V5 Print Submissions Call!

June 19, 2012 by Emily in Main,News | 0 comments

UPDATED: NEW DEADLINE AUGUST 15TH!

Hi friends! As y’all know, preparations for our next print edition — a.k.a. V5 — are well underway (we’ve got another shoot tomorrow!), and we want you to be a part of it. Photographers, brides, planners, designers and anyone else interested in submitting content for us to consider: please follow these easy directions and make sure to read our helpful FAQ page for editorial guidelines. We’re so excited about V5 and can’t wait to see what y’all have up your sleeves!

REAL WEDDINGS We are looking for the best of the best in real Southern weddings for print. Y’all know we love what you love – great photography, inspiring love stories and lovely details. To be considered for a Real Weddings feature in print, the wedding must have taken place in the southeastern United States. Photographers, please email 20-25 good web-quality .jpg attachments to our Creative Director, Emily Ayer, along with the following information: couple’s name, wedding date, wedding location, and any vendor information you have (names and websites). We only accept digital submissions. Brides, please ask your photographer to do the above. Please note we do have a strict exclusivity policy and cannot share work that has been featured on another blog or in another publication, and we would prefer that print submissions not be seen anywhere online, even the photographer’s blog or Facebook. Please title your email V5 REAL WEDDING.

EDITORIAL SHOOTS We loved the editorial shoots we featured in V4! Check them out in our gorgeous Editorial Galleries! If you have shot or created something wonderful that you think our readers would love, send preview images to Emily for review.

BOUQUETS In every issue we assemble a gallery of stunning bouquets. Send low-res previews to howdy at iloveswmag.com for review. Please attach the images individually to the email, or embed them in the email. Please do not send zip files. Please include the photographer’s name in the file name. We do allow bouquet shots to have been previously published online. Please title your email V5 BOUQUETS.

RINGS We love a little bling, and we know you do, too! In every issue, we highlight the most creative, Southern ring shots around. Check out a little taste from our last issue below. Please send low-res previews to howdy at iloveswmag.com for review. Please attach the images individually to the email, or embed them in the email. Please do not send zip files. Please include the photographer’s name in the file name. We do allow ring shots to have been previously published online. Send low-res previews to howdy at iloveswmag.com for review. Please title your email V5 RINGS.

EPIC IMAGES Y’all know we love great photography in print! Have an image you think has that Southern wow factor? We take a good number of single shots – details and portraits and Southern environmental – from all over the world to fill our pages and story elements. Send low-res previews to howdy at iloveswmag.com for review. Please attach the images individually to the email, or embed them in the email. Please do not send zip files. Please include the photographer’s name in the file name. We do allow epic images to have been previously published online. Please send a max of five images and title your email V5 EPIC IMAGES.

PRODUCT SUBMISSIONS Have a Fab Find, a product or paper good that you think our readers would adore? Please first send a digital submission – just a photo of the product plus a short description (why would our readers gobble it up!?) – to howdy at iloveswmag.com for review. If approved, we’ll request a physical sample. Please title your email V5 FAB FIND.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the high volume of submissions, we unfortunately cannot respond to all inquiries, though we will do our best! If your wedding or shoot is chosen, we will email you to request an interview from the couple and additional details. If you have not heard back from us on a Real Wedding submission within four weeks, we welcome you to submit your work to another publication. Other image submissions may take us longer to reply to as we have to fit them into stories, etc., as our publication date gets closer. Submissions deadline: AUGUST 15.

Have a question? First, read our submission guidelines. We take a lot of time to detail these out so you know exactly what to send. Next, read the Twitter series Lara wrote last year on how to get published for a few quick tips. Study our blog and print editions to know exactly what we’re looking for. Have other questions? Jumping out of your seat excited? Leave a comment here and help us spread the word! We can’t wait to see what you all cook up!

P.S. Want to get in on the V5 AD ACTION? You have till August 1 to confirm your space with Marissa!

Introducing: The Sweet Tea Society

May 17, 2012 by Emily in Main,News | 32 comments

Y’all, if there is just one thing we could have you take away from months (or years!) of reading this blog, it would be this: the marriage is always, always more important than the wedding. Yep, we LOVE pretty details. We do, we can’t help it! And we know you probably do, too!

