Southern Weddings Behind the Scenes: February 2013

March 14, 2013 by Nicole in InTheOffice,Main | 4 comments

It has been a busy start to the year! We haven’t given y’all a behind-the-scenes look into the lives of the SW gals in awhile, but we’re happily sharing a few glimpses from our time in and out of the office today. As Kristin says, February was the time of love and birthdays.

1. Marissa posted her favorite new shirt from Petal Boutique. It’s business in the front and a party in the back, she says!

2. I pulled out my Pantone swatches to do some color matching for a new product in the shop. Can you tell which print I was working on?

3. Kristin and the SW gals celebrated sweet Marissa’s birthday with a dance party and a cupcake. This is one of K’s favorite pictures ever. (Thanks Kat Harris!)

4. Lara launched her brand new site! See it here y’all.

5. Marissa’s suitcase was a bit over packed for her trip out west, so this Southern girl had to wear her winter coat through the airport!

6. Emily has been loving her tending list and notepad from the new Lara Casey shop.

7. Emily and John celebrated Valentine’s Day with dinner at home and a first viewing of their Inkspot long-form wedding film.

8. Valentine’s Day was delicious in the office thanks to a treat from our intern, Jessica. She gave us heart-shaped biscuits and jam!

9. Kristin and Kyle celebrated Valentine’s Day with a picnic on the floor of their living room using a quilt made by Kristin’s great aunt (a gorgeous wedding ring quilt, oh my stars)!

10. Marissa and her husband got a big laugh out of their last name being on the Padres pronunciation guide for Spring Training. (It’s pronounced “close,” not “clo-ess.”)

11. Grace surpassed walking and started running — a lot!

12. Emily was very happy about our closet overhaul and organization day. It now houses all of our pretty new prints!

13 In addition to their wedding film, Emily and John also received their disc of wedding images from Tanja. She included some gorgeous prints with hand-cut mats.

14. Kristin shared her love story with our amazing readers! Yay!!

15. We had plenty of exciting staff meetings this month as we reviewed our January goals and discussed ideas for V6!

16 Kristin spread some love to celebrate Emily’s birthday and sent a pile of goodies to The Birthday Party Project. (See Emily’s post on it here.)

17. We all appreciated the Southern charm dripping from the lovely cotton wreath on Lara’s office door.

18. My boyfriend and I watched our rival alma maters play against each other in basketball. The Tar Heels won. :)

Tell us: What did you do in February? What were the highlights of your month?

Southern Weddings #SouthernDoin Challenge: March 2013

March 7, 2013 by Emily in InTheOffice,Main | 4 comments

February, the month of love, was the perfect time to kick off our Monthly #SouthernDoin challenges. And y’all rose to the occasion! Just a few of our favorite sweet surprise gestures that you kind ladies shared via our hashtag…

Erin made heart-shaped strawberry biscuits for her husband on Valentine’s Day; McKenzie made delicious-looking pancakes for her sweetie; Sam left a sweet note on her fiance’s car when he was having a bad day; and Kristin sent a surprise package to The Birthday Party Project in honor of my birthday!

All together now: awwwww!

In case you’re not familiar with the concept of a Southern Doin’, I’ll recap for ya: A Southern Doin’ is any sort of a Southern activity. There’s no official panel of judges that decides whether or not something is Southern; you get to decide for yourself whether your Doin’ falls under the spirit of the South! We came up with Southern Doin’s because even in the midst of V5 craziness, we didn’t want to forget to get outside our office and remember all of the things we love about the South. (And there are oh so many things.)

We’re ratcheting things up a notch this year with our Southern Doin’ monthly challenges. Each month we’ll pick a Doin’ prompt and post it here — something to encourage y’all to go, do, make, explore, discover, and love in the spirit of the South and the Sweet Tea Society.

We’ll be Doin’ right alongside you, and we’ll all try to remember and use the #southerndoin hashtag, alrighty? Then, we’ll come back here and post a little recap on the blog of our favorite tweeted, instagrammed, or Facebooked Doin’s before we post the next month’s challenge.

