularly popular in weddings in the ’60s and ’70s, and are still a favorite with classic brides today. A few tips if you’re planning on using them in your own celebration: Make sure you like the smell! As noted above, gardenias have a strong scent, so even one bloom in a bouquet can make an impact.

Also, while gardenias’ petals are delightfully creamy, they’re also exceptionally fragile, and too much handling can cause the petals to turn brown quickly. If you’re planning to pin a bloom in your hair, reserve two blossoms with your florist that way, you can change it out post-ceremony to keep things fresh for the reception. Or, opt for a faux version DK Designs makes a clay beauty we love!

Let’s start with Krewes. Mardi Gras wouldn’t happen without them, as Krewes are the groups/organizations that put on the balls and parades. Each Krewe meets throughout the year to discuss and build their floats in secret, and on the day of their parade, they ride wearing masks. Some Krewes have been around since the 1800′s, while others have been in existence for just a few years; in some, membership is limited to only relatives of previous members, and in others, anyone who can pay the membership fee can join.

Each Krewe holds their own parade leading up to Mardi Gras, each with a unique theme, and two Krewes Rex and Zulu hold parades on Fat Tuesday itself. Aside from a captain, each Krewe has a royal party headed by a king and queen (which I’ve always wanted to be!) that preside over the parade and floats.

Oh Mardi Gras colors, you’re so ugly and so fabulous all at the same time! Purple, green, and gold is the official Mardi Gras’ color palette, and can be seen on everything from costumes to beads. In true Southern form, even the colors themselves have symbolic meaning: purple stands for justice, green for faith, and gold for power.

Beads are still the most popular throw from floats, but doubloons have a history of their own, too! When we moved out of my childhood home, I can remember finding boxes full of these brightly colored coins – boy, did we have a collection. Originally used as currency, today’s doubloons are two-sided coins thrown from the parade floats (keep an eye out for them these sucker can be dangerous!). They are imprinted with the Krewe’s name, emblem, and founding date on one side, and the current year and theme of the parade on the other.

Krewe doubloons are highly collectable and can create quite a ruckus in the crowd!

I know quite a lot about Mardi Gras traditions, but The Golden Nugget is new to me! Originally thrown by the Zulu Krewe, these coconuts are thought to be the most sought-after throw in any Mardi Gras parade. In the early 1900’s, Zulu members threw coconuts (yep, just plain old coconuts) from their floats as a cheaper alternative to glass beads. Today, the coconuts are drained and hand painted either in gold or black and white.

Don’t be scared, my friends! In 1988, the City of New Orleans banned Zulu riders from throwing the coconuts from the floats and demanded the “throws” be handed to the crowds, making them even harder to catch and all the more valuable to spectators!

Although I’ve never seen this next tradition in person, I can imagine it is a fantastic show! The Flambeaux tradition dates back to the 1800′s when New Orleans did not have electric street lights to light the night parades. Traditionally, the Flambeaux walked in front of the floats holding large torches, and put on their own show in front of the riders, dancing and doing tricks with the torches. Today, a few Krewes still roll out at night with the Flambeaux leading the way.

Last, but certainly not least, we have Mardi Gras balls! Similar to my love for debutante cotillions, the Mardi Gras ball is one of my favorite aspects of Mardi Gras! Each year, Krewes host elaborate formal balls during Mardi Gras season. This is the time when kings and queens are first introduced, and the queens get to wear the most fabulous costumes! The queens’ stunning gowns, sparkling tiaras, and over-the-top collars are still my very favorite part of the Mobile Carnival Museum!

The original Mardi Gras balls were such important social affairs that Krewes had the invitations die cast in Paris and sent to New Orleans – fancy! Today, some Krewes still hold private invitation-only balls, while others have started allowing anyone to purchase tickets.

Well, now that I’m WAY too sad that I’m not spending today in Mobile (or Nola!), tell me: What’s your favorite Mardi Gras tradition? Have you ever caught a golden nugget?!

Handmade anything adds such a personal touch to celebrations big and small, which makes me love this easy DIY from Gray Harper even more.

So sweet, and so simple! Andrea and co fashioned these as guest favors filled with grits, but they could also be darling as embellished drink holders for bridal party members at the reception. They could also be fun for a bridal shower, bridesmaids’ brunch, or girls’ weekend!

Your Instructions:

1. Cut an 8 x 8 inch piece of fabric and fold it as shown, first in half, and then in half again. Sew along the unfinished edge.
2. Rotate the seam to the middle. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise and sew again along the short unfinished edge. Move the seam to the middle again.
3. Cut a small piece of fabric (mine was 2 x 4). This will become the middle of your bow tie. Fold it in half lengthwise and sew along the open edge, then move that seam to the middle as well.
4. Wrap your “middle” around the middle of the tie to see how tight you think it needs to be. Slip it off and sew it closed in that spot, making a small loop.
5. After sewing the middle piece closed, squeeze it back into place in the middle of the tie. It should be fairly tight. You now have your bow tie!
6. Adhere the burlap ribbon and bow tie to the Mason jar using your glue gun, and enjoy!

Gray Harper is a delightful Southern Weddings advertiser!

Our goal was to create an inspiring editorial session that captured winter elegance in an unexpected and modern way. We pulled together a muted color palette of icy blue, ivory, forest green and cranberry. The white muslin fabric throughout the design pulls from white snow, the greyish blue from icy water, and the brown recycled kraft paper from bare trees. Because of the earthy color palette, it seemed fitting to do hand lettering with a very light and free hand. The antlers were used throughout to frame different components tied in the wintery earthy feel, as well.