What we’re trying to say is, no matter how much inspiration we provide for the gorgeous centerpiece, the exquisite wedding gown, or the picture-perfect favor, what we do to help you plan a meaningful wedding day that honors the right things and lays an unshakeable foundation for your marriage will always be infinitely more important. And that’s why we’ve created the Sweet Tea Society, to remind us all what’s truly important in weddings. This is what we believe:

We don’t do this perfectly all the time — no, ma’am! But we try harder every day to make this who we are and where our heart is, and we would be honored if you’d join us! Feel free to snag a badge if you’d like to become a member of the Sweet Tea Society, and keep an eye out for a few new blog features we’ve got in the works!

Won’t you join us?

P.S. Kudos to Brooke from Curious & Company, who designed and illustrated our badges and the top of our manifesto! Nicole did an amazing job laying the rest of it out!

Damaris Mia {Le Magnifique}, May 17, 2012 2:12 pm   reply I'm not from the South, however, I've always wanted to visit - I'd still like to place a badge on my blog. Where do you girls want it linked back to? :)

avatar
avatar

Emily, May 17, 2012 2:36 pm   reply Hi Damaris! We would love to have you, Southern or not! A link to www.iloveswmag.com or www.sweetteasociety.com would be wonderful!

2

Annie, May 17, 2012 2:39 pm   reply Oh my gosh, I absolutely love this idea! Beautiful centerpieces and dresses are great, but I hope that everyone can look back on their wedding and think of the wonderful emotions they felt because of the people and history involved. Hurray for Sweet Tea!

Diana, May 17, 2012 3:14 pm   reply This is such a beautiful idea! I am getting my badge now! Would love to be a guest blogger on any of the topics surrounding the wonderful society so please don't hesitate to ask!

Caroline, May 17, 2012 3:32 pm   reply this is cute but..picking a wedding date around the SEC schedule is going against the idea that the marriage is more important than the wedding. get married whenever you feel it is right, not so your husband can watch football. if the MARRIAGE is meant to be, then your husband shouldn't care if he can watch a game or not.

avatar
avatar

Emily, May 17, 2012 3:53 pm   reply Hi Caroline! Agreed! We went a little Southern tongue-in-cheek there. I think in context, the overall point still comes across strongly! :)

avatar

Emily, May 23, 2012 2:25 pm   reply Caroline: I would definitely say SEC (specifically, Kentucky Wildcat) basketball is more important to schedule around ;)

avatar

Peggy Sherwood, June 4, 2012 1:34 pm   reply Emily: This is soooo true for us that bleed blue.....all the weddings I attended during the SEC and NCAA Championship games had lounges with the KY Wildcats playing on the big screen. I kept thinking that maybe their first dances should have been to the UK fight song! Thankfully there was some bourbon or sweet tea being served up!

5

Leigh Pearce, May 17, 2012 4:04 pm   reply So in love with this!! I've already printed this out for our inspiration board in the office. Keep up the great work, SW ladies :)

avatar
6

reina, May 17, 2012 4:20 pm   reply I ADORE this. I keep saying this to clients - the marriage, the promise and your relationship is SO much more important than the wedding - the chargers you choose, the lighting you pick, or the peonies you can't have are INSIGNIFICANT in the light of a blessed marriage. I wan to be part of this NOW! :) xo

Desiree, May 17, 2012 5:32 pm   reply The reason why I so passionately love Southern Weddings, why I follow the blog, why I follow the editors, why I keep coming back for more...is because y'all are more! I've been married for almost 3 years now, I'm not planning my wedding anymore! Sure, I'm a wedding planner, but I have millions of resources to choose from. There are mountains of blogsites out there boasting the most beautiful details, the most gorgeous locations, etc. I think I can speak for a lot of your readers when I say, Southern Weddings is more than just a wedding blogsite. It's about all the details in your manifesto. I'm just glad y'all figured out what we've known all along. ;) great job!

8

Lisa, May 17, 2012 7:00 pm   reply This perspective and mentality is my favorite thing about Southern Weddings! Thrilled to grab a badge and join in! :)

avatar
9

beka, May 17, 2012 9:34 pm   reply Oh, ladies...how bad would it be if I went out and snatched up a husband just so I could join the Sweet Tea Society?! Maybe I'll stick to being an honorary single supporter for now :) But honestly, I agree with the other comments - this is why I LOVE SW! Thanks for keeping things real and in proper perspective. Your work is so appreciated!

