New in the Southern Weddings Shop!

March 12, 2013 by Emily in Main,News | 1 comment

Since we’re talking about new things today, I first wanted to mention that our sidebar is looking pretty fancy all by itself! We did a tune-up over the weekend to offer a better mix of options for our delightful advertisers, and we’re so pleased with how it turned out. As always, if you’re interested in advertising with SW, just email Marissa or fill out this form!

Now, it occurred to the SW ladies a few days ago that we’ve never formally introduced y’all to our new shop! Not that we’re that formal over here, but we do like to keep up with some niceties, and proper introductions for something this exciting only seems fitting.

The pieces in our shop are lovely, I’d say there’s no question about that. But, what we’re most proud of is how they fit so perfectly into our heart and mission — love for the South, love for love and marriage, and love to lead couples toward rich, full lives. We’re not just doing this to do it, we’re doing it because we couldn’t be more excited about it!! I think the mission will become even more apparent as we roll out new goodies, but I hope y’all can see even now where we’re headed!

Today, I’m going to highlight a few of my very favorite products quicker than two shakes of a lamb’s tail. First up is the South print. Right now we’re stocking it in pretty pink, metallic gold, and the loveliest shade of teal. It’s Hardink Calligraphy’s work that graces this letterpress beauty, which you may recognize it from the pages of Southern Weddings V5!

Next up is our “Vows” print, which is also pulled from the pages of V5! Lindsay Letters penned this gorgeous reminder of our wedding ceremonies. I think this one would be perfect for a bedroom, whether you choose it in metallic gold, perfect pink, or pool and gold. This one also makes a stunning wedding or shower gift — I think it’s okay to go off-registry in this case! :)

The newest additions to the Southern Weddings gang are these darling goodies from Belle & Union. We featured Meg’s Southern phrase cards in V5, and when we approached her about selling them in our shop, she was thrilled — she said she had gotten so many requests from you all post-publication, but wasn’t able to fulfill them since she doesn’t do retail! Right now we have eight of her letterpress cards in stock (they’re available in sets of three, too!), and three of her oh-my-word-cute Southern tea towels.

That’s all for today, but don’t be surprised if we pop back in soon with more introductions! Until then, enjoy the shop!

Elizabeth Hardin is a delightful member of our Blue Ribbon Vendor Directory!

Kelly, March 17, 2013 11:41 pm   reply One of Meg's friends was in my bridal party and I received the tea towels (and matching recipe cards) at my bridal shower. I AM IN LOVE WITH THEM. The towels are huge, a great quality, and add the perfect pop of color in our kitchen. I'm seriously considering gifting them at every shower I go to in the future. I just need to get my hands on her wrapping paper now! Keep up the good work, Meg!

Southern Weddings Summer Intern

February 19, 2013 by Emily in InTheOffice,Main,News | 20 comments

Hello, belles! We’re starting to cook up Southern Weddings V6 shoots over here, which means one thing: summer will be here before we know it! Not that we want to rush past spring, but we do want to be ready for all the excitement, and that means we’re looking for our next summer editorial intern. This is a fantastic opportunity for one lucky guy or gal to get a hands-on experience working in a dynamic, small-office environment. Here is what we’re looking for:

– An undergraduate student who can commit to working approximately 20 hours a week in June and July. We would ideally love someone who could start in late May and stay into August, as well, for a total of about 10 weeks.
SOMEONE WHO LOVES WEDDINGS. More than anything else, we want to work with someone who loves weddings and has a KEEN familiarity with weddings, wedding trends, the wedding industry, and the wedding publishing industry.
– A great work ethic is super important to us, as well as someone who loves to learn, can work and problem solve independently, and is very responsible.
– We would consider a firm grasp on grammar and working knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, and WordPress a bonus.

Nancy Ray

Every Southern Weddings intern opportunity is a bit different, but here are some of the things you can expect to experience:
– Sitting in on and contributing to weekly staff meetings and brainstorming sessions
– Learning the basics of and working with a WordPress blog and the Adobe Creative Suite
– Writing a post on the blog and/or copy for the magazine
– Researching images and products for posts and editorial shoots
– Assisting on site at editorial shoots
– Building galleries on the SW site
– Getting a firsthand view of how a bustling magazine, blog, shop, and small business run with a small staff of women

Sound like you? Please fill out this form by Sunday, March 3 at 11:59pm. Please let us know in the comments if you have any questions. Please do not email your application to us or email us to confirm receipt. We will be in touch with applicants who we think might be a good fit within two weeks of March 3.

This position is unpaid, but we are happy to work with you to get college credit if that’s something your school offers. We know this will be a great learning opportunity! If chosen for the internship, we will need you to work in person at our Chapel Hill office, but any college student who can get themselves to Chapel Hill for the summer is eligible to apply.

We can’t wait to hear from y’all!!