But enough explanation — time for the challenge! The Southern Weddings office has been all abuzz over the impending arrival of spring, so for March’s #SouthernDoin Challenge, snap a photo of a sign of springtime in the South! Maybe you’ll spot daffodils or camellias on your after-work walk. Maybe you’ll sit outside for the first time this year at your favorite Southern eatery. Maybe you’ll spy some adorable baby farm animals (you know we’d love that one!). Whatever it is, we’d love for you to share it with us! We’ll be sharing our favorites next month right here on the blog.

Are you in? Sound off in the comments! And happy Doin’!

P.S. Suggestions for future challenges are welcome! Just leave a comment below or feel free to email me.

Bridget, March 7, 2013 9:32 am   reply Awww, love this idea. Even though it feels like the coldest winter in the Triangle for years, I have seen beautiful daffodils popping up everywhere!

Victoria, March 7, 2013 10:13 am   reply Will a photo of my sinus and allergy prescriptions do? Hahaha just kidding! It's still chilly in Alabama, but the seasonal allergies have definitely arrived! I hope to find a more uplifting sign of Spring soon:)

Emily, March 7, 2013 2:19 pm   reply Haha!! I'm with you, Victoria!

Happy Birthday, Emily!

February 28, 2013 by Marissa in InTheOffice,Main,Personal | 9 comments

That’s right , y’all! Its our very own Mrs. Emily Thomas’s birthday today! We would love for y’all to help us send her some birthday love!

Here’s how: Since it’s the very last day of February, that also means it’s the last day to jump on board with our February #SouthernDoin Challenge. Our Emily is one of the best gals you’ll find around these parts and she’s got a heart of gold when it comes to giving back. We love this gal’s passion for kindness, love and community. We’d love for y’all to honor this lovely lady’s birthday with something sweet. Nope, not with a cupcake or some red velvet cake, but with a random act of kindness or a surprise sweet gesture for someone you love. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #SouthernDoin and wish this pretty girl the best birthday yet!

Happy Birthday, Emily! Lots of love and hugs, Marissa, Lara, Nicole + Kristin

Southern Weddings Summer Intern

February 19, 2013 by Emily in InTheOffice,Main,News | 20 comments

Hello, belles! We’re starting to cook up Southern Weddings V6 shoots over here, which means one thing: summer will be here before we know it! Not that we want to rush past spring, but we do want to be ready for all the excitement, and that means we’re looking for our next summer editorial intern. This is a fantastic opportunity for one lucky guy or gal to get a hands-on experience working in a dynamic, small-office environment. Here is what we’re looking for:

– An undergraduate student who can commit to working approximately 20 hours a week in June and July. We would ideally love someone who could start in late May and stay into August, as well, for a total of about 10 weeks.
SOMEONE WHO LOVES WEDDINGS. More than anything else, we want to work with someone who loves weddings and has a KEEN familiarity with weddings, wedding trends, the wedding industry, and the wedding publishing industry.
– A great work ethic is super important to us, as well as someone who loves to learn, can work and problem solve independently, and is very responsible.
– We would consider a firm grasp on grammar and working knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, and WordPress a bonus.

Nancy Ray

Every Southern Weddings intern opportunity is a bit different, but here are some of the things you can expect to experience:
– Sitting in on and contributing to weekly staff meetings and brainstorming sessions
– Learning the basics of and working with a WordPress blog and the Adobe Creative Suite
– Writing a post on the blog and/or copy for the magazine
– Researching images and products for posts and editorial shoots
– Assisting on site at editorial shoots
– Building galleries on the SW site
– Getting a firsthand view of how a bustling magazine, blog, shop, and small business run with a small staff of women

Sound like you? Please fill out this form by Sunday, March 3 at 11:59pm. Please let us know in the comments if you have any questions. Please do not email your application to us or email us to confirm receipt. We will be in touch with applicants who we think might be a good fit within two weeks of March 3.

This position is unpaid, but we are happy to work with you to get college credit if that’s something your school offers. We know this will be a great learning opportunity! If chosen for the internship, we will need you to work in person at our Chapel Hill office, but any college student who can get themselves to Chapel Hill for the summer is eligible to apply.

We can’t wait to hear from y’all!!

Margaret, February 19, 2013 8:02 pm   reply I so, so wish I could apply for this! But alas, I'm a girl from Michigan and just can't swing it! Who knows, maybe I'll get to meet y'all in the future! ;)

avatar
avatar

Emily, February 20, 2013 9:30 am   reply I hope so, Margaret!!