10

Sarah Bush, May 18, 2012 1:14 am   reply THIS is why Southern Weddings is my favorite wedding magazine/wedding blog. OBSESSED with this!!! Thank you so much for for always going above and beyond the typical wedding blog, and reminding us what it's really all about. PS. Our wedding falls on the second weekend of the 2013 SEC football schedule. We will have a TV at the reception :)

11

Meagan, May 18, 2012 7:07 am   reply I picked my wedding date around Florida football! :)

avatar
12

Stephanie Creekmur, May 18, 2012 10:03 am   reply I am absolutely IN LOVE with this! So beautifully written! I am not a bride, nor am I interested in being one, but I am still a frequent reader of this blog. I love that you cater to weddings in the south but its so much more than that - you embrace the charming culture and your content is enjoyable even for those of us who aren't planning a wedding! Thank you! :)

avatar
avatar

Emily, May 18, 2012 10:45 am   reply Stephanie, your comment just made my heart happy! Thank you so much for that!!

13

Lauren, May 18, 2012 12:10 pm   reply This couldn't have been more perfectly timed for me! I'm single, but I have several friends who have invested lots of time and money into their weddings (and so have I), only to now be experiencing the rough patches that come with the first years of marriage. This is such an encouragement and a good reminder for when they confide in me. Thank you!

14

Layla Mayville {Simply Savannah Events}, May 23, 2012 4:43 pm   reply I'm not from the south but moved here and live in Savannah, GA. This is sooooo great!! I love sweet tea and everything that goes with southern hospitality! Newest member :)

Nikki, May 24, 2012 3:41 pm   reply I LOVE this! I totally had to pick my wedding date (and unfortunately wait until next spring) due to UT football season! But I could never be that girl I curse who puts a wedding on a game day. Love love love it!

Tanya Malott, May 25, 2012 2:49 pm   reply Glad to see you making a statement in the right direction. I think you are on the front edge of the next big trend. As a wedding photographer of 20+ years, I am a little sickened by the detail driven, fauxtography, styled shoot insanity created by wedding blogs and magazines. Enough already. Styled portraits and color palettes are NOT what weddings are all about. We have lost the people, their real emotions, and the meaning of it all under a pile of THINGS. I'm actually working on a book born out of this same frustration.....that we are all getting just a bit too carried away with the pretty pictures and forgetting the real meaning of marriage and connection.

Emily, May 28, 2012 10:14 pm   reply So glad to see our sentiments resonated with you, Tanya!

18

Ruth @ My Love Wedding Ring, May 29, 2012 5:14 pm   reply Such wise words!! Weddings are such a big thing it can be easy to lose perspective, but the long haul is definintely the more precious part of the marriage...

19

Kelly Cummings, June 1, 2012 12:53 pm   reply I love it, every little bit! Until I met my husband I never ever would've thought I'd pick our wedding date based on what team Alabama was playing that weekend and where (being a Tarheel born and bred and not caring for football at all before then), but we sure did! That weekend Alabama was playing Kentucky at Kentucky. Haha. I'm all about every bit of this, and I'd love to have a glass of sweet tea on a porch with all y'all! :)

We’re Bringing Southern Sweetness to Lover.ly!

April 25, 2012 by Emily in Main,News | 1 comment

My goodness, it’s an exciting day already, what with our new Maile Lani giveaway, but it’s about to get even better! The Southern Weddings gals are so excited to say that we’ve recently partnered with the visual search engine Lover.ly!

What does this mean for y’all? Only that you’ll now be able to find tons of your favorite Southern ideas in the most edited visual search engine online. Yahoo!!