Margaret, February 19, 2013 8:02 pm   reply I so, so wish I could apply for this! But alas, I'm a girl from Michigan and just can't swing it! Who knows, maybe I'll get to meet y'all in the future! ;)

avatar
avatar

Emily, February 20, 2013 9:30 am   reply I hope so, Margaret!!

2

Dee Shore, February 19, 2013 10:41 pm   reply Could I apply even if I live in NYC? I'll bake you cookies! lol

avatar
avatar

Emily, February 20, 2013 9:30 am   reply Hi Dee! We welcome interns from all over as long as they meet the basic criteria we set out: a current undergraduate student who can live in Chapel Hill this summer :)

3

Kendall, February 20, 2013 12:39 pm   reply Would the 20 hours a week be committed in the office or could work be done away from office? I live about an hour and a half sound of Chapel Hill in Benson, NC and would love this opportunity.

avatar
avatar

Emily, February 20, 2013 1:31 pm   reply Hi Kendall! It's possible some work could be done outside the office, but I would say at least 15 hours would need to be in the office. One of the best parts of the internship is experiencing and participating in our office culture and meetings, so I wouldn't want you to miss out on that!

avatar

Kendall, February 20, 2013 2:27 pm   reply Emily, thank you so much! I will get to working on my application!!

avatar

Kendall, February 25, 2013 11:38 am   reply Emily: I have a quick question, I do not have a online portfolio yet, however I have my work in an PDF. Could I submit that instead? Thank you!

avatar

Emily, February 25, 2013 1:36 pm   reply Hi Kendall! We are trying to keep everything in one place (the form) so we don't have to be referencing multiple emails for every applicant. If there's a way to upload your PDF to the form, then absolutely!

4

Kaitlyn, February 21, 2013 4:17 pm   reply Will you all be offering any internships during the school year? I am studying abroad in Italy this summer and am so disappointed that I can't apply for this! Where would I find information about possible fall or spring internships for next year?

avatar
avatar

Emily, February 21, 2013 4:42 pm   reply Hi Kaitlyn! Yes, we do offer fall and spring internships! You can email me your resume and cover letter directly in August for a fall internship and November/December for a spring internship. Have a great time abroad!

avatar

Kaitlyn, February 21, 2013 6:23 pm   reply Emily: Okay, thank you! I meant to say in the earlier post that I am hoping to study abroad, but I haven't been accepted yet so I will still be submitting an application. I was just so excited to see this post and I answered hastily. I have been checking the website religiously about information on internships! Thank you so much for the information!

5

Laura, February 22, 2013 12:25 pm   reply Would you consider graduate students who meet all the other criteria (love weddings, great work ethic, experience in journalism)? If so, I would love to apply...this is such an exciting position!

Haylee Waymann, February 24, 2013 8:56 pm   reply After stumbling upon this amazing magazine a few months ago, I have become obsessed with the classic chic and southern charm that I have been fortunate enough to witness on a few occasions in real life. And while this appears to be an absolute dream internship, would it ever be possible for a Canadian college student to be accepted?I know it's a little snowy and cold up here, but I've got the makings of a Belle on the inside! Eagerly hoping you will say yes, but I will be patient and wait to hear back.

avatar
avatar

Emily, February 25, 2013 3:05 pm   reply Hi Haylee! Yes, absolutely! If you can get yourself to Chapel Hill for the summer, then you are eligible to apply!

8

Morgan Kidwell, March 5, 2013 11:34 pm   reply Hello Southern Wedding Magazine staff, I just wanted to say how excited I am that you all are doing an internship this summer! I am very eager to hear what a great turn out there was in applications and I would love to spend my sweet summer working with a lovely staff. I was wondering one small detail, for whomever is accepted, since the internship in unpaid because it is for school credit would someone be able to assist in finding affordable housing near Chapel Hill for the summer? I understand it is a college town so there must be someone needing a sub-leaser.

avatar
9

Emily, March 6, 2013 9:45 am   reply Hi Morgan! We're happy to help as much as we can (pointing you toward some resources, etc.), but the responsibility it ultimately up to the intern. As Chapel Hill is a college town, there are definitely more options than usual!

avatar
10

Morgan Munn, March 18, 2013 1:26 pm   reply Hi Emily, I was wondering if all the applicants would get a response or if you only receive a response if you make it to the next level? I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your time, Morgan

avatar

Emily, March 18, 2013 1:33 pm   reply Hi Morgan! We're running a bit behind, but yes, we're going to try and respond to everyone! Thanks so much!

The Sweet Tea Society + New Media Kit

February 14, 2013 by Emily in Main,News | 2 comments

Happy Valentine’s Day, dear gals! Love is always worth celebrating, don’t you think? Love for our significant others, yep, but also love for our families, our friends, the weddings we get to plan, traditions we get to pass down, biscuits… the list goes on and on.

We’re so thankful that all of y’all remind us every day why we do what we do, and that you put what we believe into action.

