Virginia Engagement Session from Vicki Grafton

Like many of y’all, my husband and I promised ourselves to each other “in sickness and in health” at our wedding. Thankfully, we haven’t had much cause to live up to the first part, but I’m always moved by those couples who have. Especially ones like Jewel and Ben, who’ve weathered some pretty scary circumstances even before they officially wed. I think you’ll enjoy their story — a great reminder that the real beauty of a wedding is a lifelong partner who will stick with you through thick and thin.

Thank you to Vicki Grafton for the breath-of-fresh-air images!

For our entire relationship, Ben and I have disagreed on the story of us: how, when, and where we met will go down as one of life’s great unsolved mysteries. We can both agree, however, that Ben’s sister Sydney is responsible for setting us up. About two to three months before I graduated high school, I had been complaining to Sydney about how desperate I was for a prom date when she suggested that I ask Ben to my prom. He seemed nice enough, so I asked him, and he said yes. Fast forward about seven years later, and Ben was down on one knee asking me to be his wife.

About six months after the proposal, I had a routine appointment with my nephrologist (kidney doctor). I was diagnosed with Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (a type of chronic kidney disease) when I was 16 years old, so I’d been seeing my kidney doctors every few months for the past 10 years. A few weeks before Thanksgiving in 2012, my kidney doctor advised me to go on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. Ben and I thought we’d at least be able to make it through the wedding and maybe a few years of marriage before I needed a transplant. Wedding or not, my kidneys had plans of their own. From December 2012 to May 2013, my kidney function fell from 15 percent to 5 percent.

Patients on the organ transplant list wait an average of five years before receiving a kidney from a deceased donor, and roughly 80 percent of people waiting for an organ transplant are waiting for a kidney. This past April, it was beginning to look more and more like I wasn’t going to get a new kidney in time for the wedding. I started preparing for dialysis, but on April 17, the transplant center notified me that my dad had been approved to donate his kidney to me! My whole family and Ben were relieved, excited, nervous, anxious, and hopeful that the surgery would be a success and that I’d finally be healthy.

On May 3, my dad donated his kidney to me, and the doctors said it worked right away! Since then, I’ve been feeling great, I’m no longer addicted to coffee, and Ben and I are so happy that I can enjoy the wedding as a healthy bride! And my dad is doing just fine, as well. Dad saved the [wedding] day!

Jewel and Ben are getting married this weekend, and we couldn’t be more thrilled for them! Be sure to leave them some love in the comments! Also, how perfect is this post for Father’s Day weekend??

P.S. Did you know we feature an engagement session every Friday on our Facebook page? Check it out!

The Notebook Engagement Session by Justin DeMutiis

Here’s an alarming fact for you: The Notebook came out over eight years ago. Do you feel as old as I do now? I actually watched it recently (don’t laugh — you know you love it, too), and somehow, it still seems as romantic and charming as ever.

Of course, ladies like us are predisposed to swoon over old plantations dripping in Spanish moss, rowboat scenes in the bayou, and epic love stories. Count Courtney among our number, too. She and her fiance Paul borrowed a little inspiration from the big screen for their photography debut, and I couldn’t be more in love with their subtle nods to Lowcountry life!

Big thanks to Justin DeMutiis for sending this romantic engagement session our way!

Outfit change! As a sweets fiend, I love this next look, complete with Gigi’s Cupcakes.

I really admire how light-handed they were with the vintage touches, and of course, Justin’s clean, light-filled (gorgeous!) images help to keep everything firmly in the present, too.

If you’re a bird, I’m a bird!

Bridesmaid Beach Shoot by Ben Sasso

Happy Friday, belles! I can’t think of a better way to end this (kind of gray and cloudy) week than with this bright and sunshine-y session from Ben Sasso! Nichole and her bridesmaids met up with Ben the day before her wedding for what he calls “outrageous fun.” A wedding is of course about celebrating the love between two people, but it’s also a celebration of the rich relationships you two have cultivated throughout your lives. What an amazing way to celebrate that, create a treasured keepsake, and burn off some pre-wedding jitters all at the same time!

I hope y’all find some sun this weekend!

Gator Engagement Session by Anna Kirby Photography

Emily says I have to be nice to the Gators when I write this post, but y’all don’t know how hard that is! (Just kidding… but not!) My hubs actually thinks I should have declined to write this post (yes, we are THAT big of Bama fans!). I, on the other hand, am happy to write it — Florida is at least in the SEC! Clearly college football love (and allegiances!) run deep in the South!

Also, today’s handsome groom-to-be is a professional football player, so how could I turn down writing a post about a fellow pro athlete’s wife? After all, it’s not an easy life, and we have to stick together!

Oh, and can I please just talk about how stinkin’ adorable these two are?! When their photographer, Anna Kirby, suggested Ali and Eric take their engagement photos at The Swamp (Ben Hill Griffin Stadium) they literally jumped at the idea! Ali says their engagement pictures “reflect our shared love of our family traditions, our university, and football.” Putting aside our allegiances, this lovely bride is a girl after my own heart! (AND, I want her cowboy boots!)

What’s your favorite college football team? Would you take or did you do your e-session (or your whole wedding) at your alma mater? How will you be incorporating your team into your big day?

P.S. Roll Tide, y’all! This is just one of the ways we incorporated college football into our wedding day!

P.S.S. Love e-sessions? Be sure to tune into our Facebook every Friday where we feature exclusive engagement sessions each week!

Janna, January 27, 2012 10:28 pm   reply Go Gators! What fun engagement photos!! Congrats yall! My husband and I added our own Gator traditions in our wedding last March. B's cake was a Gator and I of course had my orange and blue garter. We also added a phrase to the wedding day. Our pastor included it in the ceremony and we had it on our favors. "In all kinds of weather"- any Gator fan knows those words and sings them proudly between the 3rd and 4th quarter of games and my husband and I loved how it could also stand for us sticking together 'in all kinds of weather' during our marriage. :)

Lindsay, January 28, 2012 12:45 am   reply This is awesome! Such a cute e-session. Makes me long for the fall! We will definitely be including Gator gear into the wedding...Gator garter and orange and blue shakers for the send off. Might even have to make tags for the handles that include the "in all kinds of weather" phrase! Thanks for the great idea Janna! Go Gators!