For those who aren’t familiar with Lover.ly, here’s a brief primer:

– Lover.ly allows you to easily search, discover, and save your favorite wedding ideas. Just like Pinterest, you can then access these images from anywhere and on the go.
– Unlike Pinterest, there are only wedding images in the search engine, making it perfect for engaged ladies (and gents!) like yourselves to get to the good stuff quick. The images are also pulled only from top wedding blogs (like SW!), so you know you’re getting the good stuff, sans duds.
– A super awesome component of Lover.ly is that every image comes with vendor attribution, so you can actually see who created that amazing bouquet, or wear to buy those amazing shoes. Love this!!
– Our last favorite feature of Lover.ly? Because of the super intense tagging of the images that goes on behind the scenes, it’s possible to get very specific search results (for example, cake –> fondant –> multi-tier –> pink). Perfect for when you know exactly what you’re looking for!
– You can save images in Bundles (like “Stripes” or “Monograms” or “Bow Ties”), or if you’re not sure how you’d like to categorize an image, you can simply add it to your “Loved” Bundle.
– Best of all? You can keep as many Bundles as you’d like private! Perfect for keeping an element of suspense among your guests, or for brainstorming bridesmaid gift ideas!

Ready to get going? Just head over to Lover.ly and sign up for an account! Be sure to check out the SW account while you’re there – we’ll be bundling and sharing right alongside you!

V5 Model Call: Upstate New York

April 9, 2012 by Emily in Main,News | 8 comments

Hi ladies! How exciting is this??? Our very first reader model call for V5! We’ve had so much success casting readers in fabulous settings in the past that you just know we were itching to do it again.

As you may recall, we featured several sets of readers in V4. We hosted eight readers in Charleston:

Photos by Corbin Gurkin from Southern Weddings

We met three more lovely belles in Williamsburg…

Photos by Katie Stoops from Southern Weddings

And we finally met up with two more young ladies – and a polo-playing groom! – in Charleston.

Photos by A Bryan Photo from Southern Weddings

This time, we’re actually shooting outside the South, in upstate New York! Northerners and transplanted Southerners, this is your chance!

If you’re free for a Monday, May 21 adventure in Vernon, NY, we’d love for you to email a head shot (doesn’t have to be professional, just a good shot of your face!), a few recent candids, and your height to howdy at iloveswmag.com.

We are looking for a bride and groom pair, and several bridesmaids! In return, we promise gorgeous photos by a certain fabulous photographer, and, of course, a chance to be a part of Southern Weddings history!

We can’t wait to hear from you!

The Fourth “Ultimate Southern” Challenge: Sweets!

March 28, 2012 by Emily in Main,News | 0 comments

Though our last “Ultimate Southern” Challenge wrapped up just last week, we’re already eager to introduce the next round! Once you hear the topic, I don’t think you’ll blame us, either: it’s sweets! Yes, this time we’re looking for your most creative, lovely, adorable, and SOUTHERN ideas concerning the most delicious part of any wedding.

Not a baker? Not a problem! This challenge is more about presentation than taste (although if you have a fabulous recipe to share, by all means, please do!). We’re thinking Southern sweet wrapping, packaging, and prettifying – anything that helps show off your sweetest Southern ideas! To get your wheels turning, here are a few favorites from our archives:

Peach dessert photo by Steve Steinhardt via SW; mini pecan pie photo by Braedon Flynn via SW; mini key lime tart photo by Jodi Miller via SW; s’more pops photo by Kate Headley via SW; mini pecan pies photo by Caroline Joy via SW

Vendors, feel free to team up, though your submission doesn’t have to be anything elaborate — in fact, we want these ideas to be easily executable by brides everywhere!

A few details:

– Your submission can take any form (as long as it involves sweets!), but the most important piece is that it be SOUTHERN.

– Anyone can enter as an individual or a team — vendors, brides and grooms, and wedding or Southern enthusiasts alike. And you don’t have to be Southern to enter!

– To enter, please send 5-10 professional-quality photos at 600 pixels wide and a brief description of your submission to howdy at iloveswmag dot com. Subject line: “Ultimate Southern Challenge: Sweets.”

– Include the names and websites of all your team members, and a list of materials and links to sources used. Please include directions for any DIY projects you may have done.

All submissions must be received by 11:59pm on April 20, 2012. Submissions received after the 20th will not be eligible.

– Our favorite submissions will be posted throughout the week of April 23, and the winner, who gets ultimate Southern bragging rights, will be announced the following week.

– Submissions cannot be posted or tweeted until published on Southern Weddings.

We can’t WAIT to see what y’all come up with! Questions? Leave them below, and we’ll do our best to answer them!

P.S. Want to check out the winners of our last three Challenges? Go here, here and here!