2

Dee Shore, February 19, 2013 10:41 pm   reply Could I apply even if I live in NYC? I'll bake you cookies! lol

avatar
avatar

Emily, February 20, 2013 9:30 am   reply Hi Dee! We welcome interns from all over as long as they meet the basic criteria we set out: a current undergraduate student who can live in Chapel Hill this summer :)

3

Kendall, February 20, 2013 12:39 pm   reply Would the 20 hours a week be committed in the office or could work be done away from office? I live about an hour and a half sound of Chapel Hill in Benson, NC and would love this opportunity.

avatar
avatar

Emily, February 20, 2013 1:31 pm   reply Hi Kendall! It's possible some work could be done outside the office, but I would say at least 15 hours would need to be in the office. One of the best parts of the internship is experiencing and participating in our office culture and meetings, so I wouldn't want you to miss out on that!

avatar

Kendall, February 20, 2013 2:27 pm   reply Emily, thank you so much! I will get to working on my application!!

avatar

Kendall, February 25, 2013 11:38 am   reply Emily: I have a quick question, I do not have a online portfolio yet, however I have my work in an PDF. Could I submit that instead? Thank you!

avatar

Emily, February 25, 2013 1:36 pm   reply Hi Kendall! We are trying to keep everything in one place (the form) so we don't have to be referencing multiple emails for every applicant. If there's a way to upload your PDF to the form, then absolutely!

4

Kaitlyn, February 21, 2013 4:17 pm   reply Will you all be offering any internships during the school year? I am studying abroad in Italy this summer and am so disappointed that I can't apply for this! Where would I find information about possible fall or spring internships for next year?

avatar
avatar

Emily, February 21, 2013 4:42 pm   reply Hi Kaitlyn! Yes, we do offer fall and spring internships! You can email me your resume and cover letter directly in August for a fall internship and November/December for a spring internship. Have a great time abroad!

avatar

Kaitlyn, February 21, 2013 6:23 pm   reply Emily: Okay, thank you! I meant to say in the earlier post that I am hoping to study abroad, but I haven't been accepted yet so I will still be submitting an application. I was just so excited to see this post and I answered hastily. I have been checking the website religiously about information on internships! Thank you so much for the information!

5

Laura, February 22, 2013 12:25 pm   reply Would you consider graduate students who meet all the other criteria (love weddings, great work ethic, experience in journalism)? If so, I would love to apply...this is such an exciting position!

Haylee Waymann, February 24, 2013 8:56 pm   reply After stumbling upon this amazing magazine a few months ago, I have become obsessed with the classic chic and southern charm that I have been fortunate enough to witness on a few occasions in real life. And while this appears to be an absolute dream internship, would it ever be possible for a Canadian college student to be accepted?I know it's a little snowy and cold up here, but I've got the makings of a Belle on the inside! Eagerly hoping you will say yes, but I will be patient and wait to hear back.

avatar
avatar

Emily, February 25, 2013 3:05 pm   reply Hi Haylee! Yes, absolutely! If you can get yourself to Chapel Hill for the summer, then you are eligible to apply!

8

Morgan Kidwell, March 5, 2013 11:34 pm   reply Hello Southern Wedding Magazine staff, I just wanted to say how excited I am that you all are doing an internship this summer! I am very eager to hear what a great turn out there was in applications and I would love to spend my sweet summer working with a lovely staff. I was wondering one small detail, for whomever is accepted, since the internship in unpaid because it is for school credit would someone be able to assist in finding affordable housing near Chapel Hill for the summer? I understand it is a college town so there must be someone needing a sub-leaser.

avatar
9

Emily, March 6, 2013 9:45 am   reply Hi Morgan! We're happy to help as much as we can (pointing you toward some resources, etc.), but the responsibility it ultimately up to the intern. As Chapel Hill is a college town, there are definitely more options than usual!

avatar
10

Morgan Munn, March 18, 2013 1:26 pm   reply Hi Emily, I was wondering if all the applicants would get a response or if you only receive a response if you make it to the next level? I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your time, Morgan

avatar

Emily, March 18, 2013 1:33 pm   reply Hi Morgan! We're running a bit behind, but yes, we're going to try and respond to everyone! Thanks so much!