I am obsessed with this dress by Ines Di Santo. Fun fact – the dress was shipped directly to us from the designer. It was pulled right off the runway at bridal fashion week and sent to Solutions Bridal for the shoot! These are the first photographs of this gorgeous dress outside of the runway photos. I was in wedding heaven! I love the lace detailing and tulle overlay. So dreamy. And Josh from Willard Randall did a fantastic job styling our groom to keep up with our bride’s gorgeous look – I loved the grey and on grey layering.

I can’t get over how beautiful this family is! I love Adis’s summery white dress, too. The hints of lace are the perfect amount for an outdoor vow renewal, no?

Describe the proposal: It was at a restaurant and I was wearing a white dress, ironically. As he was nervously about to pop the question, he accidentally spilled his wine glass all over me. We both laughed it off and I immediately said yes.

What do you love most about each other? (From Adis) I love how he keeps me grounded and puts things into perspective; to not sweat the small stuff. (From Victor) I love how she has such a young spirit about her and a contagious laugh.

What have you learned over your years of marriage? Learning to compromise and choosing your battles. And learning to not have arguments but to have productive discussions.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I knew the type of dress I wanted: something comfortable and knee length. I had a family friend make the dress so it was exactly what I wanted.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Knowing that we were marrying the person we felt that we were meant to be with.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your renewal? The biggest challenge was staying in budget.
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? We had 3 different musical acts that we splurged on. Music and dancing are very important to our family.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Learn to enjoy the planning along the way and try not to get over stressed. Remember why you are having a wedding in the first place.

While the blooms in these bouquets speak for themselves, part of the fun is coming up with a creative way to wrap them. We loved the idea of using a white pleated ribbon on the gorgeous arrangement above. After a fruitless online search, we just made one ourselves!

We couldn’t resist tying off the strawberry fields-inspired bouquet below with a matching bow tie from Mo’s Bows. Oh-so-Southern, indeed!

Y’all know monograms are our thing. We flipped when we saw this sweet embroidered charm from Daydream Stitching.

Which one is your favorite?

Happy Monday, friends! Here’s a fun story for you. Josh McCullock and Gibson Events placed a joint ad in Southern Weddings V5. Lara became a little obsessed with the photo they used for their ad, and we all wondered where it had come from. Imagine my delight, then, when Lindsay submitted this shoot to us, containing that very photo! The story behind the shoot is really neat, so make sure you read on for all the details below. And be sure to jot down some notes along the way I know I’m taking some for my next dinner party!

From Lindsay: As a planner I’m frequently asked for recommendations for photographers, and to describe each photographer’s style. I thought it might be interesting to style a large scale photo shoot and have several photographers capture it in the way they saw fit. My hope was for the result was to have a side by side contrast of the same event through four lenses. We present the photos with watermarks so viewers can make their own comparison.

We gathered four couples (all former clients from the past year) and got to it. We assigned a couple to each photographer. To make sure we weren’t playing favorites we styled the shoot as an engagement or dinner party so no one got the “bride and groom”.

It took a pretty awesome looking spreadsheet but we managed for each photographer to have time with their couple alone, with everyone together, to shoot each vignette individually and to shoot each vignette with their couple.

For this shoot we had a specific aesthetic in mind and really lucked into our venue. Luckily the good people at Calvert’s Plant Interiors were willing to trust the vision and allowed us to come in on a Sunday, when they were closed, and basically take over the site.

The second purpose of the shoot was to have an awesome collection of photos to promote The Ball and Chain; A thoughtfully curated bridal show that doesn’t feel like torture. This will be a small, boutique bridal event featuring the vendors below and a few more of our dearest friends in the business that share our aesthetic. Coming to Oklahoma City on January 24, 2013.

Wouldn’t this idea be so fun in a reception powder room? I think a huge part of wedding details is creating little surprises and delights for your guests throughout the day, and this lipstick and pearls station would definitely qualify!

Not to be outdone, the gents have their own station, complete with bow ties for those who might be lacking and a few reminders on gentlemanly behavior.

I love this idea so much. Weddings are all about celebrating family, and while I always enjoy a good photo display at any celebration I attend, I often wish I knew a little bit more about the people in the photos! Little signs (try place card holders for the stands) would clear things up in style.

It’s the last week before Christmas, and all through the Southern Wedding offices, gals are getting excited! Especially when we get to share lovely holiday inspiration like this with you. What I love most about today’s shoot is that it shows how easily winter or Christmas style can be translated to the sunny South, snow or no snow. The tartan and deer motif Better Half Weddings and Julia Rohde Designs put together is simply adorable no freezing temps required.

Such a gorgeous winter bouquet! I love all the green tones from the eucalyptus and dusty miller.

“For many years my family and I have celebrated Christmas at our family cabin in north Georgia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Having grown up in South Florida, it is always a nice escape from tropical weather and a busy city life when we visit. Apple cider, homemade chili, a warm fire and deer sightings are the everyday in that region of our country. The South. And during wintertime you just might get to see the snow fall through the cabin windows. Many times we have had brunch in nearby lodges, decked with pine garlands, mounted deer head, and Christmas lights – the ambiance is always so festive. This experience inspired Shelley and I for this shoot. Shelley is originally from Northern California, and shares just as many memories of cabins, snow, and deer from her family vacations on the west coast. As Floridians, we generally don’t see seasons change like up north or in other parts of the country. We also don’t see much in the way of lodges or barns. On our search for the perfect venue for this inspiration, we found the Cooper Estate in Homestead, Florida. With its mounted deer head and rustic charm, Shelley and I knew it was the perfect fit. We tied the look together with splashes of plaid, vintage silver trophies, wood slabs, moss, a hot cocoa bar, and adorable miniature deer. We wanted to show brides that even though we don’t get snow, it is possible to have a winter themed wedding down in South Florida.”