New friends, you can always find a Sweet Tea Society badge to add to your own blog or page right here. If you believe what we believe, then you are already a member!

We have been pleased as punch to see how our little “Society” has taken off since founding it less than a year ago. We are proud to be championing things that matter, and so excited to see others get excited about doing so, too. Our site traffic has actually tripled since this time last year (like kudzu!), which we think has a lot to do with this renewed focus.

On that note, we are also excited to announce we’re rolling out a new media kit today with some delightful new options! Lovely vendors, be sure to email Marissa or fill out this form to get your paws on this beauty ASAP. Just a little peek…

To conclude, here’s a glimpse at the Valentine’s Week goings-on in the Southern Weddings office. (Yes, we take a week to celebrate.)

Lara (did you see her new site??) gifted the gals with these teensy potted plants with adorable markers – love!

And one of our sweet interns, Jessica, brought us these darling boxes filled with (heart-shaped!!) biscuits, jam, and confetti!

Have a wonderful day, friends! We’ll be back with Marissa’s love letter soon.

Calling all Southern Bride Bloggers!

January 7, 2013 by Emily in Main,News | 12 comments

Hello, friends! We’re actually planning to post a little updated guide to the world of Southern Weddings this week because we know there are lots of y’all joining us for the first time (or, at least, joining us for the first time as officially engaged ladies – ha!). We’ll focus on all the nooks and crannies of SW then, but today, we just wanted to highlight one particular nook — our Southern Bride Bloggers!

We love promoting these ladies because they give you something that we generally can’t. Yep, we’ve got the resources to share stunning real weddings and offer expert advice (side note — etiquette posts are making a comeback in 2013 – WHOO!), but, aside from our Southern Bride of the Month series and the occasional SW gal getting married, we don’t share the step-by-step of an average bride’s walk to the altar. But these ladies do, in great Southern style, and we’d love for you to check them out! You can see the full list right here.

Of course, we’re always looking for new belles to add to the list! We look for brides currently planning a wedding in the Southeastern United States that blog at least once a week. If you fit the bill and are interested, just leave a comment here with your blog address and a little about yourself and we’ll take a look at your site. Make sure you include a valid email in your comment so we can send over your badge!

Happy planning to all!

We're getting married in SC in August (7 months, whew!) and couldn't be more excited about it. We live in Charlotte right now and will be making our way a little farther South after our nuptials. My blog has included everything so far from venue searching to bridesmaid gifts to suits for the boys and of course, my gorgeous gown. Take a peek and let me know what you think!

Kat, January 8, 2013 7:46 pm   reply I'm an avid Southern Wedding blog reader and fairly obsessed with all things wedding :) To be a bride to the love of my life is probably one of the most exciting things EVER! Matt and I have been together almost 6 years and we're getting married this July in Virginia. I can't WAIT to be his wife :) I started randomly blogging wedding updates on our wedding website last year. My 2013 resolution is to blog EVERY day leading up to the wedding. I've always loved READING wedding blogs and I think it's time I try a hand at being consistent with it! Emily's post about writing down everything that happened on her wedding day really struck me - SO much time is going into this and it's going to go by SO fast. Blogging is a great way to not only help other brides & wedding obsessed ladies, but to remind me in the months to come of all that's happening! I'd love to add the "southern bride blogger" badge to my "little details" wedding blog :)

Emily, January 13, 2013 3:20 pm   reply I'd love to join this! I read every post, but I don't live in the South. I'm from the Chicago area, but my tastes all revolve around southern charm and taste! Maybe if you open your parameters a bit I could join in and grab a badge. :) xoxo Emily emilyannestyle.com

Engage!12: You Sweeten Our Tea!

Howdy from the beautiful Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, where Emily (and Emily) and I have been engaging at the engage!12 Wedding Conference.

We’ve met so many new friends and had a wonderful time visiting with many of the remarkable vendors that have made our latest issue such a success. It has been a very inspiring week! I was happier as a pup with two tails to be invited to speak here and happy as a pup with three tails to share about how we do things ’round here at Southern Weddings.

Photo by Scott Clark and Chellise Michael with Elan Artists

Y’all know we do things a little differently. We’re small… and mighty… and Southern. We do all the layout, shipping, shoot creation, cleaning up after our messes and everything ourselves. We’re a tiny team with more passion than a hen has feathers. But, I didn’t talk about just us in my speech… I talked about YOU.

You are why we are here. You cheer us on and write us encouraging notes and share our magazine with dear friends and we sincerely wouldn’t be where we are without our very loyal readers. So, I wanted to just say a quick thank you. I wish I could jump through my screen to hug each of you, too. Thank you for believing in us and being our cheerleaders. Thank you, most of all though, for LOVING.

It’s because you love your fiancé’s and husbands and families and this magical place we call home so much that we are inspired every day to do what we do and we have so much goodness ahead! We love y’all! You sweeten our tea!
